Todd May is a professor of philosophy at Clemson University who has written books on subjects like poststructuralist anarchism. These books are not likely to show up on most people’s bookshelves or Kindles, but this book might and maybe even should.A number of philosophers throughout the ages have developed schools of ethical thought, and in the first chapter May discusses theories like consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics from thinkers like Immanuel Kant, Aristotle, and Peter Singer. The problem with most of these theories, in May’s opinion, is that they set the bar too high or too abstractly, and it would be difficult to live up to their requirements. So A Decent Life doesn’t try to define what it means to lead a “good life” at a level that most people could not attain, such as altruism. Instead it lays out how we might lead a “decent life”, an approach that recognizes our moral limits. It also avoids for the most part casting moral actions in terms of duties or obligations but instead emphasizes conducting ourselves to make other lives and “our often fraught world” a little better off because of our presence.May’s approach to morality has a simple framework, “the idea that decent moral action recognizes that there are others in the world who have lives to live.” The rest of the chapters describe the various aspects of a decent life within that framework. First, there are our relations with the people closest to us, those with whom we have personal contact. Then there are the other people with whom we share our world or who come before or after us in the world. Broadening our recognition of other lives a bit further, another chapter talks about being decent to nonhuman life (even if you are allergic to them, as May is to cats!). The final aspect of the moral life is political, which recognizes that we are all members of some organized society, a political entity. In the concluding chapter, May tells us how we can use the stories we tell about ourselves to help us recognize what our own values are.May’s writing is insightful, often in ways I had not expected. I was struck, for example, by his description of the impact of gazing directly into someone’s face and how it makes us recognize that other person as an entity, a living being. Most of the chapters lay out general frameworks that will fit people in very different environments and with many different values. In the chapter on Politics and Decency, though, he becomes very prescriptive and is likely to alienate if not actually offend many decent people. For example, he says, “In the United States,…we cannot think about our political situation without taking into account the history of racial oppression. To attempt to ask the question of acting in a politically decent manner without reflecting on race would be to miss a central defining aspect of that situation”. He rejects the value system that many non-racist people espouse that prefers more race-blind attitudes. Both of these should be respected as “decent” approaches to political discourse. In addition, his discussion of political action is almost entirely about protest and opposition. He does disapprove of lack of civility in protests or instances when liberal protestors attempt to keep a conservative speaker from appearing on a college campus (or vice versa). However, there is little or no reference to more positive and cooperative paths to political morality, like working in political campaigns, serving on board and commissions, testifying on legislation, or lobbying for programs. The overall message from this chapter is that a decent life politically must agree with the author’s political philosophy, and as a result, many readers may reject what is otherwise an excellent book.If you share Todd May’s commitment to poststructuralist anarchism, this is definitely the book for you. Even if your approach to being decent politically differs from his, if you can ignore your likely reaction to May’s recipe for living a decent life politically, there is a lot to like and a lot to learn in A Decent Life. I've been a consistent reader of all of Jonathan Little's books. What separates him from most other authors is that he teaches readers the "why", not just the "how", in very clear and humble language. His earlier works have focused on general principles-raising ranges, player profiles, post-flop strategy, etc. In all of those and in this work, he excels at encouraging the reader to think through why a certain line might be better than another, and not to take the same lines against every opponent.This book adds to that with some of the best range analysis discussions I've come across in a long time. It takes from game theory and distills it to a level that an advanced beginner or intermediate player would understand, and then recommends adjustments for different player profiles and stack sizes. I would not recommend it for a completely new player, but for someone who's played a few months online or live and can understand what range analysis is actually describing, this book is indispensable. I've found it greatly improving my play, adjusting my value and bluffing frequencies and ranges and thereby increasing my overall profitability. For those poker players who become fixated on perfect pre-flop play, this and previous works by Little force them to connect pre-flop play to post-flop (it certainly has me) and understand why adjustments pre-flop against raising ranges and player profiles allow flexibility in one's ability to play post-flop, which is where many beginners and general amateurs struggle.I recommend taking this book a couple chapters at a time, applying lessons at the table and then re-reading the chapter until the principles are understood.

Fantastic poker book. Jonathan's writing and examples make complex situations easy to understand. He shows how to get the most equity from almost any situation. He discusses the mistakes that most amateurs make in their games, how to take advantage of them, and how to eliminate those mistakes from your game. It is an absolute must read for anyone that plays in small stakes games and wishes to maximize their winnings and/or move up to the middle stakes.

Jonathan, like the book but there are quite a few typos in the tables. For example diagrams 7 and 8 are the exact same chart. Diagram 7 is for >40 bb and table 7 is supposed to be for 12-40 BB. This happens a few more times at least throughout the first 100 pages of the book ie with charts dealing w playing w and w/o antes. Inwould suggest posting the correct tables onnyour website. Otherwise really nice book for beginner/intermediates. Thanks!

As 20+ year accomplished poker player myself, I chose to read this book out of curiosity. The author is definitely a superb player, but there is a limit to math in poker and this book is mostly all about the math and difficult percentages. Pot odds are very important, but so is manipulation and just having an ability to sense and "know." Way too many charts on the wrong pages, that reference other pages. Mostly, the feeling I got from this book is that the author wants to lead you to his website. There is certainly some good advice in this book that I agree with and I cannot say I disagree with much in this book as it is very accurate, but it is very, very boring. Its like a boring textbook that needs to be edited a few more times in my opinion.

This is a great book for learning to think about ranges and applying that to your betting actions. Jonathan has done a good job presenting all the common betting scenarios and how to take advantage of mistakes small stakes players make. He covers deep stack, medium stack and short stack play in each scenario. This is more a text book on poker play, the type of book you come back to over and over until you master the material. Having now read through the book, now I need to go back and thoroughly study it.

This is a great book. I have read the "Secrets of no limit holdem" books and been waiting for a rewrite (because poker keeps changing), or a book like like this - as a poker review for me - but as a great book for people who haven't read many other books yet.One thing I liked is that Jonathan took time in several places to discuss how to play against the "maniacs". We do run into people like this, and the general advice in the past has been to wait until you have the nuts and then take them down. In this book Jonathan explains for many, many different situations how to play against both tight and loose opponents and also often includes how to play against the maniacs.This book shows lots of ranges for your own play, and lots of ranges for what to expect your opponents to have. Everyone advises that thinking about ranges of hands, rather than just specific hands, is very important, but few books take the time to actually explain and visualize these ranges. By the use of charts for ranges we are better able to visualize them.This book covers many, many situations and I find the repetition of the same good advice for various situations to be helpful.The book is long, and you probably won't read it at one sitting, but it is worth the effort. And the organization makes it easy to return to sections you want to review.

Remember when c-betting was a revelation and everyone was doing it? Well this book takes your poker learning to the next level with range analysis - ranges are the rage right now and Mr. Little does not hold back when it comes to deciphering the correct play pre and post flop. Takes a little bit to get in to and you'll need to memorize range charts to implement but overall a good "next level" text.

I just started reading this book, it's generally fine but I found one thing super annoying: errors in range diagram!! When the book is talking about two different ranges when at different positions, it put the same figure there!! This is super confusing since the text doesn't tell you much more about actual range, you have to solely rely on diagram, but they are wrong...

The other reviewers have done a great job describing the book. I won't duplicate that here. Instead, I will just say that I have shelves (!) of books dedicated to New Orleans, and this book is my favorite. Debra, hope you will treat us to another book in the near future.

This book captures the wonder of New Orleans and it is a beautiful coffee table book. Great photography and I look forward to visiting the city again soon.

Josh does a great job of laying out a strategy for attracting clients rather than chasing them. He makes it easy to understand and easy to follow. By laying out the steps in a simple stages he creates a powerful sequence that walks users step by step through the process, showing and explaining the how and why's of what he's doing. Not only does he show people what to do, he also tells you what not to do if you are wanting to attract clients, instead of chasing them. I'd recommend Attract to any real estate agent that is looking for ways to work with their ideal clients and stop chasing every lead all over the internet and beyond. If you want to take your business up a notch or two and simplify your life read this book and implement the ideas starting the minute you finish it.

Got my attention the first half of the book because I agree with old traditional way of lead generating is painful and degrading. So I was totally excited to see that I was not the only one that felt that way. But I was a little bit disappointed with the solution that this book provided to resolve the issue of cold calling and door knocking. I think their solution is a little unrealistic especially for new agents that need to make a living sooner than later. I still think I can apply some of the tactics that the book teaches even as I continue to make calls.

It is obviously setting you up to subscribe to Josh's service but even if you don't, it has a ton of great stuff. It lays out what you need to do to be successful with social media. It's not a quick shortcut to success either. He says it will be work but it will definitely pay off if you want to be the kind of respected, honest, and successful agent that you know you should be.

There is a BETTER way, and in this book Josh outlines the exact step by step system you can follow to finally break free. Here's why you should read it: 1. This is the same exact process Josh has been teaching since I started working alongside him nearly 10 years ago, and it continues to produce consistent, reliable results. 2. If you're tired of the old school marketing methods that just leave you frustrated and ready to quit then this will be a very refreshing read. 3. The stories and examples that Josh shares alone are worth the read as he has quite the success story that will motivate and inspire you. I HIGHLY recommend it!

The strategies in this book make a ton of sense for selling real estate in the world we live in today. This is a book I wish I would've had when I was beginning in the industry! It isn't about "selling" and tricking people into calling you... it's about building real relationships with people, in new ways through new technologies/platforms, in a way that earns people's trust and eventually their business. Great stuff!!

I was a fan of the O'Reilly cookbooks after the very positive experience with Paul Teetor's R Cookbook and Winston Chang's R Graphics Cookbook. This iOS 11 Swift Programming Cookbook has a very different content philosophy, which renders it virtually useless. Regret buying this book. There are many more useful books and online resources for Swift, including free ones from Apple and iTunes U, so you can pass up on this one.

This book lists a bunch of extremely superficial projects compiled over 3 - 4 weekends maybe with little to no in-depth discussion of any of the technologies touched. Its main bulk - and this is a very slim volume - consists of IDE screenshots. Each topic follows the same script with of couple of simplistic usage scenarios that typically don't even fill an entire page, many screenshots, some code excerpts (and there isn't a lot of code here) and that's that. Your average amateur online tutorial has ten times the amount of depth and consideration. Avoid at all cost - total scam.

I think it was in Donald Knuth’s “The Art of Computer Programming” where I first came across the admonition that the best way to learn to write good code is to study well-written code. Computer reference manuals teach you the grammar of the language, but they don’t teach you how to write elegant, efficient, readable, code. That’s true whether you’re writing System/360 Assembler, as I was when I first encountered that statement, or in Swift or any other contemporary environment. The question is,where do you find good code to study?For a long time, and for a lot of us, the answer has been the O’Reilly cookbooks. Many years ago I was advised that the then-new Perl language was ideal for the university “campus wide information system” project I was managing. Studying the Perl reference guides only helped write Perl that looked like C, which wasn’t very good Perl. It was only after I found the Perl Cookbook that I learned to write Perl that looked like Perl, using Perl-specific concepts like implied I/O that made my code more efficient and easier to maintain. Not surprisingly, whenever I’ve had to learn a new language since then (Java, Ruby, etc.) my first step has been to look to see if there’s an O’Reilly cookbook, and there usually is. They’re long on practical examples and short on the kindness of fluff that fill some the pages of so many programming books- endless screen shots, repetition, and so on.This book, the iOS Swift/Xcode book, differs a lot from most of the O’Reilly cookbooks I’ve used in the past in that it’s aimed not at Swift novices, but at programmers who already have a good deal of experience in the Swift environment and need to learn how to take advantage of the new features in iOS 11 and the latest Apple hardware. I’m a newcomer to iOS programming, so the book is currently a bit too advanced for me; I’m going to order O’Reilly’s “iOS 11 Programming Fundamentals” or something similar to get up to speed. But I f you’re already familiar with Swift and Xcode, this is probably a book you need on your shelf.

I dig this book. As a studio ceramicist for roughly 12 years, I love making glazes, and experimenting. Yet, I haver yet to find my results matching up with the images in the recipe/photo examples. Perhaps more info given as per what exactly was don't to achieve the glaze results would be more realistic. Spraying-vs-dipping. High/low reduction -vs- light or heavy oxidation. And image examples of both/all results would help too. Either way, it is a great book but not for a beginner who has no background firing or chemistry knowledge. I scribble notes all over mine like a cookbook, and in the same way, I just use it as a springboard to create my own stuff.

A stellar book that explains the properties of elements and oxides in glazes, the firing methods, heat work, and testing glazes by line blends. Glazes are categorized by color as well as sections on special effect, iron, and salt glazes. There are many, many recipes and options here along with brief discussions about the characteristics of various glazes (shinos, tenmokus, celadons, etcetera). There are many excellent quality photos of test tiles and some nice pieces as well. I believe it is the most informative book on high fire glazes in existence. It's also a pleasure to read, indexed, and formatted well. An all around stellar glaze book!

I love these recipes! John Britt is a great resource for pottery. His glaze recipes are always reliable and you know you're getting a quality, tried and true recipe. There's little to worry about when trying on of his glazes for the first time. Aside from the recipes in this book, Britt offers up a ton of knowledge on the subject of high fire ceramics. I recommend this book to every potter interested in high fire. It's simply one of my favorite books to have on hand in the studio. The photos really help to give you an idea of what to expect as well which is very helpful when trying something for a first time.

Absolutely, the best book on pottery glazes that I've seen. John Britt has established himself has the "God of Glaze." His book is very easy to read and can be picked up anywhere at anytime. He gives great explanations of glazes, variations, tile examples, glossaries, definitions, tips and more. You can find excellent tutorials on YouTube to give you an example of his approach to glaze making.

If you want to make your own glazes and to understand the chemistry and craft behind successful glazes, this is a great book. Good explanations and useful detailed photos that show what the glaze will do in specific atmospheres (mostly reduction but some in oxidation).

This is a brilliant book with great technical information and fabulous pictures. Most importantly for me though is getting good glaze recipes that have materials that are easily found or can be adapted to what I have. I have trialled many recipes in this book and have found good success. John Britt writes well and gives good firing information. Also most helpful is where he shows the same glaze used on different types of clay, this is a critical factor in the success of any glaze so a most important point that needs to be shown.If you are wanting to learn about glazing, then this book is a must for you. If you follow through each section and test as many of the glazes as possible, and follow the different firing methods, you will at the end have a comprehensive understanding of glazes and firing.

Very well written although it does not have extensive discussion on topics I'm researching, one of which is metallic copper glaze for cone 10.

Good book on glazes and glazing. Pretty comprehensive for what it is. My pottery teacher agreed that the author is highly regarded.

I loved this book! I have to admit the first few pages made me a little nervous. I had heard wonderful things about the book and I was afraid it was going to be less than spectacular and just a lot of quotes of different philosophers. Boy, was I wrong and thrilled as I got into the book and realized how much good there was in it! It took a second of patience and I was rewarded with a lifetime of rewards!

This is an excellent presentation of mostly long forgotten Christian leaders from the past who have supported ideas that are now apparently only found in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon). These equally long forgotten beliefs are today considered far out or ridiculous, once had a life long before Mormonism was founded.This book explains it in such beautiful and mostly easy to understand prose that it will make the Mormons smile and those not affiliated almost consider conversion.

The Givens' are amazing. I had the privilege of hearing them speak once, but their names didn't stick with me at the time. I ordered this book based on reviews and found inside many of the points they had made in their amazing presentation. I was quickly convinced they were one and the same and went to look and voila! They were! This book is incredible. Their marvelous way of articulating thoughts is an artform. And, by the way, if there is a version out there with Fiona reading it, you should definitely download it as her accent is rich and beautiful and makes you feel smarter for having heard it. ;)

In lovely writing, Givens weaves together Mormon scripture with well chosen world literature from great minds who have written on the nature of God and His relationship to we humans, his children. With these, Givens make well reasoned restatements of Mormon theology and doctrine for the Mormon faithful and others who want to understand peculiar Mormon beliefs. I have recommended this book to Mormons and those not of the Mormon faith.

It is interesting that many Mormon teachings and doctrines that have been criticized, and that are not part of the creeds have actually been taught by by many other scholars and spiritual persons. Joseph Smith just seemed to be able to organize these teachings into a comprehensive whole.

The basic treatise is that doubt and agency are necessary to develop God's attributes. For example, God feels sorrow and so must we to have genuine compassion. We fulfill our life's purpose as we emulate and strive to understand God.
