The Nag Hammadi Library was discovered in 1945 buried in a large stone jar in the desert outside the modern Egyptian city of Nag Hammadi. It is a collection of religious and philosophic texts gathered and translated into Coptic by fourth-century Gnostic Christians and translated into English by dozens of highly reputable experts. First published in 1978, this is the revised 1988 edition supported by illuminating introductions to each document. The library itself is a diverse collection of texts that the Gnostics considered to be related to their heretical philosophy in some way. There are 45 separate titles, including a Coptic translation from the Greek of two well-known works: the Gospel of Thomas, attributed to Jesus' brother Judas, and Plato's Republic. The word gnosis is defined as "the immediate knowledge of spiritual truth." This doomed radical sect believed in being here now--withdrawing from the contamination of society and materiality--and that heaven is an internal state, not some place above the clouds. For anyone who is sitting on the fence wondering if this is readable for the layperson, worry no more. It is completely readable. I've thus far read the Gospel of Thomas and the Gospel of Paul. They were both very enlightening. I've already read several verses I've heard repeated time and time again that I knew for a fact were not in the KJV bible. Well, here they are. I also purchased a book with just the Gospel of Thomas years ago and it was very difficult to read. This one is not at all difficult.I had waffled between this version of the Nag Hammadi and the one edited by Meyer. I'm so glad I got this version. Maybe next year I'll get Meyer's version but when I heard how severely it was edited and abridged, I wanted to read it unabridged first. So glad I did.

This is a difficult book for certain. I acquired it in the mid 90s and have read it from time to time. But here is the secret to understanding these writings: One must diligently study the Scriptures. All of it. not just the NT, but ALL of it. And not just light reading. DEEP study. I won't comment on the writings of those who were not disciples of Jesus. But those that were authored by Thomas, John, Philip, etc. Are worthy of reading and studying. Especially the Secret Book of John. But to do it properly, the first time reading must be done as casual with no expectations at all.Then go back and read the Bible. Then pray before reading these Gnostic books again. It is the back and forth between Scripture and the Gnostics that works. This of course takes time which most people don't have but it is the only way to fully understand these writings and the words of Jesus Himself.I'd also like to add that a comment from another mentioned needing a teacher first. The Bible itself and the blessing of wisdom, discernment and understanding as the gifts of the Holy Spirit, along with the a sincerely tenacious heart to seek out these things will teach along the way. Not all of us can know someone who is well versed in these writings and if we do, would they have the time to spend with us? God made a way and Jesus told us that He would send the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. There--- is your Teacher.

This revision is the definitive version of the Nag Hammadi Library. Irrespective of other reviews, this version, which I acquired in the late 1990s, correctly refers to such works as the supremely important Trimorphic Protennoia accordingly. The new editors decided to mish-mash the works and refer to this extremely important treatise as "The Three Forms of First Thought." I believe they even rid the Apocryphon of John of one of its most key terms: Epinoia. Do yourself a favor and avoid the newer edition. Even if Robinson's version costs a bit more, it's well worth every cent.

This remarkable collection of Coptic "Christian Gnostic" texts, remarkably discovered in southern Egypt, mesmerizes. This book is not the latest critical edition but it is readily accessible and utterly fascinating. Anyone interested even marginally in early Christianity will find the collection spellbinding.

Excellent shape, unbeatable price. A comprehensive translation of the Nag Hammadi gospels, without any of the usual "opinions" or "expert ideas on meaning" that occompany many of my other books. This book is just a thorough translation, letting the reader decide for themselves the meaning just like any other religious text. For anyone who is curious in studying any and all Theological texts, a must read.

I've had this book for some years. I've enjoyed it.I recently saw that a newer collection has come out. This older NHL came out in 1988/90, and perhaps it was as definitive as definitive gets back then, but when I saw that Marvin Meyer has editted "The Nag Hammadi Scriptures, The International Version" published in 2007, I decided to check it out.I prefer Meyer's volume. I believe it shows that progress has been made in translating and interpreting these texts in the nearly 20 years between the dates of publication of these two books.The texts in the Meyer volume are easier to read and understand. The Gospel of Judas is included. (It was still rotting away on the black market when this Robinson volume was published.) There are copious footnotes explaining translation issues and adding information on interpretation. The introductory essays are more informative. And it's a nice hardbound volume, on decent paper, with really nice layout of the texts.The Nag Hammadi writings are not the easiest to get inside of. The newer volume makes it much easier to read and understand them.

This book is a wonderful historical account of wisdom and enlightenment that anyone who is interested in receiving the wisdom from sixteen centuries ago will find as a most amazing read. Dan Kennedy is probably the greatest marketer period and one of the best copywriters. I’ve listened to many of his courses, but this is the first time I’ve read one of his books cover to cover and he definitely didn’t disappoint. I almost thought that because he has such high priced programs, there’s no way he would give value in a $10-$20 book, but it’s worth a 100x what i paid for it. Anyone that has a business or sells anything needs to read this book.

The book is all about practicality. I believe the strongest advise he has is to make swipe files. I created a sales letter from just the instructions but did not look at what others have done and it flopped. So, copy what works. Do not reinvent the wheel. He says the process is less creative and more formulaic. I would say stick to exactly what he says.

Love this book!! get it and get to work on your business copywriting....learn what realy matters in your business; it is not "being" a good "technician, or getting better at the services that you provide, or the operations that you run...it is bout learning the psychology of the people that you sell to and what attracts them!! THis book has helped my in my learning of sales copy, but more importantly it gets into the core principles of marketing. Great great and very helpful.

While some information in this book is a bit dated and it was primarily focused on direct marketing, Dan Kennedy also shares timeless principles of writing sales letters that can be applied even today no matter what kind of sales letters you are writing.Getting to know your target audience will never become outdated, and the suggestions he shares from his past experience are quite thorough. He mentions that in order to get into the mind of his readers, in this instance dentists, he'd read every industry publication every month, visit websites that host discussions forums for dentists, subscribe to email groups where only dentists communicate back and forth, attend industry functions, conventions, seminars, trade shows, he'd play prospect, and routine mastermind with dentists.He then shares a step-by-step process he used to write a copy, very detailed with various examples. He shares a fill-in-the-blank headlines with examples, different ways to attract attention and to overcome barriers, how to re-write and then he offers an extensive check-list with 35 points to check your copy.Yes he does have a plug for his website and services which I find appropriate in this book, and he also has a plug for few other tools like mike Capuzzi's CopyDoodles.He then suggests re-writing for passion, and editing for clarity, and how to test your copy.At the end of the book you'll find additional resources.

Since pretty much anybody who is anybody in sales and marketing learned from Dan Kennedy, and since Dan Kennedy himself never stops learning and improving, it's fair to say that this is a guys whose every word is well worth hanging on.I've just started reading this book as I have a number of his other books to get through also, and right from the start he has over-delivered with an offer of a free 12-week sales letter writing email course. He then dives straight to the "meat" with 10 crucial questions to help home in on the exact angle that will get your mail opened and read.This book is a comprehensive "how to" manual, written entertainingly and in a way that really gets the lessons across and helps you to implement at the same time.

Yep, Dan is an information marketer, i.e. he wants to sell you the information he has compiled on selling information or becoming a direct marketer. There is no doubt that he is good at it. There is no doubt he can help the people and business that want to sell more. This is a great source for compiling a great, effective profit generating sales letter. Which, as far as I can remember, is actually better.The thing is you have to get past the fact that the book is a sales letter. So to those who would say this is not a good book because it gives his websites every few pages - Get Over It! The fact of the matter is that Dan Kennedy is a Direct Marketer / Information Marketer. This book is great illustration of how he he is successful at it. Read it, takes notes, write down your own thoughts and learn. As far as references to websites that are selling you high priced advice and information, look and learn. Besides this book has a light touch compared to his and other Direct Marketers. In this book he actually references a good deal of sites, books and information that is not his. He isn't profiting off of all of it.He starts with an excellent set of excersizes that help the writer: Identify the Customer,Identify the Real MarketIdentify What Their Best Interests are, etc.Then he guides you through the art of crafting your message in the subsequent chapters. I have used these approaches since I first read them 15 years ago and forgot where I had learned them until re-reading this edition.This is one of the better sales letter books and one of the best Dan Kennedy books. If you take it for what it is and what it's cover promises, it is a great book. persuasion

This text does cover the basics of starting the voyage into FL Studio. I discovered after this arrived that the cost through Amazon is 20% more that through the publisher's site. I'm sure that some might think that the better text would be FL Studio Bible published via Image-Line through Lulu. However, it is more of a detailed technical user manual, whereas this is laid out as a introductory tutorial. It would be great is someone would combine the tutorial aspects of this type of text with using Image-Line effects and accompanying products (e.g., Harmor, Harmless, Reverb, Newtone, etc.,) to create a handful of different musical compositions, including mixing and mastering those songs to completion. That would be awesome! Maybe I should start, huh?!

If you have FL Studio, you need to get this book. It has everything here, well thought out and easy to access.

This book is a keep. I hope I will never loose or damage this book. It taught me a lot!!!!

There is much debate over FL Studio tutorials. If you want to great book to explain what you "think" you already know, then this is it.

Okay, but needs to be updated for FL Studio 12.

OK...This is *not* a "cookbook". A "cookbook" generally assumes that the user has the basic "cooking skills" under their belt and demonstrates how to create tasty new dishes using those skills and the ingredients at hand. Refer to any number of O'Reilly Press 'cookbooks' on various topics (e.g., PhP Cookbook, Raspberry Pi Cookbook, etc.) to understand the difference in content and context of this book and a true 'cookbook'. Rather, this book is an introduction to FL Studio. In fact, it should be retitled as such. As an intro book, its good. In fact, I wish I'd had this book when I started using FL Studio. It would have cut a year off my learning curve (unfortunately, music production is only a weekend hobby due to my 'real life' profession. So, if you're looking for a solid intro to FL Studio, this book is a solid starting place. I can't recommend this to anyone with moderate experience or higher.BOTTOM LINE: Not a cookbook. Should be titled "FL Studio 101" . Solid start block for the FL Studio newbie. Not much content for anyone using FL Studio for more than a few months.

This book has so much Knowledge I wish it had follow up editions! FL Studio can be intimidating to people who are not that familiar with the software. This is the reason for me purchasing this book! I will go back through it to really get a better understanding. Thanks for a great book

***If you don't already know the story--then this review contains the basic plot spoilers. Also, as of November 22, one of Rebecca's brothers has made some mildly inflammatory comments about this book in a short ebook. Short story--it's sensationalism without any substance over minor details and reads like that of a jealous family member angry at the way he was portrayed. Don't bother purchasing it (for anyone interested--I wrote a detailed review of it)***First things first. This book is not an attack against Mormons, God or even polygamy. And neither is this review. It makes clear distinctions about why the type of FLDS that Warren Jeffs was leading was in fact very different from both Mormonism as well as other forms of Christianity. If I recall--not once does Rebecca even use the word cult--but for the purposes of this review, I am going to. In my opinion, whether it's under the guise of religion or helter skelter--when you have a population of people who are both terrified of as well as essentially worship a singular leader, cut off from the rest of the world, indoctrinated from birth, driving out all those who dare to question, and most importantly creating a system of that greatly disadvantages and mentally stunts a portion of the population so that they are easier to control--that is in fact a cult.I rarely read books like these (although I did greatly enjoy the Susan Atkins' autobiography), but every once in a while I come across a news story that just captures my imagination. I remember seeing news articles when Jeffs was arrested where there was just a lot of controversy about whether or not Jeffs and his congregation of FLDS members were just misunderstood or whether they were in fact criminals. Eventually, during his trial--more evidence came to light that Jeffs was in fact a serial pedophile and abuser not to mention was a total con artist concerning his "religion". Jeffs would preach about abstaining from "worldly sins" but then would use the substantial tithe money to live the very type of life that he preached against. Enough tales of 12 year old brides, rape and systemic corruption emerged that I think eventually the media finally came around to the side of the prosecutors--but some still made the case that Jeffs and his members should have just been left alone.I dare anyone who thinks that to read this book. It's clear that even the prison terms that Jeffs and several high ranking members received was only just the tip of the iceberg. This book is positively heartbreaking. Told through the eyes of Rebecca Musser, this books gives a gripping perspective into the tragedy of the Warren Jeffs era FLDS.Rebecca starts with her traumatic childhood of her siblings and mother forced to live in a dark basement and abused by her father's first wife. The physical and emotional trauma she received in this house was in no way merely a form of physical discipline. This was not spanking a child carefully--this was full on bloody beatings from the first wife to the point of organ failure in the case of one of her beloved brothers, sexual molestation from a half brother, and grievous mental and emotional abuse. Rebecca makes it clear though, that at least in her mind---she viewed this as unusual and not the norm for all polygamous families. She makes it clear that child abuse is not a necessary byproduct of bigamy--though she did see reoccurring jealousy leading to violence or passive forms of aggression repeatedly in in first/second/third/etc... wife relationships.Something that was surprising to me though, was the realization that the FLDS movement was much more like the Amish than cult like towards the beginning of the book. While I would disagree with many if not all of their views, the FLDS church was not always synonymous with human trafficking and child rape. It seems it used to have a more democratic (though barely) structure not to mention didn't seek to wholly cut off their children from the outside world. Rebecca even attended a normal school up until somewhere in elementary I believe. Unlike many in the church, her father was a highly educated engineer who clearly passed on his mental acuity and passion for knowledge to Rebecca. It seems things honestly didn't reach the point of outright major law breaking (for the greater organization--certainly Rebecca and her siblings would have all been taken away and her parents put in jail if authorities were aware of the child abuse) until maybe the late 90s early 00s.What changed things was Warren Jeffs. He had taken over the "school" system and little by little chipped away at whatever real knowledge these kids had and replaced it with a systematic indoctrination of both the church, himself, "sexual purity"/total submission of women and how evil the rest of the "Gentile" world was. When his father (the revered yet lecherous Prophet who Rebecca was married off to at 19 and he 85) became sick, he took over the main religious not to mention purse strings of the cult. When his father died, Jeffs began a systematic purge of all those who opposed him as well as rewarding young and younger girls as wives to those who backed his rise to power. When Jeffs started to pressure the sister wives of his father--specifically Rebecca--into marrying him, this was the moment when Rebecca found the courage to escape the compound as she was absolutely sickened and terrified of Jeffs.In the time Rebecca left and the time Jeffs was finally arrested--it's clear that things just got worse. Just because these young brides weren't chained physically, they might as well have been. When you have virtually zero education, poor communication skills and own zero property to your name, you really don't have a choice. It's either leave (provided you aren't dragged back like many girls were) or marry. Neither of which is a fair choice. And many boys were also either raped or sent off to work in almost chain gain like conditions for various construction FLDS owned companies if they showed the slightest sign of mere hesitation or rebellion.As she became increasingly aware of just how great some of the lies told to her were, not to mention broken over the unknown fates of her biological younger sisters--she began a relentless yet cautious effort to locate her littlest sisters who she was concerned had been forced into marriage. Eventually, as the federal and state governments began to make a case against Jeffs and senior members of the church--they called upon Rebecca to help them. At great emotional and psychological harm to herself and her marriage, Rebecca slowly started helping the authorities build a case against these members. Eventually, she became the star and fearless witness in a series of trials which eventually ended up in prison sentences for Jeffs and other members. She symbolically wore red during her testimony in Jeffs trial, a moment of defiance as Jeffs had banned the color red from ever being worn in the FLDS church.While emotionally difficult to read, I do want to make it clear that this book was incredibly riveting. I knew the ending, I knew Rebecca had survived, I knew Jeffs was arrested and sentenced to life--and yet this was genuinely more tense and gripping than several thrillers I've read recently. All credit to Rebecca as well as Bridget Cook (co-author) for masterful storytelling.Part of what made this book so powerful to me is that it's not a rant. It's not a pity party. It's not even about how heroic Rebecca was--which she unquestionably was. It's clear the journey Rebecca went through was gradual and that she often felt hopelessly alone and not in control. And yet, with each little decision she made--she got one step closer and closer to not just freedom for herself but many of her siblings and others. Her steely determination and self respect is what saved her. And that's an incredibly empowering message.I would highly recommend this book to anyone simply curious about the history and insight into the world of the Jeffs era FLDS, as well as young girls. One of the many powerful ideas from this book that has really stuck with me--is that Rebecca didn't know she had the choice to respect herself. She had been taught that she was nothing except a body in which to sexually and otherwise serve the whims of the men in charge. And it was the moment that she realized that she was special that she was able to start questioning what she saw around her.Emotional, visceral, enlightening and riveting--this book can help you see the world a little bit clearer. Highly recommend.*********Promised myself I wasn't going to write any more--but ended up buying and reading the book by Rebecca's little sister Elissa who had been married off at 14 to a first cousin and repeatedly raped. I don't want to take anything away from her story--but the perspective here is wholly different. Elissa was a kid and relaid her story through the eyes of a kid--and tho Rebecca wasn't much older, she had much more knowledge and an awareness of what was actually happening due to her status as the elder Prophet's wife. Honestly, Rebecca is also simply a much better writer. Essentially, this book is much more detailed and provides a better perspective of the entire FLDS situation.

You expect this highly dysfunctional, uber-patriarchal society to collapse under the weight of its own hypocrisy at any time, but it never does.The Witness Wore Red shines an unflattering spotlight on Rulon Jeffs, the FLDS "prophet," and his conniving, evil son, Warren, who would ascend to the throne upon Rulon’s death. Despite an age gap of over 60 years, Musser became the 19th “wife” of the senior (very senior) Jeffs. As Ms. Musser assimilates, there are re-occurring tensions between her and her new husband – he wants Rebecca to be the dutiful, “keep sweet” wife and mother; she wants to sell real estate and assist government authorities in Texas attempting to dismantle a FLDS compound.For additional insights into the FLDS culture, readers may wish to consult Jon Krakauer’s excellent work on Mormon fundamentalism, Under the Banner of Heaven. Krakauer’s book provides a historical perspective that Musser’s book lacks. Other FLDS works include Escape, co-authored by Carolyn Jessop, and Stolen Innocence, co-authored by Elissa Wall (Musser’s biological sister). These books are inspiring in a perverse sort of way, especially to those of us who face daily challenges a lot less daunting than the ones tackled head-on by ex-FLDS members. They highlight an underrated trait in 21st century America: resiliency.

Good and useful in general, but It has a long way to become a good code at least from structural point of view. As one may expect, IEBC has a Format similar to IBC. Buy it if you need a source for contract and legal terms. Not very useful if you are looking for something similar to ASCE 41 or FEMA publications.

Maryland has adopted this code as a part of its "Smart (Existing Building) Code" which dictates all types of construction work on existing buildings over one year old. It's a "must have" for architects wanting to help their clients to safely improve their buildings as inexpensively as legally possible.

My baby brother is very ill, he is 34 and needs a new liver, through no fault of his own. I converted to Judaism many years ago but my family is very Christian. I have been finding it difficult to maintain my relationship with God in light of the absolute misery my brother has gone through over the past 4 years since his initial cancer diagnosis. It suddenly came to me. The title of this book. I decided to order it on kindle. I read it all straight through in about 3 hours. I recommend it to anyone suffering in any way who still wants God in their life. I don't feel totally at peace with the possibility of my brother's death, but i do feel less alone in my pain. I also felt a nudge to be a better sister with the time my brother has left. I have been sort of ignoring the situation, his pain, my family's pain, and my pain. That isn't the best way to go. Anyway. We all struggle with life and this books helps the struggle. Buy it if you can.

I purchased this book just a few weeks ago. It sat on my nightstand for awhile because I was so angry about the current struggles my family is facing and I thought to myself “how can a silly book really help me?”. In a moment of dispair I decided to finally start reading this book. Two words: life changing. I’ve struggling with the hand that my family has been dealt and it has made me angry and resentful. This book doesn’t solve your problems, but what it does do is open you to an entirely new mindset that allows you feel, be gentle to yourself, and find the courage and strength to move forward. Read it, highlight it, reference it often.

A really poignant book and one that has helped me out several times over the years when I have encountered a rough patch in my life. I have since read a few other books by Rabbi Kushner, but this is the one I return to for its wisdom. I am not Jewish, but good advice and sympathetic experience are universal. This book has that in spades.

I feel like I have very little to add to the other 811 reviews, so I am writing this more as a Thank You to Rabbi Kushner, not that he'll ever see this.I first read this book in college. It was mandatory reading in one of my psychology classes. At the time, I noted that the book was well written and offered sage advice regarding a topic few write about.The book took on even more meaning later in life however, when my wife was diagnosed with a very rare and aggressive cancer. She passed away 9 months after being diagnosed. I return to this book often, each time mining for something I missed upon previous readings. Each time I am consoled.I truly recommend this book for anyone going through a difficult time with a loved one's illness. And as a healthcare provider working with sick children, I also recommend this book to anyone who deals with suffering patients and families. It will add to your humanity and by doing so, allow you to help others on a deeper and more meaningful level.

This book is recommended for the position it takes and the explanations that most miss. We need more who understand that God created all systems that exist on earth and almost never interferes with the outcome that results from the choices we make. I think anyone wanting a better understanding of who our God (Creator) is and how He interacts with us - will enjoy this book.

I think this book would be suited best for someone deeply rooted in religion and it's dogma. If your beliefs are different or are elevated it will not help you find solace. It basically is only telling you that when bad things happen to good people it is not gods punishment.If you already know that don't buy this book it is a waste of money and time.

I had read this book many years ago, however with some recent events in my life I decided to re-read and the book took on new meaning. Rabbi Kushner addresses the topic of good people encountering unfortunate circumstances through the Biblical book of Job. A good read when your life seems to be spiraling in a direction you can't understand. Well worth re-reading as the waves of time deposit you on different beaches, some of which are not easy to comprehend.

A very thought provoking book. I have been struggling with why an all powerful God is good when all the bad things are allowed to happen. This book has suggested that many beliefs people (including myself) are taught and have about God may be limiting and not correct. Another perspective is presented that helps me understand that God can be good and why. Although we will never have the answers to all of our questions here on earth. this book was very comforting in helping me reconcile a lot of anger that has been directed towards God.
