You need to be Jewish to really appreciate this book. Some of these I heard as a kid when our family would get together, and some are from the old Jewish comedians I grew up listening to. If you are not Jewish, these are great that will definitely make you laugh. It just will probably not be a side splitting, Uncle Morris told that one, since you probably didn't grow up with old Jews! Great book!

Before purchasing this book, I read parts in a store and was impressed. Now that I have had the opportunity to read the whole book, I found the jokes on the whole to be original and first rate. I liked the background on the tellers which allowed for a better understanding of how the particular joke developed.I would recommend a leisurely journey through the book, enjoying each joke and sharing it with someone who would also appreciate it,

This is an entertaining book. It's one you can reread and enjoy again.

Laughter is the spice of living a great life and staying healthy. My husband, who is Jewish and I went on vacation with some of his cousins and his sister and her husband. Every day, at breakfast and during the day we would pull this book out and we'd randomly ope n to a page and read a joke. We would roar with laughter and disrupt the whole restaurant. We did this every day and had the best time together. We gifted each with this book and they took it home with them to share the laughter and the love. Wonderful book that has given much joy and love.

I'm so enjoying reading the cute jokes in this book. I recommend it, especially in these stressful times, when a laugh or chuckle is most welcome!

I started reading the website when it first appeared online. Adorable. I bought the book for a friend who was starting chemo, because I thought she needed a good laugh (I read it before giving it to her). She loved it. She saw the play in NYC and hurt from laughing. That's my next stop.

Funny book I liked it

The stories in this book had me laughing for days. I loved telling them to my friends. BEST FUNNY BOOK!

I just attended Dan's most recent workshop north of Atlanta. I bought the book, assuming it would be very similar to all of the other Tiny House books I have. I WAS WRONG. This book passes the Tiny House concept from an idea to REAL. Dan guides the reader through the details such as tools needed and why, best way to order material, the details of the trailer and weights, framing, flashing, sheathing, wrapping, hardware, layouts, etc. This book is for those who are READY to really do it! I have dozens of books on Tiny Houses and there is no book like this one. Someone who has never seen a power tool can build a tiny house with the guidance of this book. I am an experienced carpenter and I learned a LOT including techniques specific to Tiny Houses. What is really important that Dan covers is the WHY he does each step the way he does. That's the difference. A lot of carpenters can build a house on a trailer, but will not think of what it takes for it to GO DOWN THE ROAD, ( ie- the tongue weight of vehicle, towing weight, how to bolt it to the trailer, strap it down, best support configuration of trailer and why, etc.) I would suggest attending one of his workshops, especially for beginners, to SEE the safest way to use power tools and to USE it while Dan supervises. The icing on the cake for me, is that Dan's company sells the trailers, so you can buy one already correctly put together. (I also learned that he is now offering a place to build your tiny house if you don't have enough room or are forbidden to build one in your yard.) I give this book a huge applause!!!

If you are a novice this is a great resource.....I would have preferred more detail on plumbing, framing etc. It will Give the reader alot to think about before consideringa Tiny House, I guess I am beyound that point though. He goes into great detail describing and telling you know to say 2x4, I guess if you need this you should probablyre-consider whether you should be building your own tiny house vs purchasing. Also they should remove design from thetitle, very little is discussed about design, except for room placement, which I did find helpful, and gave me something tothink about. Again great resource for someone just starting out.

I was hoping for so much more. There is some very good information, but I couldn't help but feel like there is so much missing from this information. This book will help most people who are considering a DIY Tiny Home. Some of the information in this book seems differ from what others consider to be "best practice" though. For example most of the Tiny house designs I have seen are using PEX for plumbing. This book mentions PEX as an option, but claims that CVPC is a much better option for Tiny Houses. I would have liked more elaboration as to why. Also, in the Roof section it concentrates almost exclusively on gable roof design. How come nothing about shed roofs? That is a hugely popular option for Tiny Homes and it isn't even mentioned. I don't regret the purchase, but I was certainly hoping for more.

This is an excellent guide for designing amd building a "tiny house" on a trailer chassis. From these semi-general, semi-specific guidelines, anyone who is fairly competant with handtools and home repairs can create a movable home of their own that can be as green as they wish. I read one review that said roughly "He only give a guide for one specific home on one specific trailer", well he might not have actually taken the time to read the words !? I say if someone needs more of a guide than this, perhaps Bagawino or some other RV purvayer could serve them better. As for me I prefer a guide like this that tells me what works, what does not. He explaines pros and cons of different options for different scenarios. With the tools provided in this guide, I can use what I know, learn what I don't know, and make decisions om the construction of my place.Does it have shortcomings? Well, yes...I had to pay money for it, He didn't hand deliver it to me with a free trailer, He didn't read my mind ahead of time and write it for the exact application I envision, and worst of all, He didn't bring this book to my attention a long time ago.Good info guide, very well illustrated, quite detailed and helpful. Highly recommended.

At this time, this book is the best around, I guess. It's a rather thin book, actually---3/8". I felt that the explanations could have been better. There were many pages of photos of tools you'll need, which looked like space-filler. There needed to be more diagrams, i felt and the only ones were those the author took from elsewhere, like electrical diagrams. There were many details the author glossed over seemingly because HE understands the process. He's a traditional builder, apparently, so he approaches Tiny House building from that standpoint. He uses tar paper under the roof and in my experience tar paper is virtually worthless as it is not waterproof and it rots. I also didn't like that he built a flooring platform on top of the Car trailer, losing 3.5" of height. I know this is a standard practice, even in traditional house building, but it always seemed dumb to me because then your joists are just stuck on. But in a TH, you should try to integrate the floor into the wells of the trailer. Anyway, I think the author is a builder, not a writer and may have benefitted from some outside assistance. But in closing, if you want an overview of all the processes this is the best for what's around at the moment.

Bought this book to read because I'm curious about the tiny house movement-no plans to build one anytime soon but honestly, after reading this, I feel like I could. This book takes you through step by step, its well written, easy to understand (I have a strong background in construction but even if you don't you will be able to follow along in this book!) and the author offers tips and insights that truly shows he knows what he's talking about.

A Decent Life: Morality for the Rest of Us, by Todd May

Review

"May has a knack for presenting philosophical concepts in ways that are easily graspable, and his advice for living 'a life with a goal more modest than altruism, but better than moral mediocrity' makes such a goal seem attainable for a wide audience. Anyone interested in living a more morally conscious life will want to give this wise guide a look."   (Publishers Weekly)"In the face of great injustice or radical indecency, it is tempting to give up our moral lives altogether. The challenges of being good seem impossibly daunting. Todd May has given us just a little bit of hope--a few practical suggestions for becoming just a little bit more decent. A Decent Life is the kind of book I will give to my students--or to my daughter: a humble, down-to-earth primer for living ethically in a world that seems intent on destroying itself. May has written a more-than-decent book. It is genuinely good." (John Kaag, author of Hiking with Nietzsche: On Becoming Who You Are)"Some philosophers have argued that morality requires us repeatedly to sacrifice our wealth and pleasure for the sake of others, including distant strangers and even animals. Recognizing that most people believe otherwise and are unwilling to live this way, Todd May offers an alternative, more realistic vision of the moral life that is neither saintly nor heroic but nonetheless decent. In writing that is lucid and enlivened by stories drawn from his own and other people's experiences, he reveals how, by showing appropriate respect for the fact that others (including animals) have lives of their own to live, we can satisfy the demands of morality while retaining our ability to have fulfilling and meaningful lives. Particularly in its discussion of our relations with political opponents, this book is a timely, illuminating, and inspiring work of moral philosophy." (Jeff McMahan, University of Oxford)"Moral philosophy often appears either as a very technical discipline or as a set of demands to be altruistic that few if any of us can realize. In this book, Todd May articulates the extremely appealing idea of a decent life as an alternative. He writes with the clarity of an analytical philosopher, but about existential themes that are usually addressed by continental thinkers. The book is almost completely without technical language, full of thought-provoking examples from everyday life, and it will be an edifying read for everyone who aspires to be a decent human being." (Svend Brinkman, author of Standpoints: Ten Old Ideas in a New World)

Todd May is a professor of philosophy at Clemson University who has written books on subjects like poststructuralist anarchism. These books are not likely to show up on most people’s bookshelves or Kindles, but this book might and maybe even should.A number of philosophers throughout the ages have developed schools of ethical thought, and in the first chapter May discusses theories like consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics from thinkers like Immanuel Kant, Aristotle, and Peter Singer. The problem with most of these theories, in May’s opinion, is that they set the bar too high or too abstractly, and it would be difficult to live up to their requirements. So A Decent Life doesn’t try to define what it means to lead a “good life” at a level that most people could not attain, such as altruism. Instead it lays out how we might lead a “decent life”, an approach that recognizes our moral limits. It also avoids for the most part casting moral actions in terms of duties or obligations but instead emphasizes conducting ourselves to make other lives and “our often fraught world” a little better off because of our presence.May’s approach to morality has a simple framework, “the idea that decent moral action recognizes that there are others in the world who have lives to live.” The rest of the chapters describe the various aspects of a decent life within that framework. First, there are our relations with the people closest to us, those with whom we have personal contact. Then there are the other people with whom we share our world or who come before or after us in the world. Broadening our recognition of other lives a bit further, another chapter talks about being decent to nonhuman life (even if you are allergic to them, as May is to cats!). The final aspect of the moral life is political, which recognizes that we are all members of some organized society, a political entity. In the concluding chapter, May tells us how we can use the stories we tell about ourselves to help us recognize what our own values are.May’s writing is insightful, often in ways I had not expected. I was struck, for example, by his description of the impact of gazing directly into someone’s face and how it makes us recognize that other person as an entity, a living being. Most of the chapters lay out general frameworks that will fit people in very different environments and with many different values. In the chapter on Politics and Decency, though, he becomes very prescriptive and is likely to alienate if not actually offend many decent people. For example, he says, “In the United States,…we cannot think about our political situation without taking into account the history of racial oppression. To attempt to ask the question of acting in a politically decent manner without reflecting on race would be to miss a central defining aspect of that situation”. He rejects the value system that many non-racist people espouse that prefers more race-blind attitudes. Both of these should be respected as “decent” approaches to political discourse. In addition, his discussion of political action is almost entirely about protest and opposition. He does disapprove of lack of civility in protests or instances when liberal protestors attempt to keep a conservative speaker from appearing on a college campus (or vice versa). However, there is little or no reference to more positive and cooperative paths to political morality, like working in political campaigns, serving on board and commissions, testifying on legislation, or lobbying for programs. The overall message from this chapter is that a decent life politically must agree with the author’s political philosophy, and as a result, many readers may reject what is otherwise an excellent book.If you share Todd May’s commitment to poststructuralist anarchism, this is definitely the book for you. Even if your approach to being decent politically differs from his, if you can ignore your likely reaction to May’s recipe for living a decent life politically, there is a lot to like and a lot to learn in A Decent Life. As the subtitle says, it is about morality for the rest of us.My thanks to Netgalley for an advance review copy of this book.
