I'd heard of Mark Yarnell, but always as the "guy who wrote the book on network marketing". This fascinating book tells the other side of the story. Anyone who has been in marketing (network, online, or traditional) for any length of time knows the various platitudes that are exhorted as ways to connect with potential customers and make sales. But what does it mean to really LIVE those values? More importantly, what does it mean to be a member of the household having to live with someone who is living those values? Those were the elements of the book that elevated it to a five-star experience for me.And, of course, there's actual meat here, as well. The seven core decisions have the hallmarks of true wisdom. They are incredibly simple, and not at all easy. After only a few days, I haven't reached the point of being able to decide YES to all of them every day, but I'm certainly deciding to CONSIDER them each day, which is already a great improvement. After all, we cannot change what we do not recognize.Thank you, Amy Yarnell Carter for writing this book, and giving us a glimpse, not only of your father's legacy, but of his humanity.

About the Author

Dougal Dixon was born in Scotland and later graduated from The University of St Andrews with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1970 and a Master of Science degree in 1972. He began his career as a geological consultant for a publishing company in 1973, nurturing a special interest in fossils and evolution. He is now a full-time writer specializing in earth sciences and has written many children's books and encylopedia with a special interest in dinosaurs. He has made several television appearances and acted as a consultant and animator for a video programme about dinosaurs. As a practical geologist he took part in the 1995 Open University/Earthwatch expedition to Askja Caldera in central Iceland. In 1987 he was involved in excavating a dinosaur-rich site in Jurassic rocks at Durlston on the Dorset coast. Dougal was presented with the Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Educational Journalism by The Educational Press Association of America in 1993, the Helen Roney Sattler Award in 1993, The Children's Book Council 1994 Outstanding Trade Science Book Award, and The Times Educational Supplement Primary Schoolbook Award in 1996. In the same year he was appointed as a trustee of the Dinosaur Society, UK.

If you're looking for a fairly comprehensive book describing many dinosaur species, this is a good choice. I would recommend this mostly to those who are just beginning to have an interest in paleontology, or those who want a refresher or easy reference book. There's plenty of good stuff in this book, but there are also some not so good.Let's start with what's good! This book doesn't get overly technical or weighed down by scientific jargon, so it's easy to pick up and read at any time. When a scientific or anatomical term is presented, it's always given a definition, and there's a small glossary in the back if you need a reminder. There's a nice, but short, introduction section at the beginning that briefly covers some basics on evolution and how the species in the book are related to one another. It also describes how fossils are formed and some examples of prehistoric landscapes. My favorite bits in the introduction are the full spread illustrations that clearly mark the flora and fauna.The encyclopedia section of the book (which is the majority of what you're getting here!) features species starting with the Devonian period. Each animal has a short description describing it's distinguishing features, where it has been found, etc. This is great for a quick look-up of a species to get some basic info. Each entry has it's own illustration.The illustrations in the book are mostly very nice, but they do have some inaccuracies. Primarily, most suffer from "shrink-wrapping", a popular trend in paleoart that gives the animals a 'skin and bones' appearance- this is most notable on the heads. The theropods (traditionally, the bipedal carnivorous dinosaurs) are frequently illustrated with "bunny wrists", when we now know that their palms would have been facing each other.There are quite a few grammatical errors in the book, including a mix-up of words in one sentence that got a laugh out of me: "It has been accepted for some time that *dinosaurs* evolved from *birds*." Of course, dinosaurs and birds should be swapped there. Generally, though, the text is pretty good. Keep in mind that the author is from Scotland, so some of the "british english" spellings of words may seem odd to Americans reading it. For example, maneuver vs. manoeuvre.The most recent dinosaur finds are not included in this book, so don't expect to find entries on Yi Qi, Wendiceratops, or the updated quadrupedal stance of Spinosaurus. A sentence at the very beginning of the book describes this best, "New discoveries are being made so quickly, that before this book is on the bookshelves there will have been an overwhelming number of new finds and developments in the understanding of the subject." In light of this, it would behoove the reader to do a bit more research on any given species they're introduced to in this book, if they're interested in learning more.All in all, it's a nice book if you're looking for some basic facts, or like the encyclopedia layout of it. Kids will probably enjoy the illustrations, but may not be interested in the text; this isn't a wow-factor book for very small children. If they're really passionate and interested in prehistoric life, then I'd say go for it, otherwise this might be more suitable for early teens and up.As a side note, the size of the book is much more compact than I thought it would be; I've included a photo with a coke can for scale, for those who ignored the dimensions in the description, like me, haha. My copy arrived somewhat dinged up, on the back cover particularly, though Amazon is usually pretty good with their packaging- since it's a somewhat heavy book, I might suggest having it gift wrapped when sent to you, to avoid it getting smashed up corners.

This book contains so many facts and examples in both graphic and text that it pretty much out-paces most others out there.That it's published date is a little old now means nothing. One question for other owners perhaps - does this book come in any other edition that I don't see? The text is really small for my mature eyes, and would dearly love to have something larger. I fully realize this format necessarily keeps the volume much handier, but sure would love to have more legible text.

I bought this for my 8 year old daughter she had been asking my for it for a while. she loves dinosaurs and has all sorts of dino books but she wanted one what had them all together in one book for her to take with her when we go places. she loves all the pictures and uses it as a reference so she can draw her own dinosaurs. This is a great quality book its very sturdy and well put together. its easy for kids to find what they are looking for and it has great information about each and every dinosaur ex. where they come from, how dig they are, its features, ect. there is over 500 pages of great information and pictures of every dinosaur and prehistoric creature that it talks about.

Love the illustrations in this book. Love the little fact sheets for every animal in there. Classic natural science illustrated book that I loved as a kid, and am loving this up-to-date version more than 5 stars can express.

Heck yes! Perfect for my little cousin and all the dino toys I am getting him. He is only 3.5 and hunts them down and tries to learn how to say their names and asks 100 questions about them. Amazing and vibrant learning tool!

Gift for someone. They started to use it. It has only been a few days so I cannot give an accurate review. It was for a young child who is reading at the first or second grade level. Plenty of area for improvement. The pages tear easily and we have to fix several of them with minor tears.

This is a really good book. There are four monsters for each family and pictures for them as well. Also, each family of creature has an overview. I really liked finding more than just dinosaurs in this book because the mammals are hard to get information on. The only minor thing is there is no good way to tell the size of each animal since there is no size illustration. There is text, however. For the price this is a great read. It is not over-scientific either. I was very happy to find my favorite animals as well as more.Very good large book.

My son is 12 and loves to learn about dinosaurs. He bought this with his own money and has really enjoyed reading it. He is consistently asking me trivia type questions about what he's learned. I'm impressed with the quality of the book as well as the content.

My granddaughter requested a book with beautiful illustrations for Beauty and the Beast, a favorite Disney video of hers. I read other reviews about the illustrations in this book. They were all very true. This is a beautifully illustrated book and the text follows the original French version. Mayer and Mayer have created a wonderful rendition of a favorite fairy tale. Buy it, you'll like it.

This is my favorite fairy tale, and I've looked high and low through every library I've ever lived near to see what editions they had, always looking for a new rendition to delight (or dissapoint) my mind and eyes. This is THE best I've ever found. It is a pity that Mercer Mayer has not done more fairy tales. His talent is immense. The actual story-telling is simple, with only slight variations to the original tale that to not take away from it's main moral. (Those looking for a non-illustrated "best" Should read "Beauty" or "Rose Daughter" by Robin McKinley)

I absolutely loved this book growing up. Saw it on Amazon and purchased it. The story and pictures are still the best, but only one star for the condition of the book. Ripped pages through out and hardcover was in bad shape. I was super bummed by the wear and tear.

I have always loved fairy tales and Mercer is one of my favorite illustrators. Although probably more well known for his other children book series, I loved his fairy tale illustrations instead. Unusually, the designs in this story have an Egyptian flavor which somehow works. The picture of beauty sitting on the window ledge is my favorite.

Had hardback version, gave paperback to daughter who is not quite so picky as me.

It is a great book but it came missing pages, although it was labeled as in "good" condition.

Always my favorite fairy-tale myth, I wanted this for my collection mostly for the beauty of the illustrations. It is a gorgeous book, no longer in print. The used library-bound copy was in excellent condition, as promised, and arrived promptly. I am very pleased.

Love it! In time pages were decent. Story with a twist! Love love it!!
