I have been working in GIS for more than 17 years. I caught the bug in graduate school, where a brief few weeks in a plenary studio with Dana Tomlin convinced me that this was some interesting stuff about which I wanted to learn a lot more. Learning GIS from Dana Tomlin was quite a privilege. He has a unique teaching style that uses a combination of rich metaphor and creative descriptions of physical scenarios in order to describe complex concepts. It was a formative experience for me, and caused a significant shift in my career toward geospatial analysis.Dana built his academic reputation around the development of Map Algebra, a conceptual framework for processing geographic data that he originally articulated in his doctoral thesis. This work, which he referred to as "Cartographic Modeling" (Map Algebra has since become a more popular moniker) was outlined in a book released in 1990.The book itself was important, but the influence of Dana's work was enhanced by his decision to openly share the source code that demonstrated the concepts as well as a number of elegant algorithms for implementing the computation in efficient ways. As a consequence, Map Algebra concepts and algorithms became part of every commercial and open source GIS platform that supported raster processing. When I first took a class with Dana in 1995, the book was already becoming tough to find, and there are still used copies of the Prentice Hall edition floating around, but it's been out of print for several years. So I was thrilled when I learned that Dana was going to collaborate with Esri Press to re-publish a revised version of the book. This book is the fruits of that collaboration, and I couldn't wait to crack it open. This is not just a republication - it's a significant update on the original book. Unlike many contemporary GIS books, Dana and the editors elected to eschew color illustrations in favor of the original gray-scale approach. However, every illustration and map has been redrawn, and they a wonderful compliment to the text. I think the decision to stick with gray-scale illustrations was a smart one, though I am somewhat less sanguine about the gray-scale maps; many are quite successful, but some of have only a narrow range of b/w values and the resulting lack of contrast causes them to look muddy to my eye.Dana has also retained the original data sets around the "Brown's Pond" site located near his home in western Massachusetts. By using the same site to illustrate the concepts, the chapters have a great deal of continuity, enabling the reader to focus on the material, rather than interpreting the data. The book also retains its focus on teaching and learning; each chapter ends with a series of questions to help the learner apply the material. The book ends with an appendix that describes some of the nuances of the cartographic modeling language. At this point, it is important to note that while Esri Press is publishing the book, it is not tied to Esri's ArcGIS software in any way. While every raster processing software has adopted Dana's overall modeling framework, the terminology has rarely remained intact. Esri's implementations have not been an exception, and the current set of tools in the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension have their own unique nomenclature and categorization system. But Esri has resisted the urge to turn this into a self-serving book that supports their own ArcGIS software platform. Rather, similar to some of the other Esri Press books that focus on foundational concepts in GIS (Semiology of Graphics and The Look of Maps come to mind), the book is aimed at all learners of GIS. Esri deserves a great deal of credit for demonstrating a generosity of spirit that compliment's Tomlin's own commitment to openly sharing his work.So regardless of the GIS platform you use, if you want to learn about spatial modeling, this book is a great place to start.

I had to read this book for a graduate class and struggled to get through it each week. The writing was extremely technical (as to be expected I suppose) and was very dry. I understand it is a very technical topic, but I have read very technical books on GIS that are not this dry. I needed to take breaks after a few paragraphs. The information was beneficial to any GIS professional, but I just feel as though the material could have been presented in a better fashion. More real world examples would have helped to drive home the information this book presented.

This is an excellent book to have in your GIS library, but I would not recommend it as an introduction to GIS.The first chapter is like a data dictionary of GIS term. Each one is defined, along with discussion of the ramifications of various implemations. It really opened my eyes to some considerations I had not thought of.The rest continues in a manner that continues to cover the ramifications of various choices.A great reference, but to dry and slow for a first GIS book.

Everything I expected.

This book is amazing and is a must have for any serious drummer and educator!!

Complete and clean explanations. Great Book!!

Love this books approaxh. Gives you an idea to base off of and then leaves it up to you to find your own sound.

The only reason I give it less than 5 stars is because I detest instructional books that leave open space for you to "write your own" exercises. The book would be half as long without those pages... They are numerous. The ideas discussed within are valuable, and the online content is more than a couple hours long, so it's a solid instructional.

Excellenet material! Interesting perspective for being creative! Every drummer should have this book! Thanks Mark!

Fantastic content ... but very disgusted with DVD not working on my modern TV /audio screen.OK .. Laptop only. BAD ... for the price paid.

this book just amazing.. and shippin was soooooo fast and safe! cya

Great book.

I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter. She loves the Beatles music, and knows only what I choose to tell her about their personal lives. She does not need to be told about the war in Vietnam, protesters, or the death of Martin Luther King. She does not need to be told of the Beatles drug use. She does not need to know that John Lennon was murdered. I will teach her of these things when the time is right for it. I had hoped that this book wasabout how four simple young men from Liverpool became one of the greatest musical acts of our age. An inspiration for my young musician daughter. Sorry to say it falls short of that goal. Not recommended for kids!

I wish this series had been around when I was a kid! So far, I have purchased Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss, George Lucas, The Beatles and Walt Disney for my son. These books are a great way for me to introduce the people who have always inspired me, to my own children. I believe that reading about different creative talents throughout history is not only a great way for kids to learn but also a great way to inspire them. We always have great conversations when we discuss the people from these books because we teach each other new things.

This series is great to introduce kids to historic and culturally significant personages. Perfect especially for a Beatles-obsessed third grader! It actually made him interested in reading!

Simple, informative and to the point.

My son loves the Beatles and loved learning more about them. I read aloud to him in first grade bc it was a little lengthy and a bit hard for him. But second graders and up could handle this book easily.

As usual these books are great. My kids learn a lot reading those while me and I know other parents read them too. In this particular case, I learnt a lot about The Beatles.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

Brother was happy with the book. He had planned on buying it; but hadn't yet, so it was a nice surprise for him.

Nice book for this subject from the experts in the field.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone dealing with concepts of verification and validation. This was an important part of my thesis work, and this reference was invaluable in providing a much-needed comprehensive overview of the verification and validation literature. Both Oberkampf and Roy have done much pioneering in the field of V&V, so the reader is in good/capable hands. The book covers some fundamental V&V concepts, then moves into code verification and software quality assurance (Part II) and solution verification (Part III). It then covers model validation (Part IV), and covers issues in implementation, planning, and management and use of V&V in these activities (Part V). Part V is perhaps the most unique part of the book, but the coverage in all parts of the book is thorough. This, along with Roache's "Verification and Validation in Computational Science and Engineering" (1998), proved to be an excellent survey of the field. (Much less helpful was the Salari and Knupp's "Verification of Computer Codes" (2002)). Coleman's "Experimentation, Validation, and Uncertainty Analysis for Engineers" (2009) has a more heavily experimental flavor, but is another great resource in this field.

The Great British Recording Studios, by Howard Massey

Review

"One of the most important books ever written about recording ... a treasure trove of information about the British studio scene during its most explosive period of growth." --Malcolm Atkin, Chair, Association of Professional Recording Services''The Great British Recording Studios is a sweeping account of the golden age of UK recording. In it, author Howard Massey chronicles the cultural forces and technological innovations that shaped the sound of landmark records by The Beatles, The Who, the Rolling Stones, and many others. His profiles of iconic studios from Abbey Road to AIR to Olympic leave no stone unturned detailing everything from construction history to equipment lists to discographies to sessions anecdotes, including vintage marketing materials and many never-before-seen photos.'' --Electronic Musician Magazine''Let's not mince words. As a touring musician-producer-engineer-author-music journalist, Howard Massey is uniquely qualified to do what he has accomplished in writing The Great British Recording Studios. He has documented the definitive history of the British recording studios that brought the art of sound recording to a level that spurred, and was spurred by, a breathtaking outpouring of musical creativity in the 1960s and '70s—led, of course, by The Beatles and their insatiable curiosity regarding sound and sonic effects....Too much praise cannot greet The Great British Recording Studios. From the Inside Flap

From the time that Thomas Alva Edison invented the phonograph, music has become an integral part of everyday life. The so-called "British Invasion" of the 1960s and 1970s spearheaded what was inarguably one of the most important and creative periods in the development of recorded music. The Great British Recording Studios tells the story of the iconic English recording studios of that era--places such as Abbey Road, Olympic, Trident, AIR, Advision, Island, and Apple--and provides a sweeping panorama of the people, places, groundbreaking techniques, and innovative artists and technicians who shaped the course of modern recording. Meticulously researched and richly detailed, The Great British Recording Studios provides comprehensive information about the history, construction techniques, acoustic treatments, room dimensions, and equipment used by the key English studios during those heady times, supplemented with many never before published photographs and more than a hundred entertaining "Stories from the Studio" that take the reader behind the scenes of the making of some of the world's best-loved records. The Great British Recording Studios is endorsed by and was written with the cooperation of the UK-based Association of Professional Recording Services, headed by Sir George Martin.  Â

I was interested in learning about various key recording studios, the gear they had, the room layouts and dimensions and sound treatments, the people who ran the sessions and their techniques. The two main books that came up were this book (TGBRS) by Howard Massey, dealing with British studios, and "Temples of Sound" (TOS) by Jim Cogan and William Clark, which is about American studios. TOS was published in 2003 while TGBRS was published in 2015. Now that I've read them both, I can make some comments. Both books are easy and enjoyable to read. My only gripe with both books is that I wish the lists of important recordings made at each studio was significantly longer. The initial idea for TOS was a photo book of great musicians in the recording studio creating their masterpieces. There are a lot of photos and they capture the feeling of being there. Each chapter is 8-15 pages dedicated to one studio: Capitol, United Western Recorders, Sunset Sound, RCA Studio B, Stax, Sun Studios, J&M, Chess, Universal, Motown, Sigma, Atlantic, Columbia, Van Gelder, Criteria. You get a brief history focusing on the biggest stars, producers, engineers. Little focus is on the gear, room and treatments, and techniques used to record. It's more about the people and the times, and not how the classic recordings were made (from a technical or engineer pov). A nice feature is a list of 12 "essential" songs that were recorded in each studio. This book has become very hard to find and very expensive (maybe it's out of print?). I'm glad I did not pay more than $20 for it (I found a mint condition ex-library book copy via Amazon.ca third-party vendor), as I probably could have found all its information by searching the internet.TGBRS is a far more thorough book and more about the building, rooms, gear, engineers and their techniques than it is about the famous artists. This information is not so easily found on the internet, and it's collected here very nicely. The studios covered in this book are: Abbey Road (EMI), Decca, Pye, Philips, IBC, LAnsdowne, Advision, CTS / The Music Centre, Holloway Road, Olympic, trident, AIR, LEvy's / CBS / Whitfield Street, Star Sound / Audio International, De Lane Lea / Kingsway, Ryemuse / Mayfair, Marquee, Sound Techniques, Wessex, Morgan, Chappell, Chalk Farm, Apple, Island / Basing Street, Pathway, The Manor, Scorpio Sound, Chipping Norton, Ramport, Sarm, Sawmills, Roundhouse, RAK, Utopia, Good Earth, Matrix, Townhouse, Ridge Farm, Odyssey. Also covered are these mobile studios: Rolling Stones, Pye, Ronnie Lane, Manor, Island, RAK, Maison Rouge. The mobiles section is very interesting and a nice addition. It would have been nice to read about American equivalents, had it been included in TOS.In TGBRS, the information for each facility follows the same sequence, which is a nice organizational touch: history of the building and studio, key personal, physical facilities, acoustic treatments, room dimensions, echo chambers, key equipment, mixing consoles, monitors, tape machines, main microphones, outboard signal processors, key technical innovations, selected discography. There's obviously more information and pages dedicated to the larger studios but the book seems to have balanced it out well.TGBRC gives you a lot more information than TOS. The 14-page Introduction is an excellent summary of the origins and history of British recording studios, as well as an explanation of the difference between the British and American recordings. The history and explanations of all the equipment and technical gear (microphones, monitors, tape machines, outboard signal processors, reverb plates, mixing consoles, etc.) is given, and it's excellent. Lots of inside stories about key recordings and techniques. At the end of the book is a glossary of technical terms.Oddly enough, TGBRS is written by an American, Howard Massey, who has already published two other excellent books called Behind the Glass, Volumes 1 & 2, full of interviews with important recording engineers. All these books are highly recommended for music history buffs and musicians with home studios.

Hands down the best book on the subject! Perhaps the only book of its kind.Massey said in an interview that he spent 10 years researching this book and it shows. The book is very detailed and very well written. Massey has a template to describing the history of each of the major recording studios in Britain of the day to a given studio's engineers, associated staff, facility dimensions, acoustic treatments, consoles, monitors, microphones, signal processing equipment, tape machines, developed innovations interspersed with lite hearted stories by studio staff that are rather comical.Massey has produced an outstanding documentation of the mechanism behind the creation of the English Pop music of 60s, 70s, and 80s that has become so integral to our every lives. This book should be Ken Burns next series. It's that good!If your are a musician, recording enthusiast, or audio gearhead, this book is for you. You won't be disappointed.

"Suddenly, good sounds were being made in good studios. Not just from the big boys like EMI and Decca, but also in little independent studios that gave free rein to their clients." George Martin."A recording studio is an immediate imposition as compared to sitting around a fire strumming." Robert Plant.I know this book has been around a few years and has been reviewed, but I was looking up some information I needed and was again struck on how great this book is, so I couldn't help but add my comments about this fine book. Not only laid out nicely, this book covers the major and minor studios, that if you read the back of album covers or CD inserts, you''ll recognize quite a few of the studios in this book. Filled with both general and more technical information (which you can skip unless you're an audio engineer and/or even more of a recording information nerd than I am) there's also a lot of great photos that give you an idea of what these studios were like. Plus at the end of each essay there's a list of important artists/recordings that were done at that particular studio. This book's information runs the gamut from general information that's easy to understand to more esoteric stuff (different mixing consoles, monitors, signal processors, etc.) that mean relatively little to someone like me, or things like a de-emphasis curve chart (as an example) which, while important aren't the real reason I like this book. Having for years read the names of studios like EMI, Decca, Phillips, Trident, AIR, and other well known studio names, along with other smaller studios like De Lane Lea, Morgan, Chalk Farm, Island, The Manor, RAK, Roundhouse, and others, it's great to be able to see these studios in photos (and a number of artists in the studios you'll recognize) and read about these places of seemingly audio magic. Plus the various mobile studios are included, like The Rolling Stones Mobile, Pye Mobile, Ronnie Lane Mobile, and several others which are also important in the history of British recording. There's a glossary and index included, both valuable to have for quicker reference. Also throughout the book are interesting and informative sections called "Stories From The Studio" which add both more information to the general body of information and are pretty interesting to read on their own. The many b& w photos (and some color) are very important for a better understanding and feel of each studio. If you're the type of person (like me) who likes to know how recordings are made (and you like other books about how albums are manufactured for example) this book will add a lot of interesting information about all the places where so much great music has been recorded. These studios represented the hey-day of British recording and this book does justice to that era. Worth adding to your library.

Shirrel Rhoades absolutely knows his stuff. And why not? He was one of the top executives at Marvel for years and helped bring them through some of their toughest times and lived through numerous takeovers. This book literally covers every aspect of American comic book history. After a very brief chapter on very early comic books, he begins with 1933's "Funnies on Parade" and gives us an in-depth journey from that point on with every "age" of the comics. From the Platinum Age to the Modern Age, you'll find some very interesting reading in here. It's obvious that Rhoades takes his job as a historian seriously, giving us interviews and quotes from creators of some of the beloved older characters, and a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the more modern ones were formed. Graphic novels are mentioned as well. There's also a section on selling your comic collection, profiles on industry insiders, a comic book industry timeline, and just for fun there are some quizzes in there as well.Rhoades talks about the individual publishers as well, and what made them succeed or ultimately fail. He has friends in DC as well as his connections to Marvel, so the Big Two are adequately exposed. Surprisingly, we also learn alot about Image Comics, EC Comics, and others. If you have any interest in comic books, you'll find this a straightforward, easy-to-read history. There's enough in here to keep your interest throughout. While I can't say it's the most comprehensive I've ever read, it's definitely worth the time. Highly recommended.

#12,563 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I will start off by saying that Laura Thalassa started with a great idea, and slowly turned it into just another cliché. The Vanishing Girl is a story about a girl named Ember who has the ability to teleport. So far so good, because teleporting is of the least exploited paranormal talents. Then, Ember gets shipped off to a facility full of other teleporters who are used by the government as a weapon. So far the story is still interesting, because there is much mystery surrounding this government project that all the teleporters are part of. Then, Ember begins to fall in love with Caden, and this, in my opinion, is when the story begins to go downhill. Now, I love a good romance as much as the next girl, but one that makes sense! Ember is trying to escape and she knows that the government has sinister secrets she wishes to uncover, yet she decides to start a passionate relationship with the very person that captures her? I mean, Caden is described as being very sexy and he is charming and such, but one would think escape and finding out the truth would be more important for our heroine. Ember seems to forget all about her family, friends and taking back control of her life as soon as Caden utters a few provocative words. Also, I feel like their relationship evolves much too quickly from hostile to can't-be without-you-for-a-second. Ember, at the beginning, keeps telling herself she won't let what she feels towards Caden ruin her plans, but this is essentially what happens. It makes Ember seem weak, desperate and not very heroic. Overall, this sounds like I'm against romance, but truly, I am not. It's just that the book would have been better without such a relationship; especially because after they officially acknowledge their passionate love for each other, most of the scenes that follow are about sex and/or making out. I found it repetitive how the author uses up most of the book to describe scenes of sex, kissing and/or other similar actions. It is until the end of the book that we finally see some real action, and then the book ends, when the reader is still hungry for more. I do believe I will be looking for the sequel, mostly because I am interested in the main storyline; I just hope the author focuses more on the desperate situation Ember is in, rather than the lust and sexual desire she feels towards Caden 24/7.

3.5 StarsThis book is great but also so frustrating and infuriating. I loved it but hated some of it at the same time. The Vanishing Girl is book one in the series by the same name. It is about 18 year old Ember Pierce who learns she is the result of a government experiment and is kidnapped and forced to attend training and become a spy. She, along with the other captive teenagers, can teleport for 10 minutes each night and during those minutes she is forced to do government missions. Ember meets her pair and her mission partner, Caden Hawthorne. They quickly fall in love. This book was exciting and fun but there was one thing that repeatedly made me so angry. Ember did not want to be there, she was held against her will, she wasn't happy; yet the night she arrives at the facility she immediately falls into line. They ask her if she would like a tour, she says "Sure". The next morning she wakes up and goes to her classes as she is instructed. She follows the directions of the teachers. This whole time, I am screaming at the book. If someone forced me somewhere against my will and told me this is my new life and here is my class schedule, I am quite certain that the first words out of my mouth would be a slew of expletives and I would be throwing out a whole bag of nopes. I would turn down the tour. I would not leave my room to go to classes. I would argue, fight, question, demand answers, etc. I would throw a temper tantrum and not be pleasant. Sure, they would probably force me or threaten me or something, but I would at least begin my time there with stubborn refusal of orders. Once I got it out of my system and saw that I had no other options, I might go with the flow but certainly not before that. I needed to see something, anything, from Ember that was like a normal teenage or any age human reaction to this sudden change. I needed her to say no and demand answers at least a bit in the beginning just so that it could at least seem like a natural progression into her acceptance of the situation. That is the reason that I am not giving this book 4.5 - 5 stars.Other than that, I really enjoyed everything else about this book. I liked the main characters a lot. I thought the program and the missions made for an interesting story. I liked the mystery and the angst. I thought it was a lot of fun to read. I didn't want to put the book down. This book does end with a cliffhanger so you might want to keep that in mind if you don't like cliffhangers. I am excited to find out what happens next. Book 2, The Decaying Empire, is already out so that's good at least. The only concern I have is that I just found out that book 2 also ends in a cliffhanger and book 3 is not yet out. This author takes an extremely long time to write her books so I am worried about how long it will take for us to get the third and final book. It has been almost 3 years and the author says she is still writing it so who knows...Audible: I added the whispersync audible narration to this kindle book. The narrator was easy to listen to. Her voices weren't all that great but it was still an enjoyable narration. It didn't distract from the story.
