This was required reading for a career prep class. It did have some valuable information about forging a career in the art world. However, a lot of self-help writing could have been edited out, as well as obsolete tech and stories of the author's personal life.

Battenfield writes honestly and from her own life experience. And her experience is well-worth sharing!!! I relate to this book so much b/c I am a wife and mother as well as a committed artist. Any woman who is these things or any man who is married to a woman who is these things will understand this statement: Responding to the call of these three things is very difficult to do well! Not only did I gain LOTS of practical insight from this book, I felt moral support come thru the pages to say, "It is possible to love your family and be an artist." This book should be required reading for all mother-artists.

The subtitle, "How to make a living doing what you love", is accurate.Jackie Battenfield has done that herself, and has been teaching many of us about the kinds of persistence, creativity, energy, and focus that we need to develop cash flow around our art.Wish I could say that I've taken all of her advice -- but I've certainly taken it to heart! And as this book gets well used by my bedside, I'll expect that my web site ([..]) will be more inviting, my grant applications stronger, and my outreach to galleries and other sales channels more direct and more frequent.Enough said. Had to buy for one of my art classes but I did enjoy reading it.

Really well written book. My teacher uses it in his professional practice as reference, yet it still caters to those of us who are still working on becoming known artists working in the field.

Jackie is a gifted artist and writer. She has years of gallery, grant writing, along with valueable artist Insights that will help you launch or furture your career to new heights. I plan to take a seminar from her within the next three years to help my passion for art to also become full time and get paid well for my art. You will learn a great deal from this gifted artist!

The book is thorough, and the author's style is engaging and informative.My one possibly negative comment is that I would have liked to see more about how the author integrated her creative work with the business of being an art business woman, but that's a minor criticism; it may have been the author's intent to avoid the issue of creativity.I would definitely recommend it for young artists and graduating students of art.

This is a great book. Full of tons of information for an up and coming artist.

I was very disappointed to find out that I had purchased I REVIEW of a book I wanted to read, and not the book itself. I guess buyer beware should be the motto here. I had previously bought a an autobiography of Lucille Ball, only to find that it was merely someone with the same name riding her biography and not the legendary redhead. Why would I want to read an autobiography of someone else. I need to make sure I investigate more thoroughly before purchasing something.

Well, I feel the fool, too. Downloaded what I thought was the novel, "All the Light We Cannot See" to read on my vacation. Got all settled in and opened up my Kindle to find that I'd downloaded a book which is, in fact, "A REVIEW." How disappointing. Yes, it's my bad for not carefully scrutinizing what I was ordering, but when I type in the exact title of the book and this is the first thing that comes up, I'm expecting it to be THE book. Does anyone know if "exchanges" are possible with digital downloads? I can't find a way to contact Amazon.BTW, many of the reviews on this page are clearly for the original novel; not Salrich's review.

This is the biggest rip-off of a book for $13 I have EVER (mistakenly) bought. In haste, I made the mistake of buying this, thinking it was the actual novel. The warning now attached is helpful, but too late for me. The errors in grammar and spelling were horrifying. I don't know a thing about J.T. Salrich, but he/she does not deserve to be published. It was a good review of the book, but reading it and connecting it to Doerr's novel was insulting.

The book, purported to be a review of the novel, is pretentious, filled with spelling and grammatical errors as well as content errors. I'll admit I purchased it by mistake - clicked on this instead of the original book, but even free it is a mistake to get it.

I thought that I was purchasing the actual book. The title when I purchased was very misleading. After reading the book, I tried to read through this but there are too many errors. This review is poorly written, with grammatical mistakes and more importantly, mistakes in key information. I feel completely ripped off.

The grammar and punctuation in this book was terrible. Some sentences didn't even make sense. I did get the gist of the story, although what I wanted was the novel. The way that this book cover was presented made it look like it was the novel with a review by this author included. I learned a valuable lesson in buying books.

Contrary to my colleagues in a faux book club , I was entirely enthusiastic, but after finishing and thinking, I had to say I my resistance was overcome about the time the French Resistance enter Stage Left.

This was merely a book review which I ordered by mistake. I meant to order the book itself. As a book review it's not very good. There are lots of misspellings and grammatical errors.

I'm a little bummed out on this book. I thought to myself when I first saw it listed - "Hey, finally here's a book that goes over the Beaglebone Black." (There aren't many books sad to say). I look in the sample, and see that the author chose Ubuntu over the Angstrom distro (which I cant stand), so I think cool. After working through the getting python up and running, I see the author go over Vision and Audio - over USB, and I go uh-oh. I scan through the rest of the book, and see nothing but USB sensors and devices.NOT ONE FREAKING BLURB ON USING ALL THAT GPIO HARDWARE ON THE BBB.The main excuse is - not wanting the user to damage his board. Duh. Why would I buy this board if I didn't want the hardware? I could have bought another RPi if I wanted that. There a lot easier to set up and use than the BBB.For all I know, the GPIO isn't even functional on the BBB with Ubuntu. Didn't see one iota of proof of it.Another complaint is the level of detail. An author of a book like this shouldn't gloss over detail on getting specific functionality - that is why you bought the book in the first place. With this book, your going to do a lot of googling to get the specifics. Not crazy about that.Other than those grouching points - I would still buy this book, since there are just so few - I just wish the title had been "Beaglebone Black USB Robotic Projects". That would have nailed it on the head, and I would have been aware of what I was getting.I was pretty much snookered on this one.Now you won't be :)

For people who learn by doing,this book will definitely hit the mark. The subject matter is presented through incremental builds of robotics projects, and delivers good value with lots of interesting and stimulating projects. I am definitely happy to own it, and the material gave me at least one or two missions after my current build.Having said that, this book misses out on the deeper elements of the beaglebone. The projects are heavy on integrating usb peripherals, and definitely target more rudimentary features of the beaglebone. I would have liked to see a little more around the GPIO pins, memory mapping to improve performance, and general expansion on the more technical aspects of the beaglebone.This book has plenty of positives going for it though, and I think it is a solid addition to the bookshelf. It was worth the money to me, and I would purchase it again in hindsight. I am still waiting for the brilliant technical reference to the beaglebone, but this book did a very nice job of walking readers through the possibilities of really neat experiments including vision, speech recognition, and autonomous behaviors. Would have gotten the 5th star if it took a dive into more geeky elements of the board.

Actually, it is not too far from where I am with Linux as well.The book title suggests that it is for those who have an interest in robotics. I didn't have any interest in robotics when I started, but I do now. I just ordered a Sparkfun 2 wheeled robot platform and a couple of Pololu motor controllers with the intend of building a few of the projects that i didn't have the parts for.The Beaglebone Black can be frustrating - an Arduino clone it is not. But, it is a complete Linux 1Ghz computer with a lot of I/O. The default Angstrom distribution is not as close to being as stable as the Debian Wheezy distruibution supplied with the Raspberry Pi. (As of the time of this review the BBB is likely to get a default Debian distribution very soon.) Mr. Grimmett overcomes this by having you load an Ubuntu distribution on a sd card and boot from it instead. I knew the BBB could do lots of things but never really had any luck with some of the online tutorials that I tried. Because of the book I got my USB camera to work, showing video via OpenCV. With one of those cheapie USB sound cards and a Logitech headset I was able to record and play sounds via the ALSA library. I even tried a little speech recognition. This book is very good at showcasing the BBB's built in capabilities and actually getting them to work. If you are really interested, Mr. Grimmett will also show you how you can operate your Beaglebone Black by land, by air or by sea(above and beneath).The book covers programming with Python but is by no means a tutorial on the subject. That statement is pretty much true for robotics as well. Most of the robotics are made of simple to use USB type controllers for motors and servos and other sensors. Simple to use doesn't mean cheap! There is no doubt other ways of skinning this cat but I believe the author would have caused himself no end of grief by trying to describe a cheaper, more "solder it yourself" type of construction. To be honest, I had no idea you could build a robot by plugging in a bunch of controllers into a powered USB hub.So, should you buy this book? Well, if you're an "informed beginner", by all means. I found it a lot of fun - not only getting my Beaglebone Black to do something but giving me more much needed confidence with Linux. I am also looking forward to the day my robot parts arrive. There is a lot to get from this book.

What Fed My Addiction:King Arthur!I love all things Camelot, so the concept of this book had me hooked right from the start. Kids can get a little lesson on these epic characters in a fun format! (This makes me want to reread A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.) The story gives us a lot of the original Arthurian legends and then puts them in a spin cycle.Video games.Sophie and Stu love RPG-style video games, and I could see how this one would be lots of fun. They also sounded like realistic kids—I’ve had some of these same arguments with my teenagers over the value of video games vs. “real life” and their arguments mirror Sophie and Stu’s pretty nicely. (I was glad that there was a balance between the idea that video games can be a worthwhile hobby, but it might be nice to get out and do other things sometimes too.)Multiple POVs.Sometimes too many POVs can be overwhelming, but I thought it really worked in this book. We got to see both the past and the present through multiple characters’ eyes this way. We had POVs from Sophie, Stu, Arthur and Guenivere.High Stakes.Because of the time travel aspect of the book, the fate of the whole world is at stake. Sophie and Stu worry that any changes made to the past might wipe out the whole future!What Left Me Hungry for More:Some unrealistic points.And, no, I’m not talking about the time travel. Don’t worry, I’m not one of those crazy people who reads a fantasy and says it’s not realistic. But there were other little “real world” plot points that had me scratching my head a little. (For instance, a football scene that didn’t make a lot of logical sense.) These were little things, though, and I’m guessing middle graders might not even notice them.This book has a little bit of something for every middle grade reader: video game geekiness, sports enthusiasm, historical villains, magic, mayhem and a hint of romance. What will it take to kill Mr. Z? What will happen next? You'll have to read it to find out!I'm a big fan of Angel and he never disappoints his readers! If you like lots of action, including zombies and other mutated species - this is the book for you!

I love this book. Angel is a very talented writer and can't wait to read the second book from this series. I will be recommending it to all my friends who, like me, love resident evil and all things zombie. 😃😃😃😃😃😃

Great book, great guy, great time

The Fifth Survivor: Episode 1 is my first exposure to the gamelit genre. However, since I enjoy zombie books, this was a great segueway to the genre for me. The story follows George Fisher as he is is trying to find out what the Hybrid Corporation is up to, how they are involved the Woodhull Hospital, and what the “Raven Hawk” virus is.George is in the hospital when the Hybrid Corporation releases the virus and is attempting to escape from the zombies. While trying to escape he encounters animals that have been infected with the virus and have transformed into mutated beings of themselves. In his escapade to escape the hospital he encounters game power-ups to assist him.I felt that the story needed to have more showing to it than telling. It was hard to get in to the story, because the story needed to have more description to it. The second person point-of-view was difficult to read. I felt there were areas that needed more explanation and definition and other areas, such as the announcements and letters, that could have been cut down or eliminated.The story was also full of grammatical errors and some repetition of words. However, overall there is a good storyline and with some re-working could be very excellent. George is a likable character and is intent on his purpose. Even with the even with some of the inconsistencies, the story leaves you wanting to find out more about the “Raven Hawk” virus and the zombies.I received and advanced reader copy and am providing a review of my own free will.

The Fifth Survivor: Episode 1 is my first exposure to the gamelit genre. This is exciting new territory as a reader. Ramon does an excellent job formatting the narrative to showcase different text elements found in games. Details relevant to the reader (or player) such as leveling up skills are displayed in bold. Interactive written elements such as notes, letters, and journal entries are featured in italics and I appreciated that some, while not relevant to the main story, added texture and richness to the world. The present verb tense took a little bit to get used to but captured the action and agency of playing a game. I am intrigued by the idea that Ramon could explore writing a second person point of view novel in his zombie world to give the reader even more agency. Ramon is skilled at writing action sequences however he oftentimes failed to provide physical descriptions of the area the action was taking place beyond some structural damage or the type of room it was. Objects in the room were not described until they were interacted with, which caused me to reread sections to make sure I knew what room I was in. For the most part, Ramon does a good job of showing instead of telling. There were two instances during dialogue that instead of continuing the dialogue and providing world building and details in the responses characters gave, Ramon chose to summarize in exposition. I felt that the interview would have been helpful to see the types of questions George asks and look at the way Anthony Clark answered them. There is some room for improvement as there were some issues with continuity. There was a contradiction with the oversized tank zombie. In some scenes you could hear or feel the vibrations of his footsteps, his imposing size and demeanor kept him from moving quietly. But in other scenes he would pop out of nowhere, completely silent. The release of the experiment occurred on that day at the hospital and within a few hours George finds patients who have flatlined due to lack of care and expired food and flat soda in a break room. Those are things that would have taken more time to occur. The novel would have been stronger with some research outside of video games. Announcements made in the novel were long and provided unnecessary details, and the announcement made at the hospital began with calling a Code Red. Code Red is standard in US hospitals for fire. Along the lines of fire, the hospital was not designed for fire code as doors that exited into stairwells and emergency exits were locked preventing exit (which was irksome given the long announcement ordered everyone to evacuate through the nearest emergency exit). Basic crime scene protocol knowledge would have improved George’s interaction with police. He was able to walk away without being required to provide any information while being possibly the last person to see a murder victim alive. George also unjams his magnum revolver by slamming it against the wall or floor which isn't an effective way to fix a jam on a gun, let alone a gun that rarely jams. These incidents of needing more world knowledge didn’t affect the flow of the narrative too much, just brief hiccups where I was reminded that’s not how it works. The first half of the book is very quick to get into the action. George is very much a do-things-by-the-seat-of-his-pants character and he keeps the plot moving forward. By the second half of the novel I began to notice frequent typos and redundant words and phrases. It was as if editors and proofreaders had started editing the novel and stopped finding errors once they got pulled into the story.If you can excuse some grammatical issues, the novel will pull you in with Ramon’s command of action and fighting. George is a believable and quirky character and his objectives are compelling. Gamelit is an exciting genre to read and experience. Ramon has the story crafting and potential to be next greatest zombie craze.

Awesome book! Very different from other Author​'s that's for sure. Sadly to say I haven't read any book's by Angel before this one and I even own 3 books by him haven't read them yet.We follow George trying to build story against big company and the hospital and follow leads. All at the same time fighting his way out of infested hospital of zombies and weird creatures that are infection too!!!. I love how the author does the story telling in video game action it was amazing!! Can't wait to read more!!!!

This was such a great book to be an ARC reader for. Such a unique and fun take on the apocalypse. I am not a huge gamer, but reading this makes me want to start. The characters are amazing and well thought out. This was a great and fun easy read and can’t wait for the next one to come out. Sometimes it was difficult to match the content level with his advanced reading level in addition to his interest in the content itself, however these books have seemed to be a perfect storm of sorts. He is 9 but reading at a 12th grade level and it wasn't until this series that we really saw a passion for reading show, he always liked it and did it daily but never sought it out as feverishly as he did with this series, he is sharing the story with us in addition to laughing and enjoying himself. I highly recommend them and we now own them all.

The Hostile Hospital yet again brings some great suspense and interesting circumstances that teach the reader new things in a fun way. The end is definitely one of the most cliffhangers yet.

Maybe the best book so far in the series. We finally received a little extra needed information. Olaf is even more cruel. And Esme, well you know...recommend you purchase book 9 before you read the last chapter so ur not waiting so see what happens next with you know who. STOP. Also, actress Eva Green (from Dark Shadows w johnny depp) would be marvelous as Esme Squalor for the Netflix version of this series.

My son liked this with the hospital having so pretty random wards but he agrees not much happened and it was more of a build up. It wasn't our favorite.

Violet has got taken from Klaus and Sunny, and was about to get a nasky surgery.The way Klaus and Sunny prevent Olaf from starting the surgery was astonishing!At the hospital the siblings finds some important information about the Snicket file, which has a name from the book's author.I can't help flipping the page quickly to discover what stories this file covers.

like all these books it's hard to put this one down. I bought the heard cover to complete my collection but I have to re-read it to tell you more about the plot. I do however remember finishing this one and weighting with anticipation for the next one.

I enjoyed the "A Series of Unfortunate Events" immensely!!! And you do not have to be a kid to read these books! I actually stumbled across this author... My mother was in the hospital & someone had given me some old books, so being bored I started reading the 2nd book of this series. I enjoyed it so much, I went on Amazon and bought & downloaded the other 11 books!!! I'm giving them 5 stars!!! Enjoy :)

Once again the hapless trio find themselves in another miserable situation this time at a half completed hospital. As Lemony Snicket climbs closer to the goal of thirteen books in this miserable and hilarious series, the action becomes much more fast and furious with this particular book ending with a cliff hanger. More clues are being dropped about their parents fateful day,the mysterious V.F.D. and Jaques Snicket who came to an unfortunate end in the last tale of woe. Each outing gets better and better, and if you've read the others you'll surely want to snatch this one up!
