Shirrel Rhoades absolutely knows his stuff. And why not? He was one of the top executives at Marvel for years and helped bring them through some of their toughest times and lived through numerous takeovers. This book literally covers every aspect of American comic book history. After a very brief chapter on very early comic books, he begins with 1933's "Funnies on Parade" and gives us an in-depth journey from that point on with every "age" of the comics. From the Platinum Age to the Modern Age, you'll find some very interesting reading in here. It's obvious that Rhoades takes his job as a historian seriously, giving us interviews and quotes from creators of some of the beloved older characters, and a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the more modern ones were formed. Graphic novels are mentioned as well. There's also a section on selling your comic collection, profiles on industry insiders, a comic book industry timeline, and just for fun there are some quizzes in there as well.Rhoades talks about the individual publishers as well, and what made them succeed or ultimately fail. He has friends in DC as well as his connections to Marvel, so the Big Two are adequately exposed. Surprisingly, we also learn alot about Image Comics, EC Comics, and others. If you have any interest in comic books, you'll find this a straightforward, easy-to-read history. There's enough in here to keep your interest throughout. While I can't say it's the most comprehensive I've ever read, it's definitely worth the time. Highly recommended.

I will start off by saying that Laura Thalassa started with a great idea, and slowly turned it into just another cliché. The Vanishing Girl is a story about a girl named Ember who has the ability to teleport. So far so good, because teleporting is of the least exploited paranormal talents. Then, Ember gets shipped off to a facility full of other teleporters who are used by the government as a weapon. So far the story is still interesting, because there is much mystery surrounding this government project that all the teleporters are part of. Then, Ember begins to fall in love with Caden, and this, in my opinion, is when the story begins to go downhill. Now, I love a good romance as much as the next girl, but one that makes sense! Ember is trying to escape and she knows that the government has sinister secrets she wishes to uncover, yet she decides to start a passionate relationship with the very person that captures her? I mean, Caden is described as being very sexy and he is charming and such, but one would think escape and finding out the truth would be more important for our heroine. Ember seems to forget all about her family, friends and taking back control of her life as soon as Caden utters a few provocative words. Also, I feel like their relationship evolves much too quickly from hostile to can't-be without-you-for-a-second. Ember, at the beginning, keeps telling herself she won't let what she feels towards Caden ruin her plans, but this is essentially what happens. It makes Ember seem weak, desperate and not very heroic. Overall, this sounds like I'm against romance, but truly, I am not. It's just that the book would have been better without such a relationship; especially because after they officially acknowledge their passionate love for each other, most of the scenes that follow are about sex and/or making out. I found it repetitive how the author uses up most of the book to describe scenes of sex, kissing and/or other similar actions. It is until the end of the book that we finally see some real action, and then the book ends, when the reader is still hungry for more. I do believe I will be looking for the sequel, mostly because I am interested in the main storyline; I just hope the author focuses more on the desperate situation Ember is in, rather than the lust and sexual desire she feels towards Caden 24/7.

3.5 StarsThis book is great but also so frustrating and infuriating. I loved it but hated some of it at the same time. The Vanishing Girl is book one in the series by the same name. It is about 18 year old Ember Pierce who learns she is the result of a government experiment and is kidnapped and forced to attend training and become a spy. She, along with the other captive teenagers, can teleport for 10 minutes each night and during those minutes she is forced to do government missions. Ember meets her pair and her mission partner, Caden Hawthorne. They quickly fall in love. This book was exciting and fun but there was one thing that repeatedly made me so angry. Ember did not want to be there, she was held against her will, she wasn't happy; yet the night she arrives at the facility she immediately falls into line. They ask her if she would like a tour, she says "Sure". The next morning she wakes up and goes to her classes as she is instructed. She follows the directions of the teachers. This whole time, I am screaming at the book. If someone forced me somewhere against my will and told me this is my new life and here is my class schedule, I am quite certain that the first words out of my mouth would be a slew of expletives and I would be throwing out a whole bag of nopes. I would turn down the tour. I would not leave my room to go to classes. I would argue, fight, question, demand answers, etc. I would throw a temper tantrum and not be pleasant. Sure, they would probably force me or threaten me or something, but I would at least begin my time there with stubborn refusal of orders. Once I got it out of my system and saw that I had no other options, I might go with the flow but certainly not before that. I needed to see something, anything, from Ember that was like a normal teenage or any age human reaction to this sudden change. I needed her to say no and demand answers at least a bit in the beginning just so that it could at least seem like a natural progression into her acceptance of the situation. That is the reason that I am not giving this book 4.5 - 5 stars.Other than that, I really enjoyed everything else about this book. I liked the main characters a lot. I thought the program and the missions made for an interesting story. I liked the mystery and the angst. I thought it was a lot of fun to read. I didn't want to put the book down. This book does end with a cliffhanger so you might want to keep that in mind if you don't like cliffhangers. I am excited to find out what happens next. Book 2, The Decaying Empire, is already out so that's good at least. The only concern I have is that I just found out that book 2 also ends in a cliffhanger and book 3 is not yet out. This author takes an extremely long time to write her books so I am worried about how long it will take for us to get the third and final book. It has been almost 3 years and the author says she is still writing it so who knows...Audible: I added the whispersync audible narration to this kindle book. The narrator was easy to listen to. Her voices weren't all that great but it was still an enjoyable narration. It didn't distract from the story.

Nice big size but the story isn't really a story. I thought it would have some stories from the smaller books in it, but instead there are huge images and just bios on each of the dogs, etc. Nice for any little Paw Patrol fan but the lack of actual story will not keep me engaged to read it over and over again as a parent.

If you own the book "Pups to the Rescue" do not buy this book. My 3 year old son was so disappointed when we found out this is almost the exact same story with just a few words changed here and there. I'm going to return this book if I can.

There is NO story, only a description of each pup, Ryder & the lookout. I wish we could have seen the book before buying it. My 2 yr old Paw Patrol obsessed son is so disappointed. We bought the Pups to the Rescue book and the words are the same as this book but at least that book has stickers included... and it was half the price of this one! Don't buy this book, buy the other one with stickers or The Itty-Bitty Kitty Rescue book (my son LOVES it and we are getting ready to read it now)!!!

Bogus content. Big Book of Paw Patrol doesn't make me think it is going to be just a 'meet the characters' intro without a single adventure or story. If I saw this in the store, I'd have flipped through and known better but it is misleading, the description online. Buy one of the other soft covers on here or small golden books that have actual series episodes or stories. This is like zero content and if your kids KNOW the characters they don't need it.

It's not a story book. I thought it had stories from the paw patrol episodes like the Little Red Rescue book collection which my son loves or the story time collection of the Thomas the Tank Engine! This is just a big book introducing the characters. Not a story book and very thin! We don't like it at all!

I was surprised to find this on my Kindle, then realized my 3 year old grandson had bought it while I wasn't looking! He loves Paw Patrol, and at $1.99, that's not much to make him happy. I will be shutting the internet off before I leave him alone with it again, though.

The printed book was put into the binding upside-down. I was going to give this item as a gift at a kids party but I’m embarrassed to do so now after I opened it up.

My son wanted this so I got it for him. HE loves it - but it is just basically a list of the characters and what they do which I'm not impressed about. It's also not that big of a book being it's titled "The Big book of paw patrol"

This book is mainly just descriptions of the characters. I thought it would be a few stories, but it's just a larger little golden book. The thickness is about the same as the little golden books. Cute book, but I was imagining it'd be a thicker book. If I was purchasing again I would buy another actual little golden book, so I'd get a better story. Though the price and shipping was very good!

The good:Easy to follow.Great example code.Awesome simplification of concepts.Shows new technology.Friendly for beginners.Chapter challenges are good.Code compiles without error. The bad:Multithreading chapter was a rush job.Swing GUI was over emphasized for a 2018 book.Netbeans is quickly falling behind in modern developer usage.Does not teach how to create custom generic classes.Could cover the lastest topics such as JPA, etc.I'll make it easy for you:Beginner -> This book.Otherwise -> Java 9 for Programmers (Paul Deitel)

I bought his book on Python and mastered it. And now I bought the one Java. "No other book teaches you so much. so fast, so thoroughly". It's true to it's word. Though I'd like to see a little more code on the left hand side of the page(1 or 2 lines), and a little more text on the right though that might be sacrilege to Murach!

I have purchased two of these textbooks and will definitely purchase more. The beauty of these books is that they are broken into what I call 'mini lessons." I can look at a chapter and decide it has 14 mini lessons and that is manageable to me as opposed to saying I need to read 30 pages to cover the chapter. In addition, the best quality of the book is how it is laid out. Each mini lesson is two pages. The left page describes the material and the right page provides the examples. No longer do I have to hunt for the examples in the discussion. And the book as less than $100. This was a true bargain in the run away prices of textbooks in colleges these days especially in the STEM subjects.Excellent textbook for the classroom or leaning on your own.

Great book for learning. I already know several languages, this made an easy entry into Java

The material is understandable, and the exercise's source files are freely available on Murach's website.

Great book. Really insightful.

Murach's Java Programming (5th Edition) is a hands-on tutorial for people who are new to Java, or even new to programming in general. It walks you through step-by-step through installing Java and an integrated development environment (IDE). Each chapter builds upon the previous one, as it shows you how to work with variables, control statements, classes, objects, interfaces, strings, arrays, collections, exceptions, enums, and how to step through your program with a debugger. The beginning chapters focus on building small example applications that can be run from the command line console. Later chapters show how to read and write files, work with a database using JDBC, and build graphical user interfaces with Swing and JavaFX. The book employs a paired-pages format where a figure containing code, diagrams, and bullet points is on the right page, and the corresponding explanation is on the left page.At the end of every chapter are step-by-step hands-on exercises with solutions. The complete set of exercise files for every chapter and their solutions are available for download from the Murach website. The appendices in the book explain how to download and install the exercise files so you can modify them in your IDE as you work through the exercises. The book uses the Netbeans IDE, but there is a separate download and exercise files that walk you through using the Eclipse IDE if you would prefer that instead. As a beginning book, it is impossible to cover every feature of the Java language. Even so, the book does not cover some essential items that every Java program should know, and for these reasons I did not give it five stars. For example, the book does show how to override the equals method of an object, but does not show how to override the hashCode method which you must do to maintain the contract specified in the Object class if you override equals. Also, the coverage of collections includes Lists, Maps, Queues, and Deques, but has no coverage of Sets. I wish the chapter on debugging showed how to use the assert keyword and java.util.logging instead of putting in print statements in the application. When I first got the copy of the book, I was excited to see that it claims that it was updated for Java SE 9. However, the only coverage of Java SE 9 features I could find were about four pages on modules and two pages on JShell out of an over 740 page book. Java 8 is barely covered for that matter, because the book makes little use of lambda expressions outside of a few event handlers in the Swing and JavaFX chapters, and does not even mention streams until the last half of the next to the last chapter. The book claims it is updated for Java SE 9, so that is the version of Java I installed and tried to use with it. I immediately ran into a problem because NetBeans 8.2 would not run with Java 9. I ended up using an early access daily build of NetBeans 9 to do the exercises. I’m not sure why the author is so committed to NetBeans given its uncertain future now that Oracle is donating NetBeans to the Apache Foundation. I wish the book had an option for IntelliJ community edition because Android Studio is based on it, and it would pave the way for Murach’s Android Programming book.Every edition of Murach’s Java Programming seems to use a different database for its chapter on JDBC, and this one is no exception. Previous editions used Derby or MySQL. This edition uses SQLite which is a very bare bones embedded database. If the author wants to use a simple lightweight embedded database, I would recommend H2Database because it is written in Java and supports all the SQL data types unlike SQLite.Be warned that all Murach electronic books are DRM protected which makes them incompatible with most ebook readers. You have to use a special reader to view the files, and that reader may not be available for your platform. In the past it was LockLizard, but Murach is now using VitalSource. This is a major inconvenience, so I tend to stay with the dead-tree version for Murach books. So if you are willing to overlook the limited coverage of Java 8 and 9 features, and are willing to put up with the inconvenience of DRM or use the dead-tree version, this is a good hands-on introductory book for beginners who are new to Java.
