In 1946, the United States began a series of nuclear tests on Bikini Atoll to determine the impact of atomic bombs on armored naval ships. Amid much fanfare, the military assembled a fleet of surplus ships from World War II, carefully mooring them in the lagoon, and exploded nuclear bombs both in the air and under the water. Delgado, a noted marine archaeologist with the National Park Service, visited Bikini in the late 1980s to explore and document the condition of the sunken ships. His work is more than an archaeological study; it is the history of the nuclear age. Meticulously researched, it chronicles the development of the bomb, its deployment in Japan, the preparations for the tests, the attempted clean-up afterward, and the beginning of the Cold War. Many of the photographs and diagrams were first published by the National Park Service in a study entitled The Archaeology of the Atomic Bomb (1991). My Dad was there (USS Reclaimer) - swimming in the atoll the day after the blasts, cleaning refuged ships, etc. It's amazing he's still alive.Nice photos; good summaries. This isn't a full-blown account of Operation CrossRoads but a nice summary of the ships. If you are interested in OC, this is a good book to have on your shelf.

This is a great mini-coffee table book (get the hardcover if you REALLY dig this stuff!) offering hours of information and photos of the famous atomic bomb tests on naval ships at Bikini Atoll. The 190 page book is broken into nine chapters and has excellent notes on sources. Background information covers the first half of the book while the second is focused on recent dives to many of the famous and lesser known ships that were sunk here. The writing is very informative and the photographs are absolutely haunting, particularly the ones of the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga! Several color photos are included in the center. The author pushes no agenda in this book. He merely reports the facts available both "good and bad".

James Delgado does a very good job of reviewing the sunken ships of Bikini Atoll and telling the story of the 1946 atomic bomb tests. I read this book after diving at Bikini Atoll and found it to be a good treatment of a topic that has received too little attention. As far as wreck diving goes, Bikini Atoll is the best in the world, and my only disappointment with this book is that it does not fill the need for a coffee-table-style photographic survey of the incredible shipwrecks at Bikini. That being said, Delgado's book is a nice compromise between such a coffee table book and the more comprehensive historical treatment in Jonathan Weisgall's superb book on Bikini Atoll.

Having lived in the Marshall islands and dove the wrecks at Bikini I appreciated the history, photos and accounts presented in this book. The author does a great job of research on the ships & the crews, but makes a laughable conclusion that racism was the primary goal when placing the ships in the target area with regards to the German cruiser Priz Eugen and the Captured Japanese vessels which mars this otherwise good historical account.

I found this book to be most interesting, with a very accessible writing style.

Lightroom is a complex application with loads of features, many of which are hidden or aren't intuitive. This book does a really nice job of going through the core application, digging into those magical features, and explaining many use cases and workarounds that may not be obvious to a beginning user. Great job, in the casual and humorous style I've come to enjoy from the author.My one critique is the section on Lightroom CC (nee Mobile). Both the desktop and mobile versions are still evolving rapidly. That led to the CC sections not QUITE matching up with the current versions of the apps. For a book dedicated to Classic CC, (INCOMING PERSONAL OPINION) I feel these could've been dropped or re-tooled to feel like a "here's how to make CC improve your experience in Classic CC" message.

I've read his previous Lightroom books and unfortunately, besides changing his work flow, there is not enough "new" info to make this worth buying. But for me what was really disappointing was the fact that there are glaring typos - doesn't anyone proof anymore? I wouldn't even call them misspellings - just typos but come on! Maybe he's just dashing them off so quickly that they are not vetted but I found this one had more "fluff" than his other books and too much time spent on modules that most users don't bother with.

Scott Kelby's style of writing his instruction books never fails. He is detailed, easy to follow and always entertaining. This is a must have book if you have questions about Lightroom anything from how to get started to wanting to know more advanced features. I find all his books, and this is one is no exception, to be very friendly and you will be on your way to enjoying and learning Lightroom. Lightroom is not an easy program to learn on your own. Thank God for Scott Kelby who makes it a pleasure to learn it.

I read Kelby's earlier edition several years ago and found it very good and helpful. But I really have not been following all the changes/improvements Adobe has been making to Lightroom over the years. This edition on Lightroom CC is introducing me to many of those changes I knew nothing about. And these changes are for the GOOD. Many procedures are much easier now but I never knew anything about them until I started going through this book. Get it!! You will not regret it!!

This is a great book with a good systematic approach to understanding Lightroom which is a rather complicated software program. This enabled me to understand and take advantage of the software's capabilities. Highly recommended.

I first learned Lightroom reading Martin Evening’s 2009 book on Lightroom 2, but thought I should upgrade my manual to reflect improvements over the past nine years so I purchased Scott Kelby’s latest. My impression is that Kelby’s is overly simplistic – it would probably work well for someone that has no Lightroom experience, but anyone with any digital photo manipulation experience would likely find it too elementary. I am still finding myself going back to Martin Evening’s old manual for information. The two books are about the same size, but Kelby’s has an inordinate amount of fluff and an overabundance of photo examples.

Kelby always entertains as he writes. It is so full of helpful information that requires using before you really understand the full impact of what you have in this book. As always it is extremely helpful with a good index. Lightroom has so many hidden gems in the program and Kelby will helps us uncover them.The only helpful thing might be a keyboard shortcut cheat sheet.

Erickson, director of the Center for Community Development Investments at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, is published by the Urban Institute Press, 2009The Housing Policy Revolution is a top-notch analysis and review of affordable housing policy in America over the past 50 years and cogent thoughts for future directions. I own this book.Arising out of Erickson's PhD thesis at Berkeley, this book has inputs ranging from MIT to the Urban Institute and Brookings, and the Federal Reserve. Accordingly Erickson has written a thoughtful and careful book with thorough data and policy views in a comprehensive and readable. I have worked in affordable housing for many years, and learned a lot from Erickson's book.Erickson's general view is that development of affordable housing has generally evolved from directly-built and sponsored to a decentralized housing network including CDCs, state and local government agencies, capacity-building intermediaries, new private sector participants, foundations, churches, and other decentralized entities.There are 6 chapters:1. "Directions in housing policy from Lyndon Johnson to Ronald Reagan, 1963-1986". Chapter 1 discusses housing policy history in two phases: rise and fall of direct federal involvement, and federal cutbacks starting in 1981, with reviews of policies and activities from Lyndon Johnson's Great Society through Ronald Reagan's housing cutbacks.2. "Building the decentralized housing network". Chapter 2 looks in detail at the decentralized housing network, showing how the various components grew in sophistication and capacity over the 1980s.3. "Fighting for federal resources for the decentralized housing network". Chapter 3 discusses how the new network matured and secured more funding, influence and production capacity, building more housing than the Great Society programs did, and growing politically. Erickson discusses the establishment of housing tax credits in 1986 and changes and challenges to the tax credit programs over the next 20 years.4. "Lessons learned from what was built". Chapter 4 discusses examples and case studies of individual low-income apartments built by this decentralized housing network, showing growth of expertise and relationships within the network and enhanced capabilities. Multiple financing programs brought different players into a web of mutual support and supervision, with improving coordination and mutual supervision.5. "The decentralized housing network and the rise of a new institution". Chapter 5 discusses the growth and maturation of this decentralized housing network. Erickson shows, e.g. that by 2005 the number of CDC-built affordable rental units was 848,000; and while in 1969 there were 112 CDCs building affordable housing, by 2005 there were over 4,600.6. "How does thinking like a network change our approach to public policy?" Chapter 6 discusses broader issues and future paths, discussing, e.g. what happens when communities of concentrated poverty lack access to community development networks, and how might new technology enhance network outcomes.Housing Policy Revolution by David J. Erickson provides a deep history of federal housing policy during the 20th century, highlighting the advent of public-private partnerships since the 1970's. This analysis provided a basis for how Seattle area public housing has resulted in mixed use projects that have built commercial & reduced income housing to mix with exclusively low-income. Erickson explains well how private sector and community organizations thrived in absence of direct federal spending, however these "networks" have still been unable to meet the housing needs of America's most needy citizens. In celebrating these public-private partnerships, Erickson also seems to minimize the risk of the sub-prime mortgage market. Overall, a good read to understand modern urban development.

I couldn't agree more with David Hoicka's review. I, too, have been in the affordable housing industry for years (14 now and counting), but only after reading David Erickson's lucid book did a clear picture of housing evolution in this country coalesce for me. From the '60s Great Society to the inchoate CDC network of the '70s, through the Reagan decimation years and subsequent creation of the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program, and finally to the rise, maturation, and sophistication of the "decentralized housing network," Erickson charts the fascinating history of the affordable housing industry, providing invaluable context and inspiring affirmation for the work that we do. Cheers to David Erickson for adding this important volume to the housing policy canon.

i learned of tweigye jackson kaguri from a television program shared by my husband. i immediately searched for information on dr. kaguri and read about the book the prices of stones. i also learned about the grandmothers' project for raising funds for the school. the book is a great study of how individuals can come together to support any cause, especially one of such controversy as hiv/aids. i laughed and i cried throughout reading the price of stones. i recommend for anyone interested in supporting our children and those who unselfishly help our youth. i am a retired educator from the classroom however i continue to share experiences and contribute to the education of our children. i have shared this book with others and will follow dr. kaguri's journey.

I first read about Jackson Kaguri and the Nyaka school for AIDS orphans in an article in Time Magazine. In a world of sad and depressing news, it was so inspiring to read that one person can make a difference and start a movement to help the often forgotten victims of the AIDS epidemic, the orphans left behind. Kaguri speaks from heart breaking experience, having lost both his brother and sister to the disease. He had achieved the "dream" through his love of education. He had gone to school in Africa and came to America to finish his college career. He met the love of his life, they were married and starting to save money for a down payment for their first home. He then became responsible for his nieces and nephews left behind after his siblings' deaths. He then began to think of all the other AIDS orphans left behind who were not always fortunate enough to have someone to care for them. A system of grandmothers who had raised their own children have now watched their grown children die and are raising their grandchildren. At first there were people who told Kaguri not to worry about it, that there was nothing he could do, but slowly there came together another group of people who joined his cause.I read this book in two day's time and have gone on to loan it to a friend. This is the type of book that you will want to share with others.

This world desperately needs more people like the author Mr. Kaguri. This book is about his compassion and his success in raising compassion in others to fund a school for AIDS orphans in Uganda.There are millions of problems in the world that need attention, devotion, understanding,and enduring commitment. What an inspiration to read of Mr. Kaguri's story and those of the children and families that benefited from him and the groups that he recruited for his cause. Unless you have a heart of stone "The Price of Stones" will cause the tears to flow and your compassion to rise. Highly recommended.

This is a remarkedly well written story of a remarkable young man, his life, his dreams, and his accomplishments. It presents a really detailed picture of his home, his family, his raising, the grief of the AIDS epidemic and his long journey to create a school, constantly looking for money and finding helpful people. His ideas are ones that could and should be used in many parts of the world. Along he way working to increase his own education and take care of his family. Excellent and exciting details.

I bought the book for Christmas for my husband because he is from Congo and we are starting our own organization to help orphans and poor rural communities. This is just what we needed for some fresh inspiration while we are living in the US. It is well-written and poignant. I am thoroughly enjoying this book (read half of it in the last two days...I have a toddler so that's quite an accomplishment!). I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the author is a Christian and that his faith was part of what has guided him in his efforts, although anyone (Christian or otherwise) would be able to enjoy and be inspired by this book.

I teach an Academic Literacy class at a Community College. We are using Kaguri's book this semester as the text from which students will write essays on how the Power of One can change the world. This is an amazing story. I have students who NEVER read, come into the class in tears because of the words of Mr. Kaguri. They do not see reading this as a chore, but as a privilege.An amazing story; it has changed the way I look at the world, and education.

This is truly one of the most touching and inspiration books that I have ever read. I simply could not put the book down. Twesigye Jackson Kaguri has shown me the extent of the human heart and how much good and compassion there really is in the world, something that is not often expressed in the media or even daily conversation. He has introduced such a sense of spirituality and inspiration to help not just those disucssed in the book but everyone around you. He has allowed me to find a deeper appreciation for the life I have, how truly blessed I am, and how capable I am to others. I highly recommend this book to everyone, and I hope those who do read it receive as much value as I have. One person CAN make a difference.

This is one of the most moving books I've ever read. The author has shown that one person can make a difference! The education of HIV/AIDS orphans can not only improve their chances to make a success in their lives, but it will also make a difference in the efforts of the country to increase the quality of life of their citizens. Please read and recommend this book to your friends.

This is a wonderful trip down memory lane! As a huge fan of W.I.T.C.H., I was pleasantly surprised to see YenPress re-releasing this Disney Italian comic series to English readers after so many years! Each volume contains four of the original comic issues, summarizing the first saga into three neat re-released volumes! Fans of this series would be delighted. The series followed five girls with magical powers over the elements; Will, Irma, Taranee, Cornelia, and Hay Lin, creating the acronym W.I.T.C.H. The girls discovered they are the Guardians of the Veil, fighting to protect Earth from the evil creatures of Metamoor. At the same time, they must restore the rightful ruler of Metamoor back on the throne. With barely any guidance, the Guardians must learn to work together, control their powers, and who they can and can't trust. This Italian comic series isn't your typical magical-girl genre, but a blend of super-heroes, actions, romance, exciting and sometime dark adventures, with some of the most wonderfully created characters ever to hit the pages! The story is very well told and beautifully illustrated by some of the most talented Italian comic artists.I am very pleased to see that unlike the first English edition previously published by Hyperion, YenPress doesn't censor or alter some parts of the comic's panels, and quotes on the pin-up pages were not omitted. This is how W.I.T.C.H. should have been re-released all along. My only disappointment is the type of paper YenPress chose to print the pages. Unlike most comic books with colored pages, the pages in this volume isn't glossy. Other than this small nickpicking, I am thrilled to see my favorite childhood comic series coming back to life here in North America.Hyperion stopped halfway through the second story arc and the last English issue was officially translated in the Phillipines after the end of the six story arc. I do hope that YenPress will continue to re-release all of W.I.T.C.H.'s comic issues beyond the second story arc so that a new generation of fans can explore the magic and the wonder of this story, while satisfying the older fans.

An excellent title from the creative minds at Disney Italia.These five girls are not the fashion plate cuties with perfect hair who defeat evil in stylish outfits as the guys all swoon over them. Instead they're five ordinary girls with regular clothes who stumble and flail along, trying to make sense of the challenges they face and the new and sometimes troubling powers they posses, although they don't know how to use them.Only one dresses stylishly. There are more baggy jeans on display than miniskirts. And the only girl who could be considered shapely is also on the edge of being pudgy. They have trouble with boys, get in fights over trivial things and generally act like average middle school girls, except for the problems of being Guardians of the Veil, with powers over the elements.The other characters are much the same. Earth people are friends, rivals or bullies, just like normal life. People from the other dimension across the veil are good, evil or indifferent, and loyalties and alliances can shift depending on what the character has learned and where their benefit lies. Old friends can betray you and enemies might ride to the rescue as the battle lines shift.The first story arc is a grand epic, and I've already read it twice and pre-ordered the next two arcs.

This was given as a gift, and well received, as that is what the young lady wanted. She is quite happy with it.

I bought this as a three book set. $44 is worth it, and better than the old ones

Beautiful story about friendship. All the girls are likeable and relatable.
