Well written, has a ton of information, but so much of it is not useful to me at all. Most things that are said I already know even as common sense. It is a good read, but not really worth buying it to let it sit now. I could get a list of those things online to go back and review. Needs more wording and a reference to an online list to read and not just to fill out the pages.

This book recommends an oddly chosen hodgepodge of jobs that are not especially well suited to mid-life career changers. You might as well open any book on careers and put your finger down at random. The suggestions ranged from lower-level jobs that you don't need a book to tell you about (office cleaner, home health care aide, retail -- and I'm not sure I'd call these great for those who are older and less able to stand for long periods or do heavy lifting) to those with a high barrier of entry, such as a Ph.D. (seriously?). The ones that fall under the actual category of "great jobs" are pretty much those that require master's degrees and Ph.D.s. How many people over 50, in this economy, have the motivation and money to go back to graduate school to retrain for a completely different career field that they then may not be able to break into thanks to their age? Also, the difficulty of breaking into some of these careers is underestimated or misleading, such as suggesting that "no formal training" is needed to work as a copyeditor, writer, or editor. Good luck trying to compete with scores of experienced writers who have been downsized from newspapers, magazines, and other media and are scrambling to find work in an oversaturated field. (No, I'm not one of them.) BUT, if you are completely at sea and looking for job suggestions, some of the listed jobs may trigger some ideas.The more general job advice in the second half of the book is likewise a mixed bag. It ranges from the demeaning/condescending ("keep your hand out of the [retirement account] cookie jar") and blatantly obvious (eat healthy) to the genuinely useful (the chapter on non-profit work). There is enough of potential use in this section, depending on how clued-in you are about job-hunting, that I gave this book three stars instead of two.I'd suggest getting this one from the library and skimming it to see what parts might be useful for you.

As previous reviewers have posted, this mostly has low minimum wage paying jobs and the book was of very little value--much better resources out there. I find it interesting as well that some people post reviews when they have not read the book yet. Therefore, I don't go necessarily on the number of stars a product has but actual reviews of people who have used/read the product. This set of reviews kind of fooled me--as the reviews mostly were good when I found the book of very little value. Appreciate the ease at which you can return a book/product.

School bus driver? Volunteer worker without pay until the hire you? This book was a total waste of money. Maybe the dummies book would have been a lot better. I should have ordered it or anything besides this garbage.

On the strength of the authoring company, AARP, I had some great expectations for this book and therefore bought it to read on my summer vacation at the lake. It was mostly a waste of time and money. The "great" in the title is my basic issue with this book, as many of the jobs it describes hardly rise to that level. IIRC, some of these wonderful opportunities include: Walmart Greeter; Rural Paper Delivery; Barista; and various volunteer opportunities such as Meals-on-Wheels. Maybe it is just me but virtually all of the jobs included in this book had already occurred to me (I'm a working professional, 57 years old in 2014) and I had a general sense of the nature of work out there. Nothing really new here for me, and none of the listings broke new ground for me either.

Interesting read. However a book wont/doesnt influence a manager to give a senior a chance over a younger, pretty face. No matter the experience.

This book offers ideas that are both traditional and non-traditional for those seeking to make the change. I liked the part-time section most as an option to stay engaged without sacrificing flexibility.

Nothing new here. Disappointed.

I'm a big fan of the Waldo Rabbit series of fantasy novels. I'm also someone who has made a decent living publishing novels about supervillains. So, when Nelson Chereta decided to do a book about the God Emperor of Rhode Island, I was sold from the beginning. Still, there have been a lot of books about supervillains. There's the D-List Supervillain series, the Supervillainy Saga (which is the best), and the original Soon I Will Be Invincible. Could Nelson Chereta really add something new to it all? Well, the answer is yes. If there's a few jokes which have already done before then they're outnumbered by the easy good humor throughout. The premise is Doctor Anarchy is a top-tier supervillain but exists in the penumbra between A-list and B-List. He's got his own island stronghold, an army of killbots, and regularly steals millions from the Cartels without consequence. Unfortunately, he's not the nemesis of his archenemy in the Dark Detective. As a running joke in the book goes, Doctor Anarchy isn't the Dark Detective's nemesis, Whiteface is. Doctor Anarchy is closer to being the Scarecrow or Elektro versus the Joker or Doctor Octopus. Not that he's willing to acknowledge it. One day, while walking the beach on his island lair, Doctor Anarchy finds a ninja who has been left to die after having her limbs cut off. Rebuilding her stronger, faster, and more deadly--Doctor Anarchy finds himself with a lieutenant (she prefers sidekick) called Raven. This results in him getting a perky female villain who pretty much regularly trash talks him as he tries to explain why he does the things he does. Honestly, the Doctor Anarchy/Raven relationship doesn't quite work the same way the Waldo Rabbit one does. In the Waldo Rabbit series, the protagonist's love interest has reason to call our antihero out because he's woefully ignorant about life outside of his Mordor-esque homeworld. Instead, Raven is constantly calling out Doctor Anarchy for acting like a supervillain...in a world which operates by superhero and supervillain rules. As such, instead of coming off as the only sane woman or even Scott Evil, she kind of just comes off as ignorant. For example, at one point she freaks out for the fact he's stealing from the Cartels and he just calmly points out he's done it before when you'd think anyone living in a supervillain world (particularly one where a Doctor Doom EXPY has taken over the planet) would think of them as small potatoes. It doesn't endear Raven to the reader even if she does redeem herself by the end. Nelson Chereta makes a point that Doctor Anarchy isn't a misunderstood good guy and there's several moments he does actually evil things, albeit he does a nice job of making them so over the top you lose your sense of horror and it becomes funny. He kills the local equivalent of James Bond by accident (which you'd think he'd want to advertise given his lack of respect) and also regularly murders his "henchmen" even when they don't want to be henchmen. Despite this, I was entertained by the book throughout. The humor is crisp, the parody fun, and there's a bunch of really good moments throughout. I also liked the climax with the alien invasion as we finally have the Dark Detective tell Doctor Anarchy what he REALLY thinks of him. Honestly, Doctor Anarchy and he should team up more often as the DD is pretty awesome. Fans of superheroes are, of course, the people who will get the most out of this but I think the comedy is broad enough to entertain just about everyone. I also love the fact he managed to deconstruct quite a few tropes like world conquest by science god as well as the interpersonal relationships of villains. Strangely, my favorite scene in the book may just be Doctor Anarchy showing up at a civilian wedding in costume. That was awesome. One small warning in that, like the Waldo Rabbit books, this novel is "unconventionally" edited with no indents and spaces between paragraphs. Once I got used to it, it was no problem. Those who are obsessive about grammar, though, will probably set themselves on fire with a disintegration gun.9/10

Another fun book from this author. In a land where superpowers exist the author chose his protagonist to be merely "one of the smartest" people in the world. This was a great choice since this was another character that had to outsmart rather than overpower his enemies - and many times he couldn't outsmart them either. He wasn't a hero or anti-hero, just a guy with a big chip on his shoulder but in the end had just enough self awareness to avoid major disasters. i was disappointed this book came before book 3 of the rabbit series, but in the end it was a pleasant distraction.

I only give 5-star ratings to books that I read more than once. I've read the tale of Dr. Anarchy three times, and it hasn't lost any of its flair despite the fact that I know exactly what's going to happen. The story is filled with clever tricks, a spunky ninja, consistent characters, death rays, and an ending that takes the reader by surprise, which is frankly an impressive achievement given that the ending is right there in the title. If you're interested by the idea of a look into the inner motivations of a professional supervillain, give this a go. You won't be disappointed.

I bought this book partly to support the author but mostly because its just so damn funny. I loved the Waldo Rabbit series and loved this one too. Story is nothing new or original but it does a good job of parodying comic book heroes, batman is the dark detective, and superman is called super soldier. Overall, the book makes enough insightful comments through the character's actions and words that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book is truly funny! The satire is hilarious! The anti-hero and anti-heroine have your typical love story while being very bad people.

OK, I wish this was a series, because I love the two lead characters and their repartee.This was a page turner and simply a pure laugh out loud joy to read.

A massive fan of his Naruto fanfics, as well as the Waldo Rabbit series, I keep close watch on whatever Nelson Chereta writes. I have been working in GIS for more than 17 years. I caught the bug in graduate school, where a brief few weeks in a plenary studio with Dana Tomlin convinced me that this was some interesting stuff about which I wanted to learn a lot more. Learning GIS from Dana Tomlin was quite a privilege. He has a unique teaching style that uses a combination of rich metaphor and creative descriptions of physical scenarios in order to describe complex concepts. It was a formative experience for me, and caused a significant shift in my career toward geospatial analysis.Dana built his academic reputation around the development of Map Algebra, a conceptual framework for processing geographic data that he originally articulated in his doctoral thesis. This work, which he referred to as "Cartographic Modeling" (Map Algebra has since become a more popular moniker) was outlined in a book released in 1990.The book itself was important, but the influence of Dana's work was enhanced by his decision to openly share the source code that demonstrated the concepts as well as a number of elegant algorithms for implementing the computation in efficient ways. As a consequence, Map Algebra concepts and algorithms became part of every commercial and open source GIS platform that supported raster processing.When I first took a class with Dana in 1995, the book was already becoming tough to find, and there are still used copies of the Prentice Hall edition floating around, but it's been out of print for several years. So I was thrilled when I learned that Dana was going to collaborate with Esri Press to re-publish a revised version of the book. This book is the fruits of that collaboration, and I couldn't wait to crack it open.This is not just a republication - it's a significant update on the original book. Unlike many contemporary GIS books, Dana and the editors elected to eschew color illustrations in favor of the original gray-scale approach. However, every illustration and map has been redrawn, and they a wonderful compliment to the text. I think the decision to stick with gray-scale illustrations was a smart one, though I am somewhat less sanguine about the gray-scale maps; many are quite successful, but some of have only a narrow range of b/w values and the resulting lack of contrast causes them to look muddy to my eye.Dana has also retained the original data sets around the "Brown's Pond" site located near his home in western Massachusetts. By using the same site to illustrate the concepts, the chapters have a great deal of continuity, enabling the reader to focus on the material, rather than interpreting the data. The book also retains its focus on teaching and learning; each chapter ends with a series of questions to help the learner apply the material.The book ends with an appendix that describes some of the nuances of the cartographic modeling language. At this point, it is important to note that while Esri Press is publishing the book, it is not tied to Esri's ArcGIS software in any way. While every raster processing software has adopted Dana's overall modeling framework, the terminology has rarely remained intact. Esri's implementations have not been an exception, and the current set of tools in the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension have their own unique nomenclature and categorization system.But Esri has resisted the urge to turn this into a self-serving book that supports their own ArcGIS software platform. Rather, similar to some of the other Esri Press books that focus on foundational concepts in GIS (Semiology of Graphics and The Look of Maps come to mind), the book is aimed at all learners of GIS. Esri deserves a great deal of credit for demonstrating a generosity of spirit that compliment's Tomlin's own commitment to openly sharing his work.So regardless of the GIS platform you use, if you want to learn about spatial modeling, this book is a great place to start.

I had to read this book for a graduate class and struggled to get through it each week. The writing was extremely technical (as to be expected I suppose) and was very dry. I understand it is a very technical topic, but I have read very technical books on GIS that are not this dry. I needed to take breaks after a few paragraphs. The information was beneficial to any GIS professional, but I just feel as though the material could have been presented in a better fashion. More real world examples would have helped to drive home the information this book presented.

This is an excellent book to have in your GIS library, but I would not recommend it as an introduction to GIS.The first chapter is like a data dictionary of GIS term. Each one is defined, along with discussion of the ramifications of various implemations. It really opened my eyes to some considerations I had not thought of.The rest continues in a manner that continues to cover the ramifications of various choices.A great reference, but to dry and slow for a first GIS book.

I had hoped that this book wasabout how four simple young men from Liverpool became one of the greatest musical acts of our age. An inspiration for my young musician daughter. Sorry to say it falls short of that goal. Not recommended for kids!

I wish this series had been around when I was a kid! So far, I have purchased Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss, George Lucas, The Beatles and Walt Disney for my son. These books are a great way for me to introduce the people who have always inspired me, to my own children. I believe that reading about different creative talents throughout history is not only a great way for kids to learn but also a great way to inspire them. We always have great conversations when we discuss the people from these books because we teach each other new things.

This series is great to introduce kids to historic and culturally significant personages. Perfect especially for a Beatles-obsessed third grader! It actually made him interested in reading!

Simple, informative and to the point.

My son loves the Beatles and loved learning more about them. I read aloud to him in first grade bc it was a little lengthy and a bit hard for him. But second graders and up could handle this book easily.

As usual these books are great. My kids learn a lot reading those while me and I know other parents read them too. In this particular case, I learnt a lot about The Beatles.

I bought these for my third grade classroom. They are great for the biography genre and then to use for report writing. The three years I've used them so far the kids LOVED them. Easy for their reading levels, informative, and people they have heard of in their lives. They would read their own and then read other that they had heard of. Could have left these books out 1/2 year and they would have still been reading them.

Brother was happy with the book. He had planned on buying it; but hadn't yet, so it was a nice surprise for him.
