I will start off by saying that Laura Thalassa started with a great idea, and slowly turned it into just another cliché. The Vanishing Girl is a story about a girl named Ember who has the ability to teleport. So far so good, because teleporting is of the least exploited paranormal talents. Then, Ember gets shipped off to a facility full of other teleporters who are used by the government as a weapon. So far the story is still interesting, because there is much mystery surrounding this government project that all the teleporters are part of. Then, Ember begins to fall in love with Caden, and this, in my opinion, is when the story begins to go downhill. Now, I love a good romance as much as the next girl, but one that makes sense! Ember is trying to escape and she knows that the government has sinister secrets she wishes to uncover, yet she decides to start a passionate relationship with the very person that captures her? I mean, Caden is described as being very sexy and he is charming and such, but one would think escape and finding out the truth would be more important for our heroine. Ember seems to forget all about her family, friends and taking back control of her life as soon as Caden utters a few provocative words. Also, I feel like their relationship evolves much too quickly from hostile to can't-be without-you-for-a-second. Ember, at the beginning, keeps telling herself she won't let what she feels towards Caden ruin her plans, but this is essentially what happens. It makes Ember seem weak, desperate and not very heroic. Overall, this sounds like I'm against romance, but truly, I am not. It's just that the book would have been better without such a relationship; especially because after they officially acknowledge their passionate love for each other, most of the scenes that follow are about sex and/or making out. I found it repetitive how the author uses up most of the book to describe scenes of sex, kissing and/or other similar actions. It is until the end of the book that we finally see some real action, and then the book ends, when the reader is still hungry for more. I do believe I will be looking for the sequel, mostly because I am interested in the main storyline; I just hope the author focuses more on the desperate situation Ember is in, rather than the lust and sexual desire she feels towards Caden 24/7.
3.5 StarsThis book is great but also so frustrating and infuriating. I loved it but hated some of it at the same time. The Vanishing Girl is book one in the series by the same name. It is about 18 year old Ember Pierce who learns she is the result of a government experiment and is kidnapped and forced to attend training and become a spy. She, along with the other captive teenagers, can teleport for 10 minutes each night and during those minutes she is forced to do government missions. Ember meets her pair and her mission partner, Caden Hawthorne. They quickly fall in love. This book was exciting and fun but there was one thing that repeatedly made me so angry. Ember did not want to be there, she was held against her will, she wasn't happy; yet the night she arrives at the facility she immediately falls into line. They ask her if she would like a tour, she says "Sure". The next morning she wakes up and goes to her classes as she is instructed. She follows the directions of the teachers. This whole time, I am screaming at the book. If someone forced me somewhere against my will and told me this is my new life and here is my class schedule, I am quite certain that the first words out of my mouth would be a slew of expletives and I would be throwing out a whole bag of nopes. I would turn down the tour. I would not leave my room to go to classes. I would argue, fight, question, demand answers, etc. I would throw a temper tantrum and not be pleasant. Sure, they would probably force me or threaten me or something, but I would at least begin my time there with stubborn refusal of orders. Once I got it out of my system and saw that I had no other options, I might go with the flow but certainly not before that. I needed to see something, anything, from Ember that was like a normal teenage or any age human reaction to this sudden change. I needed her to say no and demand answers at least a bit in the beginning just so that it could at least seem like a natural progression into her acceptance of the situation. That is the reason that I am not giving this book 4.5 - 5 stars.Other than that, I really enjoyed everything else about this book. I liked the main characters a lot. I thought the program and the missions made for an interesting story. I liked the mystery and the angst. I thought it was a lot of fun to read. I didn't want to put the book down. This book does end with a cliffhanger so you might want to keep that in mind if you don't like cliffhangers. I am excited to find out what happens next. Book 2, The Decaying Empire, is already out so that's good at least. The only concern I have is that I just found out that book 2 also ends in a cliffhanger and book 3 is not yet out. This author takes an extremely long time to write her books so I am worried about how long it will take for us to get the third and final book. It has been almost 3 years and the author says she is still writing it so who knows...Audible: I added the whispersync audible narration to this kindle book. The narrator was easy to listen to. Her voices weren't all that great but it was still an enjoyable narration. It didn't distract from the story.
