What makes this book remarkable (and a novel I highly recommend) is that nothing is over-the-top—the language is simple, but evocative, and the bad guys aren’t totally bad and the good folks are also flawed (except maybe the character of Alvin, whom I adore). I immediately remembered what if felt like to be sixteen years old—being both excited by boys yet wary. Right away you want to find out why 16-year-old Carly and her 12-year-old sister, Jen, are on the run. What exactly happened? Hyde doesn’t reveal all until the end, but she tantalizes you with more details about their backstory along the way. You root for them and the ending is totally satisfying and, in my case, tear-inducing (I love it when an ending makes me cry).

The most important take away from this book: respect your elders. A stubborn and proud 16-year old girl puts up a brave front and evades the law so the CPS will not get to her and her sister. Forced to work off a debt, she and her sister had to stay with an equally strong headed 92-year old Native American woman. Life's lessons are indeed difficult to learn, especially when experience is the teacher. No exception...All her works are awesome! Catherine Ryan Hyde uses her gift of writing really well. She's got all the writing factors or ingredients (or whatever writers call it) perfect. Her subject matter and writing style both engage the readers. Most importantly, they impart valuable life lessons. Also, her books are not at all expensive; always, I get more than what I paid for.

When their mother dies, Carley and Jen are orphans and determined not to be put into the Foster System. They begin walking through the Southwest in search of (Teddy) the man who was most like a father to them when they were younger. Their journey leads them across a Native American reservation and they are caught when they steal food. The old woman puts the girls to work in order to pay for their crime, and the three come to a truce of sorts as they spend time together. Carley hasn't lost sight of their original quest, but Jen likes her new home and refuses to continue searching for Teddy. Carley continues on alone and eventually learns a very valuable lesson about life and people.Once again, Catherine Ryan Hyde manages to capture the essence of human nature and how our childhood memories are not always as remember them.

Dumb book. I really wanted to like it but it was the most unrealistic book I've ever read. If this was written for teenagers or something, I didn't know it. It wasn't labeled that way. There is NO WAY this could have ever happened in real life. Those girls would have been picked up so fast & put in a foster home in no time. Walking down the highways in the desert in the summer with no water & no food with them? I hardly think so. No highway patrol people out there patrolling the roads or what? I'm just about done with the book & neither girl has had a change of clothes even once. Shoes changed one time but that's it. The author paid no attention to details & that drives me crazy. All of the adults who met them on this journey just let them continue on? No one called any authorities? Really? Even that tribal police officer let them stay there without reporting it to anyone? He should have been fired! Too unrealistic for me. Not at all believable. I do not recommend this book to anyone.

I have now read about 7 of Catherine Ryan Hyde's novels and they never disappoint. Her characters are vivid and complex. In this one, 16 year old Carly steels away from their unstable home situation in New Mexico during the night with her 11 year old sister, Jen, in tow. We find out that their mother has just died and they have no one to turn to except a would be father figure, Teddy, somewhere in California where they used to live. Having little money and an initial bad experience hitchhiking, Carly pushes them on walking across New Mexico into Arizona. Carly lives in constant fear of an adult discovering they are without parents which will lead to Child Protective Services separating them. With nothing left and them starving, they stumble onto the property of an old woman at the end of a shotgun who says they can either be turned in to the law or work off their debt to her for stealing chicken eggs from her hen house. Here the story diverges as, day by day, Jen finds herself more at home with the local community while Carly feels this is a betrayal of their quest to reach California. The story interrupts at one point to relay their background in California and what caused the sudden departure for New Mexico. Later, it again digresses to describe events leading up to the start of their journey. This is a painful story for Carly as she discovers how the world really is as opposed to working so hard to make it what she thinks it should be. As in Catherine's other stories, there are essential learnings along the way and redemption in the end. If you are looking for a novel that leaves you feeling you have read a story of real people who have grown through their experiences and is satisfying as a complete story, I don't think you can do much better than Catherine Ryan Hyde. Give this one a try.
