Erasmus and Luther: The Battle over Free Will (Hackett Classics)

Review

Among the most dramatic exchanges in Western intellectual history was the confrontation between Erasmus and Luther over freedom of the will--or, as Luther conceived of it, bound choice. Clarence H. Miller provides extensive selections from both sides of this vital debate--from Erasmus' A Discussion or Discourse concerning Free Will; from Luther's reply, The Enslaved Will; and from Erasmus' extensive rebuttal, The Shield-Bearer Defending 'A Discussion'--outfitting them with helpful notes that bring readers into the world of the texts. James D. Tracy's Introduction masterfully and concisely depicts the two participants in this literary disputation, the concerns that governed their thinking, and the intellectual context of their debate—one that still offers much to readers reflecting on what it means to be human in our own age. --Robert A. Kolb, Missions Professor of Systematic Theology Emeritus, Concordia SeminaryErasmus has the first and last word in this version of the famous debate on free will. He needs all the help he can get, given that Luther captivates the readers with his scathing wit, pristine deductive logic, and pithy if dismissive rejoinders. . . . This volume of substantial excerpts translated by Clarence H. Miller and Peter Macardle . . . provides Reformation scholars with the most comprehensive existing treatment of the exchange between Erasmus and Luther on the Reformation exegesis, philosophy, and politics of free will, grace, and Law. The comprehensive and detailed biographical and theological introduction concisely covers the cultural history and the central doctrinal issues informing the debate, most notably the Pauline influences." --Alice Crawford Berghof, English, UC Irvine (adapted from Comitatus)As James D. Tracy notes in the excellent introduction to Clarence H. Miller's Erasmus and Luther: The Battle over Free Will, 'In the history of the European Reformation, few issues were as important as the one debated by Erasmus and Luther: Are human beings capable of contributing to their own salvation by what they choose to do or not to do?' Miller's edition provides a more comprehensive view of the debate than the usual English texts used in classrooms and accurately reflects the history of the debate. Miller and Macardle's translation is clear and flows well. Compared to Winter’s text, this edition offers a stronger supportive apparatus, including helpful notes and an updated bibliography. Erasmus' and Luther's debate over the freedom of the will remains a central point of access to the study of the Reformation. It highlights the fundamental issues of the Reformation as well as the differences between those eager for reform within the Church and those who believed that the Church was so fundamentally off track that no reform could sufficiently set it right. Luther's vehemence and self-assurance in The Enslaved Will say almost as much about his reform movement as his arguments do. Erasmus' three efforts to defend the freedom of the will demonstrate not only his nuanced approach to theology, Scripture, and Church tradition, but also his concern for the consequences of Church schism." --Greta Grace Kroeker, History, University of Waterloo (condensed from Erasmus of Rotterdam Society Yearbook)

Most publications of the correspondence of Erasmus and Luther over the question of Free Will only include Erasmus' first letter and Luther's reply. The fact that Erasmus made a defense of his first letter often goes unnoticed. This book rectifies the problem. Erasmus explains why, though he does have an opinion on the issue, he does not speak forcefully in his first letter, but rather tries to be conciliatory. He then takes time to respond to each of Luther's criticisms. It is unfortunate that Luther was so vitriolic and insulting in his tone. Later he tried to regain Erasmus' friendship, but to no avail. The book received five stars despite the fact that it still does not have the full correspondence between Erasmus and Luther, rather, selections of each of their letters (along with an outline of the entire work). This is because, for the price, you cannot get a fuller English text of the conversation and the book would have had to have been probably twice as long as its already almost 400 pages. Nonetheless, for those who want the entire conversation, they will have to look at the complete works of Luther and Erasmus. The book was definitely worth the money and the time I put into it.

I enjoyed reading this. The kindle rendition is fine with no discrepancies that I could find. I now believe that all publications that combine Erasmus's Discussion with Luther's Bondage of the Will but leave off Erasmus's rebuttal should be banned or burned. Without the rebuttal you don't all get a sense of what Erasmus believes and you will tend to think Luther has conquered. The rebuttal is the longest section of the book but also the best. I would encourage anyone who likes Bondage of the Will BUT ALSO likes to weigh opinions and interpretations and attempt to understand ancient church opinions (without canonizing them) to read this book. I believe Erasmus does a good job of taking Luther down off his pedestal a bit. (Note I am not a Catholic nor a Lutheran ... nor a Calvinist as far as that goes) Though I was raised to believe Luther was a great man; the more I read his actual works - like his commentary on Galatians - the more I wonder if he wasn't a little mentally imbalanced. No offense meant to my Lutheran friends. :)

Although this book is far longer than it needs to be, it gives great insight into the thinking of these great minds at the forefront of the Reformation. I was shocked when exposed to the shallow, easily refuted nature of Luther's arguments against free will. I love the spirit of Erasmus and his impartial search for truth, fearing not which side of a question he lands on. Erasmus seems much more in line with the spirit of Christ, love, and the Holy Ghost.

The editors have done a fantastic job with Erasmus' and Luther's debates. The footnotes they supply are very helpful. I highly suggest to anyone who is wrestling with Calvinism to buy and read this book. For me, Erasmus came out the victor. I particularly enjoyed how he convincingly demonstrated that "free will" was part of the consensual view of the Church (from the first century up to the fifteenth century); and that consensus would include Augustine!

Opposing yet gigantic intellects argue about a fundamental theological issue. An excellent, insightful read.

Most insightful.

Brilliant, concise, relevant. If you are studying the reformation this book will get you into the middle of the history.

I'm very pleased to have come across this collection of treatises back and forth between Desiderius Erasmus and Martin Luther. Erasmus is a Catholic and one of the most influential humanists of his day. Luther is, of course, the "father" of the Reformation. Included in this book are substantial excerpts from Erasmus's "A Discussion or Discourse concerning Free Will" (1524), Luther's reply in "The Enslaved Will" (1525), and Erasmus's counter-replies in "The Shield-Bearer Defending A Discussion" Parts 1 (1526) and 2 (1527). Although these texts do not appear in their entirety, there is more than enough to give you a very thorough sampling of the respective parties' viewpoints on free will and grace. The excerpts fill 346 pages, 95 of which are devoted to Luther and the rest to Erasmus.Essentially, Erasmus lays out the case for free will, noting its long tradition of acceptance among learned commentators of the Catholic Church, but devoting most of his attention to the Scriptural evidence and logical reasons for believing in free will, and to (valid) questions concerning how Luther acquired the confidence to oppose such a long tradition of respected commentators by rejecting free will. Luther's rebuttal in "The Enslaved Will" tries to make a case for "absolute necessity" (that everything man does, good or evil, is wholly determined by God--and that free will is a fiction that has no basis in Scripture); however, this is certainly not Luther at his finest. With no disrespect to Luther's intentions, he is clearly outmatched by Erasmus as a writer. Erasmus brilliantly maintains a tone of humble supplication, as one who is asking Luther to teach him and help him resolve his doubts about whether free will or absolute necessity is correct. But Luther frequently loses his cool and stoops to insults and seemingly hurried rebuttals that often contain fallacies or sloppy reasoning. This is not to say that Luther's beliefs are wrong, per se--only that his case feels very weak against the onslaught of Erasmus's superior writing style and his numerous, valid doubts. This collection is worth reading for several reasons. One, it will get you up to speed on a major debate of the Reformation which shaped the theology and terminology of Protestants for a long time after. Two, it will show you an expert writer (Erasmus) at work, and attentive readers will surely be impressed by, for example, Erasmus's ability to use a simple metaphor to clarify beautifully some difficult concepts that would otherwise feel abstract and dense. Three, it will key you in to some of the significant concerns and vocabulary that permeate early modern English literature. Authors like Spenser, Marlowe, Webster, and Milton work closely with the concepts of free will and grace that are being invoked here. Though those writers are all Protestant, they mostly end up agreeing with Erasmus that man must have at least some sliver of free will in order for his actions to be meaningful and for God to be truly just. Luther's notion of absolute necessity is just too strict to be embraced fully; however, they nonetheless share and echo Luther's broader concern to downplay the efficacy of man's will in order to discourage egotism and to place much greater emphasis on man's almost absolute need for God's helping grace.Well worth a read, though this level of theology is admittedly drier and more intellectually taxing than casual reading. If you're a high level reader and familiar with the style of academic articles or books, you won't be too far outside your comfort zone here. Erasmus is much easier to follow because he assumes a non-expert audience, but Luther is a bit harder because he often employs a more formal, scholastic mode of argumentation.

This book far surpassed what I expected. Martin shows anybody fortunate enough to read this book that honor, courage and compassion exists in all living beings, we simply have yet to figure out how to communicate these traits with one another, human, dog, and as I am beginning to understand, all species. I read this book expecting to be entertained, and entertained I was! Having never traveled far I was thrilled to live in Martin and his pack of dog's world, even if only for the time I enjoyed his words. The Ireland he describes so vividly made me realize that his home, and mine are not all that different. People will bully, and the bullied will survive, grow, learn, love and become whole. This book will stay with me for a long, long time. Thank you, Martin Mckenna for writing it, and living rough, and by doing so learning how to talk to dogs, and ultimately how to reach another human being with your story.

Boy's best friend, pack of dogs to stay with him where he is going or to protect him from harm's way. All people, who are dog lovers - MUST read this book!

What a great book. I learned more about ADHD than Ihad ever known before. Touching, sad, uplifting and beautiful. I am so glad I read this book.

It shows you how animals can be your best friends. All you have,to do is open your mind. Dogs, don't ask for much other then a little food and love. They do communicate if you're willing to listen

This was a very emotional book for me because for almost sixty years we have had a dog in the house. I now have a greater understanding about how to interact with them.

This is one of the very best books I have ever read! It was true to life, and gripping! So relatable! This one is a must read!

Learned a lot about dogs’ behavior & their joy in pleasing us humans. Would’ve liked more “loose ends” tied up. EG:How/what does “Marcine” do after he greets Mom?

A great book!

The late Stan Holtzman was one of America's top truck photographers. This little book contains a beautiful selection of photos (mostly in color) covering the range of American truck makers, from Autocar to White and many more in between. Holtzman combines the eye of an accomplished lensman with the editorial flair of a hands-on trucker/truck lover, and the result is a book truck fans will want to keep thumbing through for years.

If American Iron is your bag, especially 1960's through 1980's then it does not get much better than this. There is a brief history (just the way I like it) and some excellent classic trucks going back to the thirties, but mostly the late 50's onwards dominate this book, especially sixties, seventies, and eighties...Popular classics are well represented, e.g Kenworth A and B models, all the Macks, Peterbilt, Diamond T , Autocar, Marmon, Dodge Bighorn, Western Star, Freightliner Powerliner and even the DF400 International. Excellent paper quality and mostly color photos on 160 pages makes this an absolute treasure.

Bought for my husband, he loves it and reads it all the time! I can't really comment on the content as my husband is the one who reads it.

This was a gift for my husband's friend in France and he loved it...

it good book abount semi truck

Great

The package arrived early in great condition. This is a good book about semi trucks with lots of color pictures of the various semi trucks along with their history and features of the various types of trucks. It does not have any interior pictures of the trucks, only has exterior pictures . Pictures are mostly in color with very few black and white photos. To me the trucks are more appealing in color photos than in black and white photos. The book covers all of the major truck manufacturers Peterbilt, Freightliner, Kenworth, White, Gmc,Ford, International, and Mack Trucks up to the 80's

Pretty good book, small softcover, has nice pics, good reading, Missing Chevy Heavy Duty, But Covers GMC (Astro 95,General,Brigadier). Good book overall.

This book is an absolute gem for the hypnosis practitioner who wants to expand into the powerful and beautiful realm of spiritual hypnosis. For me, Mary's book helped me to structure my sessions into different subjects, such as PLR, Future Lives, The Spiritual Realm, connecting to Guides etc. with awesome ideas for exploring our connections with the people in our lives, finding answers to questions and situations in our lives. What I really love is the information on which questions to ask in order to open up the flow of information from the client. I had previously dipped into PLR - often with mixed results - and I now feel confident that I can offer so much more!Thank you Mary for this powerful and informative guide.

I have been reading Past Life Regression: A Guide for Practitioners, and find the book to be in wonderful alignment with what I have learned from Milton Erickson's methods. From a clinical psychology research perspective, it is so helpful for clients to work in the metaphors, such as are demonstrated in this book, allowing them to best process their emotions in a client-centered, non-leading fashion. This book gives clear and detailed guidance and suggestions on how to do this utilizing past lives. After reading the book I contacted Dr. LaBay, and she was most helpful in supporting my pursuit of incorporating past lives into my professional practice. I am look forward to taking her trainings in the future. Maria CS Gabelberger, Psy.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist

I'm not a past life regression practitioner but I'm trying to access past life memories by working with a hypnotist and doing my own meditation.Even so this book was fascinating for me.It goes far beyond just the mechanics of hypnotizing someone although that is covered for the professionals who regress others for a living. It looks at past life memories and the time between lives from a broad perspective as far as how they relate to each other and to this current life. The author seems to have certain psychic abilities and be able to travel in other dimensions such as the 'astral' plane of existance. There are many strange topics in this book which will be almost revolutionary to people who have strict beliefs. These are too numerous to list in this review but suffice it to say these might fall under the category of 'new age' ideas for some people. This is a great book. It keeps coming out with amazing ideas right on through to the epilogue which offers a wonderful message of hope.Jeff MarzanoMeditation Music of Ancient EgyptLives of the Master: The Rest of the Jesus StorySame Soul, Many Bodies: Discover the Healing Power of Future Lives through Progression TherapyThe Lives of Edgar CayceEdgar Cayce's Egypt: Psychic Revelations on the Most Fascinating Civilization Ever KnownInitiationInitiation in the Great Pyramid (Astara's Library of Mystical Classics)Higher Ground

I am extremely please with this book. finished half the book the moment it arrived. The case studies are a HUGE help in broadening my mind & made me see many things in a different light. I highly recommend this book but be ready to have some crazy stuff thrown at ya. :)

Out of all the books on past life regression that I have read, this one is by far my favorite. The author style of writting is easy to follow, and does an excellent job of letting the information in the pages flow. If PLR is a subject that you are interested in, I Highly recommend you buy this book.

Very good book; very helpful in understanding past life regressions from a therapist's viewpoint

I took the class from Mary LaBay at Bastyr College in Kirkland, and it was fantastic. I have used the skills in this book and that I learned in the class to the benefit of many of my friends.

Atlas of Dinosaur Adventures: Step Into a Prehistoric World, by Emily Hawkins

From School Library Journal

Gr 2–5—Arranged geographically over six regions, this title introduces 31 dinosaurs with a combination of facts, narrative, and visual humor. On each large spread, two paragraphs describe the physical features and behaviors of a different dinosaur. In many cases, these are couched within a present-tense narrative about a particular incident, such as a Baryonyx catching a fish, while others stick to more straightforward dinosaur profiles. Although dates are not provided in a couple of instances, these are engaging and informative introductions. Many of the appealing, useful illustrations are captioned. Other contemporary animals are also portrayed, usually with an identifying caption. The drawings depict traits and size accurately, but there's a whimsical flavor here, too. Observant readers will notice hats, bibs, or scarves on some dinosaurs, along with other intentional anachronisms such as fishing poles or a beach ball. These are subtle enough to make spotting them a fun activity but clearly out of place enough that they won't be mistaken as historically accurate. Each spread also includes an inset fact box and range map. A full map introduces each region and points out dinosaur locations. A detailed index provides access, even to the species with brief entries. VERDICT A strong option to bolster dinosaur collections.—Steven Engelfried, Wilsonville Public Library, OR

This absorbing compendium puts prehistoric animals on the map. It's our map, not theirs: The continents appear as they are today rather than in the landmass configurations that prevailed in the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, making it easier to grasp the dinosaurs' extraordinary geographic span. Informative bursts of text and witty fillips here and there (e.g., a tiny Microraptor wears a goofy propeller hat) add fun to this engrossing volume for enthusiasts ages 4-10. - Wall Street Journal"A world tour of reconstructed prehistoric landscapes based on modern fossil discoveries.Going continent by (modern) continent in a series of big, populous maps and full-spread scenes, Hawkins and Letherland feature 31 dinosaurs or prehistoric reptiles but add dozens of others—all identified, supplied with quick descriptive notes, and depicted in a simplified but reasonably realistic style. This adds up to a weighty bundle of names and facts, but the authors compensate by not taking their enterprise too seriously. Readers won't soon forget, for instance, that the "massive droppings" of T. Rex "were as long as a human arm," and sharp-eyed viewers will notice a Ceratosaurus carrying a butterfly net to bag prey, both a toothy T. Rex and a Giganotosaurus with napkins tied around their necks, and smaller hunters sporting the odd pith helmet or kerchief...A catastrophic meteorite (with proper references to the contemporaneous volcanism) brings both the era and the tour to a close. A big, breezy banquet of dino facts—and factoids." – Kirkus ReviewsA strong option to bolster dinosaur collections. - School Library Journal"Where do I even begin on how brilliant this book is? I adore the Atlas of series and this Dinosaur version is superb... rich illustrations...truly engaging" - Let Them Be Small "An oversized feat of richly illustrated information" - Achuka "We love everything about this book, from the quirky details worked into various illustrations to the effective use of big format double page spreads to really immerse little ones" - Read It Daddy "A perfect gift for dinosaur-mad kids, or as a brilliant introduction for a new fan of all things scaly and scary, a clear and interesting read that could be dipped into or read from start to finish."  - BookTrust "This book provides snapshot information about plate tectonics and various periods of the age of dinosaurs, highlighting specific dinosaurs via two-page spreads that detail archeological skeletons found in places throughout the world. The illustrations are rendered in pen and ink and show scenery of possible dinosaur habitats, although from time to time, a cartoonish illustration is thrown in for comic effect. Young students will enjoy browsing this oversize book. There are paragraphs of informational text included in each two-page spread, including a text box that gives the reader specific information about the dinosaur, where the first fossils were found, and an inset map that clarifies where in the world the findings occurred. The text is small and dense and at times gets lost in the illustrations, but there is plenty of information to be found for older readers." - Kay Evey, Teacher-Librarian, Retired from Tukwila Elementary School, Tukwila, Washington for School Library Connection "Arranged geographically over six regions, this title introduces 31 dinosaurs with a combination of facts, narrative, and visual humor...VERDICT A strong option to bolster dinosaur collections." – Steven Engelfried, Wilsonville Public Library, OR for School Library Journal"The colorful creatures that stalk through the oversize pages of 'Atlas of Dinosaur Adventures' have a simpler, more stylized look, but they too evoke a stunning variety of life forms. Written by Emily Hawkins and illustrated by Lucy Letherland, this absorbing compendium puts prehistoric animals on the map. It's our map, not theirs: The continents appear as they are today rather than in the landmass configurations that prevailed in the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, making it easier to grasp the dinosaurs' extraordinary geographic span. Informative bursts of text and witty fillips here and there (e.g., a tiny Microraptor wears a goofy propeller hat) add fun to this engrossing volume for enthusiasts ages 4-10." - Wall Street Journal"Around the world and through the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous eras, dozens of dinosaurs, reptiles, and prehistoric creatures forage, nest, migrate, and battle, in Atlas of Dinosaur Adventures. A multifaceted catalogue of facts and wildlife commentary highlighted by Lucy Letherland’s colorfully detailed artwork, the book features the exciting daily challenges faced by herds of Zuniceratops or scavenging Giganotosaurus along with evolving landscapes and geography, from fossil sites in India and Zimbabwe to Dinosaur Ridge, Colorado." - ForeWord Reviews

We have many dinosaur books aimed at children. At least a dozen. This one is our favorite when it comes to bedtime reading. The layout is terrific, and the illustrations are great. But what really sets this book apart are the stories. Although entirely fictional, obviously, they are grounded in science and bring the animals to life in my son’s mind far more effectively than the typical recitation of facts. Not that the facts are missing here! But my son adores the presentation and always asks for this book at night. Personally, I enjoy the geographically organized material. If your kid loves dinos, you cannot go wrong with this “Atlas”!

My five year old loves this book! I’d say this one is not quite as great as another similar book, but still much better than a lot of dinosaur books. The photos are very pretty which I enjoy and there is a lot of information. The layout makes some of it hard to read in dim light (we read it before bed) and it’s also a little bit less affective for reading comprehension. Overall it’s still a great book for a young dinosaur lover.

My 6-year-old grandson is mesmerized by these 2 books. The other one is the Atlas of Animal Adventures. He looks back and forth from the pages to the map to understand where in the world each animal lives (or dinosaur has been found). This is truly a very educational book. I highly recommend it.

My girls LOVE this book. Not content related but: It's HUGE so it doesn't fit so well on our bookcase without putting it on it's side.A great addition to a dinosaur lovers library. Fun illustrations and information.

We love Atlas of dinosaurs! It’s tall and has lovely illustrations. Lots of dinosaurs by area, and some funny additions to some random drawings that keep my kids interested and laughing (a random Dino wearing a hat, one eating a hot dog, etc)

Beautiful book with lots of color, educational information and easy to read for kids. Very satisfied with this dino book!

My 5-year old grandson loved this and his 8 year old brother wanted to take it for his own.

My grandson loved it.

I bought this book for some background on my first visit to New Orleans expecting to get some perspective on the city. I got that and then some. The writing is clear and passionate. The information is incredibly well researched with many references and excerpts. Some of the info was eye opening and surprising (Lincoln wanted to deport all the freed slaves?!). This book illuminates not only the history of a fascinating, beautiful, and unique city, but it also offers a solid footing for understanding a large portion of American history. I want to pass this book on to friends, but I am not ready to give it up yet.

Lots of good information about the cultural history of New Orleans, with interesting observations about the effects of different imperial powers (French, Spanish, U.S.) on the region, the complexity of race relations against the background of the slave trade, and the strong Caribbean influence from Cuba and Haiti. It's pretty well written and entertaining, but I had two problems with it: first, the author goes out on lots of limbs to speculate about possible cultural origins of New Orleans music--a lot of "it's possible that" and "it's not unreasonable to assume", when an actual musicologist would be reluctant to make such connections. Second, the book lacks some cohesion, often relaying piles of information without tying it all together, particularly at the end when it comes to a crashing stop and shifts gears to suddenly talk about Mardi Gras Indians in the aftermath of Katrina.

Minutely researched and documented, fascinating in bringing historical context to bear, well-written, and enlightening on so many topics. A must-read for those who have any love for New Orleans and her traditions in their hearts. I found myself highlighting passage after passage to revisit later. If you want to understand the "how" and the "why" and the "what" and the "who" of New Orleans, I can think of nothing more effective than reading this book. The timeline covered ranges from pre-Columbian to post-Katrina and encompasses the entire Western world as needed to tell the story of this special, spiritual place.

I have read dozens of books on New Orleans history and this is one of the best. Sublette's deep research into the "World that made..." really illuminates how NO became what it is today, the mix of cultures, music, food, architectures etc., Full of fascinating facts and stories, threaded with a informed analysis. His erudition and fine writing make this a pleasure to read Read it and pass on to others who are curious about the by the history of one of America's greatest cities and cultural treasures..

Let me say that I'm usually a strictly fiction reader, so maybe that has something to do with my feelings about this book. Mr. Sublette has obviously done his research here, and it is nicely written so that even I am staying with it and sort of enjoying it. The thing here is, to me, it is almost OVER researched. It's as if Mr. Sublette is so very excited about his subject that he just can not pack enough details and quotes into his book. It's almost like a very, very well researched and foot noted college paper by an extremely enthusiastic student. It's readable, for sure. It is absolutely educational (and then some!) but personally, I feel as if it could have benefited from some editing, some self restraint and maybe a more specific time line. We are kind of bouncing from the 1500's to the 1700's to Katrina, and I'm only on page 87 ! This book may have been more educational than I'd bargained for, but I'm enjoying it and learning a lot. I hope that I can hang in there and finish it!

It provided a lot of needed background information on early New Orleans that I needed. Good in combination with other histories of N.O.

For anyone interested in the musical influence behind american music way back from Africa, France or Spain, through Cuba and New Orleans... Beautifully written, wonderfully researched, with a real feeling for people and places and for music. I have only one complaint: Amazon has got to develop a way to allow us to listen to bits of the music the author is talking about. A fabulous book.

A beautiful and wise book about the history of New Orleans, with fascinating insights into its many connections with the Caribbean and the old world and the rest of the United States, with particular insight into the musical history of our most musical city.

Just like any child, Grace loves to hear stories. For Grace these stories came from her grandma. Once she had heard them she would start reenacting them giving herself the most important parts. (Children will recognize most of the stories and get a kick out of Grace's costumes.)One day the school teacher told the class that they were going to do the play Peter Pan. Who wanted to be Peter? Why Grace of course! Kids being kids told Grace that she couldn't play the part of Peter because not only was she a girl but she was black! Thankfully her mother and grandmother knew that Grace could be anything she wanted to and thus encouraged her. Read the entire book to see how it ends.A truly delightful and inspiring, well written and illustrated book. This book was on our son's second grade "Suggested Reading List" so I purchased this USED from Amazon. I was not required to do a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Great book! I gave this book to my granddaughter who is 4 1/2 years old. Her mother was looking for a nice story and introducing her daughter to more ethnic diversity. Her mother was thrilled!

Grace was a girl who dreamed big dreams. She loved stories and acted out the parts from stories she knew - Joan of Arc, a soldier hidden in a wooden horse at the gates of Troy, a pirate, an explorer, a doctor. When her class at school was going to perform "Peter Pan," Grace knew she wanted to play Peter! Lots of other children wanted to play Peter too, so the teacher held auditions to see who would earn the part. Two of her classmates said she could not play that role, because Peter Pan was not a girl, nor was he black. But her mother and her grandmother encouraged her to keep on dreaming. "You can be anyone you want," Grandma said, "if you put your mind to it." Grace worked hard learning her lines. When the audition was over, she was named Peter Pan, because she did the best acting of all the class. What child, what adult really, has not been told, "You can't do that!" and given a long list of reasons why she can't. We all can do much more than even we can dream, so don't let anyone tell you, "You can't."

Fantastic book. Though, I hadn't been aware that dealing with skin color or gender and overcoming stereotypes was the focus of this book and it was a surprise for my 5 year old to read that kids were telling Grace that she couldn't play the part she wanted in the play because she was Black or because she was a girl. She kept asking me "what does it mean that she can't do something because of her brown skin?" I just told her those kids were being ridiculous telling Grace she could not do something good that she wanted to do and that, thankfully, the kids at her school are smarter than the kids in the book. And I'm glad for that!

This is one of my favorite stories to read my daughter! Love the "believe in yourself" and "equality" messages for young girls and BEAUTIFUL illustrations. However buy NEW, I bought used and the condition was poor despite being advertised as excellent.

Great book to teach you child to love there skin there gender and to love themselves.

This is an amazing book for any child to read. I think sometimes only certain people buy books with black characters or girl characters, but this is about the possibilities in all of us and saying NO to people's preconceptions of who you are. Any child or adult will enjoy this wonderful story. It should be in every school and personal library. The characters are accessible and the illustrations are wonderful.

Great for any classroom.
