From the Inside Flap

Alligators in the Sewer, a comprehensive collection of urban legends, compiles hundreds of thse wild and entertaining tales. With themes that run the gamut from funny to sick, risque to informative, frightening to disgusting and bizaree, urban folklore can chill spines, spark smiles or turn stomachs, aand the stories are remarkable for their uncanny ability to travel by word of mouth--often with a few subtle changes catering to the needs of whoever is retelling them. They've been celebrated in newspapers, movies, and , most notably, on the late 20th century's misinformation superhighway: the internet. But far from a contemporary phenomenon, the urban legend has been around since medieval times, and it's the irresistible and intriguing nature of the stories--distinctly dark, invariably humorous, and always just plausible enough to be believed--that allows them to endure. These tales play on our collective fears and anxieties, and they're compelling because no one can be sure which stories are true, which are elaborate embellishments of facts, and which h are the result of nothing more than a twisted imagination and a flair for story-telling. All the favorites are hear and arranged by genre--from "The Stolen Kidney and Other Medical Mishaps" to "Naked at his Own Surprise Party and Other Sexual Escapades," plus hundreds more strange-but-perhaps-not-completely-untrue anecdotes. Some of these legends have resurfaced in different forms again and again through the years--like the tales of King Arthur's life-after-death that bear a striking resemblance to rumors about the afterlives of modern heroes like Elvis Presley, Andy Kaufman, and Tupac Shakur. When available, each story's variations through history have been included, along with all the modern versions. From Roswell, New Mexico to the thieves who left only the toothbrush and the camera, Alligators in the Sewer is a novel examination of pop culture's shady underbelly as well as an authoritative reference of contemporary folklore with stories guaranteed to amuse, enlighten and freak you out.

This book was a good read, It has a lot of urban legends, some I have heard before, and some I have not. It is easy to read and the stories are short, about a page each. The thing that I think was the "neatest" was in the back of the book, there are some blank pages to write your own urban legends, which I thought was good, because I have heard some that are not in this book, and some I have heard differently than what this book tells, like the Jersey Devil. Anywhoo!! Easy to read, short, cute stories that leave you wondering if they're based on true stories or not!! =)

I teased my mother after she bought this book at a used bookstore. I saw the title and thought it was probably some cheesy mess of mindless superstition. Then I borrowed it and read it in a matter of hours. I just couldn't put it down. I was amazed at how many of the stories in the book I had heard before, almost always presented as 100% fact. Such as, "I have a friend of a friend who went to surprise her husband at a party thinking he would be dressed like Zorro..." or "Don't go down to Lovers Lane-- there's an escaped mental patient who waits for young, vulnerable couples." Even more surprising to me was that one of the urban legends had been passed off as fact by the administrators when I was in high school. The rumor had gotten started that gang members were putting AIDS tainted needles in theater seats and pay phone coin slots and my high school's administration sent out a memo to the teachers (I kid you not) to never stick their fingers into a coin slot no matter how badly they needed the change and to be very cautious when selecting a theater seat. Maybe there is some bit of truth that urban legends like that one are based on but I think so often each person who tells the legend embellishes a little more until finally, the finished product is totally wacky.I liked that this book works at dispelling belief in these legends rather than glamorizing them or giving some drawn out backstory on how they came about. If you are looking for something from the historical perspective, this is not the book for you. If instead you are looking for a book that delivers quick information in an entertaining way, this *is* the urban legends book for you.

I finished this book today and most of the time, i couldn't put it down. Unlike the bigger, bulkier books with lots of history behind them, this one gets right to the point. I do like the ones with the history, and even though this book provides some information like different variations or when the story started, sometimes I wanted more. There are a ton of legends in here though--and its very easy to read--its like hearing a good joke and you can't wait for the punchline. Even though some of them scared me--the poodle in the microwave (i can never read that one without cringing) and Bloody Mary (I still can't look into a mirror around midnight--cause then i will think of this story---you dont even have to do it at midnight, but for some reason, i always connect it to that!!)Plus, there are fun ones, like the college ones I enjoyed since i just graduated--i also loved hearing how elvis is alive and paul is dead.Quick and easy read... a "no nonsense" urban legends book! :)

Alligators in the Sewer is a collection of 223 urban legends. The book was published back in 1999 and a lot of the legends within have been republished many times on both the Internet and in other later published urban legend books. Also TV programs such as Myth Busters have debunked some of these such as the scuba diver in the forest fire. Still this book is a good collection, a great read and most of the big well known legends are in here.In comparison to Craughwell's latest book Old Wives Tales Fact or Fiction, Alligators in the Sewer is not as well laid out and lacks the paragraphs after each myth where the myth is either proven to be true or proven to be false. But we have to remember this book was written back in 1999 and if you see a copy on a library or book shelf, definitely pick it up.

This is an entertaining book (and probably another good bathroom book), though I was occasionally nonplussed at what was considered an urban legend. It of course contains the familiar stories: alligators in New York sewers, people waking up in their hotel rooms sans kidneys, the poodle in the microwave, etc. Other stories included are actually true: the guy who attaches balloons to his lawn chair (there are news articles online about this), the person who trains pigeons to congregate in response to a referee's whistle. (The latter I heard from an MIT student whom I have no reason to distrust.)Still others partake more of the horror-story-around-a-campfire than the usual urban legend, i.e., there seems to be no real reason to believe the story. But it's entertaining (and easy) reading nonetheless--a lot of fun.

A guide to urban legends should be required reading for the Internet. It is freshing to have many of these stories gathered up into one place. Did any one really wake up with one Kidney? Do baby alligators that live in the sewer really come out to attack people? All of these stories do seem somewhat plausible for a moment. Read this book for peace of mind, and then enlighten your friends with the truth. This book is perfect to read when you are waiting for a train, or at the doctors office. No heavy reading here, but rather something nice, light, and entertaining.

For obvious reasons I needed laugh this week. Alligators in the Sewer turned out to be just what I needed. Everyone of these urban legends is a classic and I remembered several of these stories from my childhood. Bloody Mary, the Hairy Hitchhiker, the Killer in the Backseat and of course the grandaddy of all the legends, the Girl Who Keeps Trying to Get Home are all here.I loved it.

Everyone has their childhood book that they cherish from when they were little squirts. This is my book. 5/5 for excellent tales that are fun and sometimes spooky. Definately something to read over a campfire for sure!
