Provided interesting into the lives of good people who survived with dignity and honor a terrible time in China's history. Including mystery and romance this is a very good read. I look forward to the next book in the series.

In China where couples were allowed only 1 child and the preference is a boy, the female babies are often left in the trash or abandoned on the street. Benfu and Calli Lilly take in babies that he finds at the dump or on his travels to and from his scavenger sites. They had their own birth daughter taken from them by his mother-in-law and the daughters he acquires are his prize possessions. He takes them with all their problems and disabilities and loves them unconditionally. They find better times when his daughter, Linnea, opens her own T-shirt shop. She is determined to find out what happened to the biological daughter that was taken from her parents. It's a well written story that shows unselfish love for the innocent is the best reward for yourself. I have read the second book in this series, Tangles Vines, and it is just as good. There are two more books in the series that I am excited to get started reading.

I appreciate living through a book a new experience I would not otherwise know. This book is beautifully written by a talented author. It made me smile, worry, and rejoice with the characters. I was moved to tears, sometimes with joy and sometimes with sorrow. I prefer good literature, and it is a pet peeve of mine to be distracted from content by poor writing. I became completely immersed in this book with none of those distractions and did not want to come up for air until the last page! I will definitely be reading more of this author and am glad to see she has written more set in this Chinese culture!

This story takes place in China, starting with Mao's Cultural Revolution. There are always abuses when a totalitarian government tries to force the people of a land to do things in a totally new way. Even though the story starts this way, it quickly jumps to present day China and the results of those childhood experiences on one particular family. The protagonist is a man who would not give up his intellectual parents to the proletariat 'remodeling' of society, and his parents pay him back by crushing him and his wife in a cruel and totally brutal manner that does not get revealed until most of the story is over.Benfu could have had a life of ease but he chose independence instead. As a result of what happened to him and his wife, he becomes the savior of abandoned children; specifically girls, who are not valued in China at all, even by other women. Over the years he and his wife bring up these girls as if they were their own, and they have a life filled with love, if nothing else. The story is sweet, but quite predictable; especially the ending. Still, you get a glimpse of the real China, and that is interesting in and of itself.

Although a quick read you get to know the characters fairly well. At the least, you wanted to know them better, so I'm glad there is a series for those who need to know what happens in the future. I would think this book has a feminine appeal. I can't imagine many men would find its simplicity enough. In a world filled with horrors on the nightly news, it's nice to think the beautiful true stories are out there too. Sometimes right within our own neighborhood. Glad I read it.

This is an inspiring story of a Chinese man who turns an event in his life that would destroy most into a lifetime of devotion to saving others. Benfu is being held captive by the Red Guard during Mao Zedong's reign of terror in China. A young commune member, a boy really, takes a chance on his own life becoming a living nightmare by sneaking out and setting Benfu free.Benfu runs for his life and ends up in Wuxi, where he is protected by a young woman. He marries Calla Lily and they live a life hand-to-mouth. He scavenges through garbage to find items like paper or string, anything he can sell. But, that's not the only thing Benfu scavenges for. He and Calli dedicate themselves to raising daughters who have been abandoned by their mothers, some as babies and some as children (the oldest being 5 years when found). All the daughters - more than a dozen thus far - are named after flowers, like their mother. As Benfu ages, life becomes more and more difficult. He develops a life-threatening illness and it looks to him as though all is lost. But, he arrives home from a lengthy stay in the hospital to find the town has rallied and his once barren courtyard is a beautiful garden. The Wuxi Town Government has sent an official to honor him for all he has done for those lost little girls. All his children, including the adults who are married with children of their own, are gathered around to welcome him. While others around Benfu saw his life and taking in those abandoned girls as a hardship, he and Calli never did. The love in this household was tangible throughout the book. One child is mute and one child is paralyzed. All of them know their stories of how they were found, with as much as Benfu and Calli are able to tell them about their past (which isn't much under the circumstances). But, all are joyful and happy because they know they are loved "to the moon and back".This story is masterfully told and I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

A warm and richly woven tale. I loved it and even shed a few tears at the end. I was totally absorbed in the book and could not put it down.

A very thorough compendium. Although missing a few herbs which I have tried to find, it has darn near everything. I use it mostly to look up new herbs I am curious about, which gives me useful introductory information to investigate further. I like the cross reference index of common names - for when I don't yet know the Latin. Nice pictures for most herbs, although not all entries have photos. Although already excellent - I would like to see this book continue to be expanded with even more herbs and photos.

I previously had borrowed this book from my local library and thought it was a good reference. It has a ton of info as far as use goes (medicinal, culinary, etc.) and warns of poisonous plants. I kept an eye out for it since it's very hard to find.

This is such a great reference tool. I wanted to start out in herbology with good standard books and this was just what I needed. The only thing it lacks is the dosage for medicinal, which is why I bought it but I didn't expect any book to have everything or to just have one book of this so I'm very happy with it.

I am using this book as a study guide through one of my college courses on Botany. This book is loaded with so much clear cut information you couldn't ask for anything more! The detailed pictures that are shown throughout the book are absolutely beautiful. To have the visual along with the description is the best way to go. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in herbology or just has a curiousity in herbs! Planting your own garden and knowing what you are growing is very helpful.

This book is a valuable reference with small and very readable sections on the history, garden design and general uses of herbs. BUT the value lies in the extensive catalogue. Over 150 pages of identifying photographs and that is before you get to near on 200 pages of the herbal dictionary. Well cross referenced, and full of relevent information on each herb. No fluff or filler words, this book is all excellent information. I would value this book as the most read herb book in my library. This review relates to the first edition.

I absolutely love this book. Hard to find and has loads of information. Great for me since i plan on starting an herb garden.

This book is quite thorough about explaining the uses and characteristics of each plant. Lots of pictures are included. There's a section at the beginning that shows you how to start your own garden, and also one that gives a history of some well-known uses of various plants.

You wouldn't. This book is by far the best herb reference book on the market today. Everything you want to know about growing and using herbs is in this book. Well worth the money spent. You'll use this book forever.

This is a phenomenal book about Living with Rheumatoid Arthritis. A very appropriate title. The book explains everything from diagnosis to how to live as well and full a life as you want to have. You can have the best Rheumatologist doctor on your case, as I do, but to have this very well written book as your primer to this disease will help you to help yourself in every aspect of your life. The book explains medications, exercises for the body and mind, nutrition, ways to eat to fight inflammation, supplement guides as well as surgical procedures.

I borrowed this book from my local library, read it all the way through, and just purchased a Kindle copy for my personal library.I don't have a diagnosis for my joint pain yet, but Rheumatoid Arthritis is a possibility. I've done quite a bit of reading on the internet, and I've met with a highly regarded rheumatologist at a Boston hospital. I would say that I came to this book already well-versed in the current understanding of RA and its treatments.I'm not sure that I learned very many totally new facts about RA, but I did find the presentation of information in this book to be excellent, and the comprehensiveness (in terms of details) really wonderful. I decided that purchase of the book was justified just by the chapters on exercise (including specifics) and medications/treatments.The exercise chapter covers what could be appropriate exercises for three broad categories of RA status: Very Inflamed Joints, Moderately Inflamed Joints and Controlled Joints. There's one chapter on overall activity and health, and another full of specific exercises, such as range of motion exercises (with illustrations.) This was far more helpful to me than advice to "avoid damaging exercises" that I've heard elsewhere! I've been doing strength training with weights for several years, and I wanted very clear, specific advice on what a good exercise program for a person diagnosed with RA might be if that's the diagnosis I end up with. I plan to show this chapter to my rheumatologist and confirm whether his advice matches the general advice Dr. Shlotzhauer offers in the book.Similarly, I've read descriptions of the various DMARDS and biologics on lots of websites, but here they are tidily packaged in one place, and the author has included a table of side effects (with their frequency of incidence) for each one. I could've printed all of this out from the internet, but this is a nice, and seemingly very complete, set of information for me to bring to my doctor visits.About the only thing missing from this book that I personally find really vital to my own choices in treatment options is information about costs. Yes, our system tends to rely upon insurance companies to pay for imaging and treatments (for those of us lucky enough to have good, comprehensive insurance), but that also means sometimes the insurance company's idea of the best first treatment for me might be based upon cost as opposed to outcomes. Knowing the cost of various tests and treatments helps me evaluate whether there might be a money motive I should know about. Consumer Reports did a report on biologics for RA in March 2013, and that document includes prices for those treatments. Elsewhere on the internet, I found a chart "Comparison of Musculoskeletal Imaging Modalities" in a scientific paper that offers a quick overview of Cost, Accuracy, Risk (radiation exposure) and Time (to do the procedure) for Radiography (X-Ray), Ultrasonography, MRI and CT scans. I realize costs vary wildly by geographic region, and the data would go out of date, but the RELATIVE costs are very important to know, and the variations in costs between medical establishments, even in the same geographic area, are frankly offensive when sick and injured people can't easily compare costs between institutions. My least favorite part of this book is the tone of the "Coping with Emotions" chapter. All of the information given is sound, but the author's tone got just a little too "self help book" for me in that section. Admittedly, I'm more data driven and I don't enjoy self-help books. I was also looking for physical/medical advice when I borrowed this book. No doubt the emotional component is vitally important for successful management of an autoimmune disease, but reading about it now (without a diagnosis) just made me kind of grumpy as I think I'd rather not think about it!Other useful sections of the book that I wanted but didn't know for sure I would find therein were:* alternative and complementary therapies* diet (including discussion of gluten-free, Mediterranean, paleo)* financial issues (insurance issues, medication costs issues)* travel with RAI'm grateful that this book was available at my local public library, and it was an easy decision to spend my own few dollars to purchase the Kindle version. If I find any issues with the formatting in the electronic version, I'll update my review. The paperback version was well-formatted and a great reference. The weight of the heavy (trade paperback size) book did present a reading challenge for me with the current state of my hand and wrist pain, however.

As a newly diagnosed RA patient, this was my favorite book out of the several I consumed looking for information. Very knowledgeable and easy to read, it addressed questions I had and several I hadn't thought of yet. I liked that it also gave opinions on alternative treatments and what research there was, whether it looked promising or skeptical. Highly recommend.

I have rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and I personally liked how the author explained the science behind the disease and how the different RA prescription medications work within your immune system. Very well written and up to date. A must if you have RA and want to learn more about the disease. Thank you Dr. Sholtzhauer.

Great book. I was diagnosed a year ago and constantly refer back to this book everytime I get a new symptom or my treatment plan changes.

This book provides a great overview of the disease, treatments and life style changes that come with rheumatoid arthritis. I would highly recommend it for those who want to better understand how this chronic disease is likely impact someone with RA.

Probably the best fact related book about RA. I wish it had been a bit less on the depression part but all in all a good reference book for those with RA and those who have loved ones with RA.

This is a good introductory book with very practical information on all aspects of RA. It has useful resources and it's well organized and written in language anyone can understand. It's a good place to start.

"Photography, which has so many narcissistic uses, it also a powerful instrument for depersonalizing our relation to the world." This statement is emblematic of the author's attitude throughout her dazzling but ultimately deflating analysis of photography. Sontag's intellect is unquestionably clear-eyed and sharp, but her consistent comparisons of photography to consumption, theft, and even rape wore me down as a reader. I don't have the rhetorical muscle to challenge her points and would have to concede many of them; as someone who likes to take pictures her book left me feeling flat. If you are seeking something attesting to photography's virtues as an art form, you'll find very little here. But On Photography is so well written it is worth reading anyway for its many kernels of wisdom . . . however distasteful they are at times.

This got me thinking about photography in a way I never have. Now I have a strong understanding of what the medium is, and a better grasp of what to do to make my work stand out. Ms. Sontag is an intellectual without peer, her choice of words so eclectic yet perfect in expressing her deep understanding of this field. It's a pleasure to sink ones mind into her words, revel in her clarifications, soak up her insights and intelligence. This book is a classic for a reason. If you're a photographer trying to get a greater grasp of what it takes to be grand or noticed in this business, you will walk away with a deeper understanding of this world and its history. A terrific asset to any photographer gravitating towards the arts.

As everything she wrote, Susan Sontag's book on photography is brilliant. It is a set of essays on the "philosophy" of picture-taking and the meaning of photography in the modern (ca. 1970) world. Anyone interested in the social roles of photography will find this book fascinating and thought-provoking. I originally read it when it first came out and was immensely impressed and a second reading showed it to be as impressive now as then, even though the technology and use of photography has changed a good deal.

This should be a must read for any photographer whose mind seeks to go beyond the technical aspects of photography. When I read it, many of her comments were aimed at those "snapshot prints" that ended up in photo albums, thus lacked impact for me as digital photography was then my new medium. Now, with the the iPhone or equivalent running amuck, and the age of "selfies", which I would rename "narcisstics" for the "me, me, me" crowd, it regains impact. Yes, the medium is the message.I didn't like much of what she said as she was your typical leftist intellectual. The truth is she really had something to say about the meaning and content of photography. This alone puts her in a class probably by herself. I love photography and have been taking pictures since 1959. I don't know of one other book that even comes close to dealing with the real impact of photography. It is not a book for the "sheeple". If you are serious about photography - read it! It should make you angry, and challenge your beliefs. We all need more of that. I'm re-reading it now for about the tenth time. Every time I read it I get something new and challenging from it. You can't say that about many books today.

I'm through the first chapter so far it's communicated a lot of very simplistic, redundant statements to me. They're good, I suppose, but the rest is just babble....comparing cameras to guns, penises...yeesh. She observes things through very small frames that fall apart if you step outside of and question them for a moment. I'm reading it for a course and it has all the depth you'd expect from a photography theory (not much).

I must confess that it was a difficult read and was not really rewarding. There were some insightful statements and observation but the essays were boring. One fatal defect was the lack of illustration which was quite impractical when you were discussing or describing photos.

The printing has been done by a third party. It’s cheap and takes all the pleasure of holding a book away. I do not understand how to report this amazon prime scam. ‘New’ prime books are likely to be poor quality reprints. Theres no way to know what you are going to get (angry emoji)

I really liked this book because I have a different way to look at the world. Sontag really makes you think about perspective. I also loved how well read and/or verse she is in world literature.
