Money, Greed, and God: Why Capitalism Is the Solution and Not the Problem, by Jay W. Richards

Review

“In Money, Greed, and God, Jay Richards has written the definitive case for capitalism, a crisply written and incisive discourse on wealth and poverty, money and morality for the 21st Century.” (George Gilder, co-founder of the Discovery Institute and author of Wealth and Poverty)“Jay Richards understands the objections to capitalism, and here explains why they do not convince him. The empirical findings revealed in Money, Greed, and God run against those objections.” (Michael Novak, Chair in Religion and Public Policy at the American Enterprise Institute)“In Money, Greed, and God, Jay Richards shows us . . . a capitalism grounded in the truth about human beings as free, morally responsible, co-creators charged with dominion and stewardship of the earth by the loving God to whom we are all ultimately accountable.” (Rev. Robert A. Sirico, President of the Acton Institute)“Money, Greed, and God is both thoughtful and important.” (Washington Times)

A much needed corrective to the (failed) statist-leaning tendencies of today's young Christians. RIchards' story is helpful especially in his recounting of how he was brainwashed by a close-minded professor. His intellectual struggle to find his way out of that mushy minded morass is also useful for alerting us to more statist-leaning causes in disguise (radical environmentalism comes to mind). I wanted more details after reading this book, and a great one to follow up is The Poverty of Nations: A Sustainable SolutionUntil the low-information masses come to grips with the concept that wealth is not a static pie but can be constantly enlarged by the application of human creativity and hard work. books like this should be required reading for our youth so that they can sidestep the waste of years that ensues from advocating causes that hurt rather than help the world's poor, such as "wealth redistribution."

This book should be read by all Christians, especially those who do not agree with proposition in the title. I, for one, used to be tossed on the waves of uncertainty now have clarity.

One of my favorite books on the contrast between capitalism and communism. This book provides a Judeo-Christian look at how capitalism has helped pull the third-world out of much poverty. Definitely worth a read no matter what side of the fence you are on in economics.

The discerning thinker should make a habit of reading books written from perspectives other than his own, with which he or she is sure to disagree, and which will challenge his thinking by presenting views contrary to those he holds dear. For me, this is not that book. For me, this is a book I wish I had written, with which I could find nary a word with which to disagree.Jay Richards is or has been affiliated with the Heritage Foundation, the Discovery Institute, and the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, for whom I worked for 4 years.Richards spends a chapter tearing apart each of these myths about capitalism:1. The Nirvana Myth (contrasting capitalism iwth an unrealizable ideal rather than with its live alternatives)2. The Piety Myth (focusing on our good intentions rather than on the unintended consequences of our actions)3. The Zero-Sum Game Myth (believing that trade requires a winner and a loser)4. The Materialist Myth (believing that wealth isn't created, it's simply transferred)5. The Greed Myth (believing that the essence of capitalism is greed)6. The Usury Myth (believing that working with money is inherently immoral or that charging interest on money is always exploitative)7. The Artsy Myth (confusing aesthetic judgments with economic arguments)8. The Freeze-Frame Myth (believing that things always stay the same--for example, assuming that population trends will continue indefinitely, or treating a current "natural resource" as if it will always be needed)The basic point of Money, Greed, and God, as the subtitle ("Why Capitalism is the Solution and Not the Problem") suggests, is that capitalism, more so than collectivist or socialist solutions touted by many Christians, offers a structure which can foster prosperity and virtue, and, more importantly, is not by its nature in conflict with the Gospel and teachings of the Bible. What he writes is controversial to some, and he does name names, but his tone is friendly, engaging and sympathetic. I get the impression that when he debates people, even people with who he heartily disagrees, at the end of the debate he and his foe can be buddies. Some might argue that Christians who defend capitalism have no regard for the poor. Richards debunks that perspective while providing a thorough, readable defense of capitalism.

This was just a perfect book. Well written and interesting while also providing insightful details and illustrations explaining how free markets are both good for society and biblically grounded.

Quick shipping...as promised! ...thank you !

This is now one of my all-time favorite books. I wish I could buy a copy for everyone I know. Jay Richards is an expert in economics and a Christian. Having once been opposed to capitalism himself, he does a great job of explaining the arguments behind anti-capitalist sentiments, and then he effectively explains the inadequacy of those arguments. I've spent a lot of time in many different countries on four continents, and I've seen how every other economic system in the world harms, restricts, and oppresses its people. More than two billion people worldwide are stuck in true poverty and have no opportunity to improve their situation, while we in the U.S. have every opportunity to improve our situation. Even our "poor" live significantly better than the overwhelming majority in the developing world, thanks to the free market economy that has been a foundation of our country since its inception. Given this obvious reality, I've attributed anti-capitalist beliefs to ignorance and folly, but this book helped me to understand the thinking behind those beliefs and now I am equipped to engage in a thoughtful, respectful, and intelligent conversation with people of other views. Thank you, Jay Richards!

If you believe Christians are supposed to live on barely get along street and always suffer without. If you believe that capitalism is anti-GodIf you believe work is part of the curse,I urge you to read this book. Important for such a time as this.

Review

“Like Hedrick Smith’s The Russians, Sharon Hudgins’ The Other Side of Russia, takes the reader inside Russia, to the daily life of people, and the economic and political realities in the post-Soviet era. It goes well beyond being a travelogue, and provides insight well beyond the confines of Siberia. A great read.”--Helen Hundley (Helen Hundley)

In THE OTHER SIDE OF RUSSIA, the University of Maryland University College has established a joint undergraduate degree program in business management with the Far Eastern State University in Vladivostok and the State University in Irkutsk. In the summer of 1993, author Sharon Hudgins and her husband, Tom, packed off to Siberia and the Russian Far East to serve as teachers in this cooperative venture, while the former was also Maryland's on-site program coordinator in both cities. This book chronicles their experiences from their arrival until their departure in December 1994.Whether she's describing the immensity of pristine Lake Baikal, the problematic living conditions in their high-rise apartment, local customs and food of the Buryat people, the vagaries and perils of shopping for household necessities, maddening water and electricity outages, local festivals, the growing pains of a free-market economy, the university students' learning ethic, or the conviviality and generosity of their Russian friends, Hudgins has a keen eye for small details, as when describing an open air market:"An Uzbek woman ... sold raisins and nuts in small paper cones made out of official forms from the Irkutsk Municipal Water Department ... In one part of the market, a pretty teenage girl, wearing a garish, flower-printed dress and a thousand-yard stare, held a handful of peacock feathers and sipped a can of Dr Pepper, while in another section two older women, both drunk, tried to punch each other out in a fist fight."I haven't been so engaged by a travel essay about Russia since Hedrick Smith's 1976 bestseller, THE RUSSIANS. My only criticism is the relative lack of photographs - only a couple at most per chapter. Luckily, Sharon's poetic prose paints pictures almost as effective as snapshots, as this from her vantage point on the Trans-Siberian Railroad:"A profusion of wildflowers carpeted the meadows, like an Impressionist painting exuberantly expanding beyond the limits of canvas and frame: undulating shades of yellow, gold, and blue, maroon and magenta, soft pink and pristine white, the pale purple globes of wild onions gone to seed, thousands of red-orange tiger lilies, whole fields of dark purple Siberian irises, and occasionally a single red poppy or two, like a stubborn symbol of politics past. Outside Chita a small lake glistened under the midnight moon."For me, a travel narrative is all it can be if it makes me want to go there myself. THE OTHER SIDE OF RUSSIA accomplishes that. Well, maybe for just a brief visit, perhaps, because I certainly wouldn't want to live there.

The Other Side of Russia emerged from Barbara Hudgins experience of living in Siberia for a year and a half, from 1993 to 1994. Working as the onsite program coordinator for the University of Maryland University College in Siberia and the Russian Far East, she worked and lived in Vladivostok and Irkutsk.Hudgins book is the first book about Siberia I'd come across written by someone who spent extensive time in Siberia. This gives her a depth of understanding that adds a lot to her memoir. The structure of her memoir is unusual. She's divided the book into two sections. The chapters in part one focus on place - Irkutsk, Vladivostok, Lake Baikal, etc. - and the chapters in the second part focus on aspects of life and culture in Siberia - housing, education, food and festivals. Hudgins supplemented her first-hand experience with extensive research. This offers readers an in-depth source of information about many aspects of Siberian place and life. What's lost in this non-chronological format is Hudgin's own adaptations and reactions over her time in Siberia. She does insert some feelings and personality, but the focus is on the topic, rather than on her personal experience or characters who change and develop over the period.Hudgins seems to have thrown herself into Siberia with a remarkably open mind. She expertly captures the small details of Siberian life and renders vivid pictures of feasts shared with Russian friends. For those who have been to Siberia, this book will take you back there. For those planning on going, The Other Side of Russia provides a great overview of the life and culture.

My wife has been getting a lot of good information about life in Soviet Russia from this as well as the recipes.

a great insider story

well researched with abundant details of life at the time in irkutsk and vladivostock during 193-4

If you are interested in the average person's life in Communist Russia this would be a good book to read. The author did a really great job describing the "bad-attitudes" toward Americans living or visiting foreign countries, that we all have experienced while traveling!Besides that.....the book gives you an idea of the hardships suffered every day by the Russian people, just to have to wait in line for bread, and various food items, many of which were not even available! True as true can be, the Russian shopkeepers there had sullen, rude, nasty dispositions and attitudes toward Americans, just as they do in the US. If you don't believe me, just go into a Russian Market right here in our own country! It's disgusting! Well, the author and her husband made the best of a very bad situation while working and teaching there. I myself would NEVER have their patience!

I'm returning this book because it's based on Oracle 8! We are migrating to Oracle 11 and I really need something much more up-to-date than a 10 year-old book. Unfortunately, neither Amazon or the the book cover make any hint or reference to applying to Oracle 8.

This is limited to the Oracle PL/SQL methodology. The data presentation does provide examples to assist in understanding coding. No z/OS references are contained.

I generally agree with the other reviewers on this book - despite some errors, it is a solid set of PL/SQL lessons. Great results can be produced by using the book as designed (download a copy of Personal Oracle, and spend three hours a day hacking the &@:=#! out of it). However, these favorable reviews can be misleading, as they lack a "Who is this book for?" section. Unlike many "Teach Yourself" titles, this is not good reading for the absolute novice. To get the most from this book, you should have:1. Functional and theoretical knowledge of at least one high-level programming language.2. A good understanding of database theory and terminology.3. Some experience with SQL (and ideally with Oracle, but if you can make Access do tricks, you'll be fine).4. Three weeks off. ;-)

This book is pretty good. Each of the 21 lessons takes a couple of hours to read, so the pace is about right. I learned a lot of PL/SQL from this book, so I'm glad I bought it.The book is pooly edited, though, and is full of errors. A couple of times there were serious errors in the example programs, but they weren't enough to spoil the book.If you have a little programming experience, you might try just using the PL/SQL chapters in the Oracle8: The Complete Reference. You're going to need a book like that anyway....

This book is not the best option for a newbie or for someone without access to Oracle. (***From page 12, you need an Oracle database and SQL*Plus to complete the exercises.)The book is written in a way that the material doesn't make sense without the hands-on. I see that the text includes a lot of exercises but I don't see screen shots.Last, my text actually seemed photocopied on the inside--the grayscale art seemed like it was fresh from the copy shop...not exactly what I expected.I wouldn't but this book again.

This is a great beginners book for pl/sql syntax, and it is also useful as a quick reference. I found it very helpful when doing advanced pl/sql as well. Overall, an excellent text.

If you, like me, are distracted by printing errors and mistakes, then do not buy this book. Wait for a (much?) later printing. I cannot learn from such a book. This is one of the most disappointing book buys I have made.

At least half of the code examples I tried would not run. It is really frustrating to have a training guide where you cannot trust any of the examples to be coded correctly. I am amazed anyone would give this book a positive rating.
