I own the two previous books in this series by Teresa Goodridge (Winter and Summer) and have found the Spring book to be an improvement over both. While the colored samples are still pictures of the original watercolor artwork rather than colored samples of the actual designs in the book, the problems with the tiny details (especially on faces) is much improved in this book. Details are more finished (less open ended, sketchy type details.) Coloring in it is easier as well as being able to use more types of coloring medium with larger nibs.The designs are quite lovely with lots of spring themes. There are flowers, birds, outdoor scenes with fun activities like kite flying, walking in the part, riding bicycles, and shopping in an open-air market. The designs are quite detailed and do contain intricate and small areas to color. It is not a book that I would recommend to anyone with fine motor or vision issues.I noticed that the feel of the paper is slightly rougher than other Creative Haven books I have ordered in this last six months or so. I like the new texture as it is even better for use with colored pencils.This is what I experienced while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium.31 Spring inspired DesignsThe designs are printed one side of the pagePaper is the usual Creative Haven quality: white, medium weight, slightly rough and has perforated pages.Glue Binding but with perforated pages so removing a page is fairly simple.The designs stop well before the perforations and each of the designs has a framing line at the outer edge.Alcohol-based markers bleed through this paperWater-based markers bleed through in spots and show colorful shadows on the back of the pageGel pens and India ink pens leave shadows of color on the back of the page. India ink pens can bleed through when I apply more than one layer of ink.Coloring pencils work well with this paper and even better than many of the more recent Creative Haven coloring books I have bought. I was able to get good pigment (color) lay down, layer the same color and multiple colors and to blend easily using a pencil style blender. I tested both oil and wax-based pencils with similar results. Hard lead pencils, like Verithins, leave dents on the back of the page.I suggest either removing pages from the book to color or using a blotter page under your working page. I like card stock as it keeps ink from seeping through and damaging the pages below.

I just received my book today. I love it and can't wait to color the pages. There are 31 pages to color in the book. Out of the 31 pages there are 25 pages that I love. I have a lot of books and normally don't usually have that many pages in the whole book that I want to color. The pictures are on sheet alone. the sheets are easy to tear out. The sheets are thick enough that I will be able to use my sharpies.

This is a delightful taste of Spring. Some pictures are a bit detailed but most are just what you need to help pull you out of the doldrums. I'm aching for Spring to come and this is helping my mood. Pictures are beautiful and a nice variety of Spring scenes.

Great quality coloring book. Beautiful pictures that make you want to go back and keep coloring in this book. It truly captures the feeling of Springtime. Love the attention to detail.

Very pretty pictures, but several pages have such thick black lines,that you cannot color that area. Several of the tree leaves are filled in black. One page has an area that is smeared and blurry. It's almost like the pictures are shrunk down from an original larger drawing, causing the lines to be too close.

Love the scenes in this book and enjoying coloring it but would love to see less dark shading. Some of the tree limbs are too black

I love this book, it is exactly what I wanted! Each page has enough detail to make it interesting and tells a story when completed. The paper handles markers without too much bleeding into other areas. Markers will bleed through to the back of the paper, so place a blank page behind as you color. I am definitely hooked on Teresa Goodridge’s artwork.

I purchased this book as a gift for my mother who enjoys coloring as a stress release activity. She likes to color pages with a lot of detail and contrast but that still have a basic scene. She was very happy with it so it made a great gift.

I love this book. I read it years ago and found it to be a fun way to learn more about wine. Some of the humorous ways he compares wines puts things into context better than more academically written books. I bought this copy for my sister as she's learning more about wine for work and she seems to enjoy it despite not being as big of a wine enthusiast as myself.

Fun read

A great writer!

I must confess that I picked this book up only because I recognized the author’s name and knew that I was long overdue to read something of Jay McInerney’s. He’s a local boy – and one who enjoys a possibly worldwide reputation thanks to the likes of BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY. I read a few pages and decided I’d give it a go. Jay’s style, while not singular, is quite amusing. He writes like a very gifted kid, though also like one who’s not overwhelmed with his own genius (no names, please). Since I pay my rent and my kids’ tuition with the money I make from the business Jay writes about in these pages, I suppose I know a little about the business. I also spent a decade of my “professional student” career in Europe – specifically, in Switzerland; Austria; Italy: (then) West Germany; the (then) Soviet Union; and Spain – and was able to sample a variety of Old World wines. Just short of a year ago, I read a little thing titled WINE (ALL-IN-ONE) FOR DUMMIES – yes, all 600+ pages of it. And, given my employment, I probably now read a little something about wine every day. All of that said, I can easily recommend this book, whether to the neophyte or to the experienced connoisseur, as a worthwhile read. The former will find it educational; the latter will find it, at the very least, entertaining. McInerney touches upon the history, geography and topology of the wine-making and –drinking business just enough to render the book educational – and does so in a kind of wine-spritzer style to render the subject entertaining. If you have to start anywhere in this continually evolving world of wine, this is as good a place as I can imagine to get your feet wet and your palate titillated. If I have any criticism at all (and this frankly doesn’t count as a valid criticism, given the subject-matter and its requirements), it’s that the book seems just a tad dated. But in some sense at least, books about wine – just like books about gardening or cooking – never age out. And although this book may well be a mere collection of essays written over months or years for the likes of House & Garden, Jay McInerney’s prose doesn’t age out either. Reading over fellow Amazon book critics, the observation came up that Jay McInerney is far too involved in this book for his own good. I suggest readers take it for what it is. This guy, like Brett Easton Ellis has made his cool cash depicting the decadent world of America in the 1980s and early 90s.So what does a man do with his cool cash and his passion for wine? He spends it, he hob-nobs with the rich and famous. This book has its fun and comical points ("Anyone who starts analyzing the taste of a rose in public should be thrown in the pool immediately" or "...the more expensive California Chardonnay tended to resemble the women of Playboy and Beverly Hills") and he enjoys meeting wine makers, describing Angelo Gaja's driving as "Jackie Steward on crystal Meth" - which made me laugh.The book is at best an irreverent, almost comedian-like take on wine. It is serious only for a moment. He has a few pointers but again, unless you have thousands in your bank account, you most likely won't follow his advice. He isn't a sommelier or someone in the industry. He's honest, he explains where he's coming form. He's a writer that has a passion for wine. And like most American wine writers, he misuses the word 'varietal' instead of using 'variety' ('varietal' is an adjective, describing a type of wine, not the grape variety itself - how come the British always get it right?). When it comes to tasting notes, he is more pop culture which after a hundred pages, began to tire.But look at the title 'Bacchus and Me'. That says it all. You can hate this book, find it pompous and elitist (which it can be) or you can take it for what it is - Jay McInerney and wine. How else would he write? What else would he write about? Himself, his money, his wine. There is no real depth here. It's a beach read at best but if you can pick up a pointer and giggle along the way, it's not that bad.

Maria Toorpakai is a professional squash player, currently ranked as Pakistan's top female player and 48th in the world. As a child growing up in a highly conservative tribal area of Pakistan where girls' involvement in sport was forbidden by the local Islamic culture, Toorpakai trained and competed as a boy in Peshawar. Toorpakai currently resides and trains in Toronto, Canada, under former professional squash player Jonathon Power. This books is so well written that it brought devastation so close to my heart. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and I was disappointed, gleefully. To see this defiant warrior find her ground and believe and trust herself, her God and her parents is the definition of love. I could find nothing that I didn't believe or was without raw with emotion. Her egotism didn't even stop me from loving this book. I have 2 complaints:-there is no mention of her brothers in the acknowledgement. Sadly this has left me disappointed and the word infidel-i felt slapped in the face. I was rooting for her and this family and I still am. Nothing is without its flaws. Thank you Maria-Genghis Khan for sharing your world and journey. You have opened my eyes.

This is story about one fearless young woman and her very brave family. It really shows the difference between Taliban. beliefs and true islam, something we all need to remember and understand. Maria and her family were relentless in pursuing their dreams and ideals despite the odds being against them and I admired the bonds the entire family had and how much they supported each other. Excellent read.

I really found this story interesting. It really helps to expand my knowledge of the larger world and what people have to overcome. It is a story that needs telling. It is not literature but it is well written and doesn't jump around. Another similar book that tells a story of a female growing up in Afghanistan is a Thousand Splendid Suns. Since most of history was written by men I'm finding it refreshing today to read quality books written by woman about strong women.

As I read I felt like I was right with these women and girls as they fought with the social obstacles that surround them. I came to admire and respect Maria's parents in the way they helped Maria be what she wanted to be. They put their lives and the lives of their children in the crosshairs of death by allowing their children the freedom to find their way. It is an inspiration to learn of what people must live through in order to make a difference in the world by helping others.Bobby Jean

I may not have read this book if it hadn't been picked by my book club, I would have missed out on an eye-opening experience. Seeing the world through Maria's life I have learned so much about a culture and region that I knew so little. It is hard to believe what she has faced in life simply because of her love of sports and being outdoors. It puts things in perspective.

An insight into the difference between the freedom of girls and boys under the Taliban. The parents definitely want an education for all their children but realize that school is not the best place for this daughter to be. It would be interesting to find out why her mother was allowed to teach and set up schools given the strictures placed on women.

Maria book is well written and so very insightful and candid. I am able to identify with her family, especially her father. For Father's Day I gave 3 additional copies to my 3 oldest grand daughters ages 14 through 17. They were confussed to receive a Father's Day gift from me. I said, "In addition to your summer readings, you will read about Maria. When everyone is finished the 4 of us will have a special dinner to review her story. Ladies, that is your Father's Day gift to me." Love, Paw Paw

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and the writing. The story of Maria and especially her father were so heartfelt. I can't imagine the risks her mother and father took to educate the young girls of their tribal areas of Pakistan. The support she received not only from her father and mother but also her brother and sister which continues to this day. I highly recommend this book for book group discussions as well. Can't wait to discuss at our book group this week. Thank you Maria Toorpakai for a beautiful story.

Roy Rowan led an active and intriguing life. I should say he “is leading” such a life—not past tense. His days as a war correspondent traveling all over the world may be over (or not), but his active lifestyle and writing are not finished. He intends to keep on doing it all till the end. I was hoping for more psychological, maybe spiritual nuggets of wisdom from the book, but Rowan does a lot of showing vs. telling. The book is a cross between memoir and motivational and that's just fine. We can learn much from his simple act of purchasing a new car at ninety. He lives the life he recommends for us all and proves the old Yogi Berra quote, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” Inspiring.

Roy Rowan says in his introduction that this book is NOT a manual on aging. He writes "This Fiesty man's guide to growing old, written in the form of a rambling memoir, is about aging, vigorously, actively, and any way but gracefully." And this is exactly what it is - a delightful volume, filled with the wisdom of a man who has led, and continues to lead at 90+, a life full of adventure, writing, and learning. If I am only slightly successful at following Mr. Rowan's example, I will have lived a full and fulfilling life. Thanks you for sharing your wisdom, Roy Rowan.

I gave this to my husband last month. He's an 80 yr old who plans to live past 100. He feels he can really relate to much of what is in the book. And I catch him laughing at a good bit of it.

When I picked up Never Too Late: A 90-Year-Old's Pursuit of a Whirlwind Life by Roy Rowan at the library, I was intrigued. Here we have a 90-year-old guy who has been all over the world as a reporter, covering many critical moments in world history and interviewing the leaders who were part of them. It sounded as if he had learned how to live life to the fullest regardless of age, and was going to share those insights with the reader. And he does that... for about half the book. It then morphs into more of a memoir of his adventures in the field. Interesting, to be sure... but was it really what the book set out to be? I don't think so...Contents:Who Says You Have to Grow Old Gracefully!; How Old is Old?; Quit Is a Four-Letter Word; R Is for Resilience; Sunny Side Up; Tuned to the Immune System; You and the Eureka Factor; Stay in Touch; Seeking Solitude; Looking Back; Looking Ahead; Recycling the Past; Reliving the Dream; Finally, a Feeling of Closure; Cruising into the Nineties; Acknowledgments; About the AuthorRowan has, without question, led a fascinating life. While covering wars and world leaders for Time, Life, and Fortune magazines, he was able to experience more than most of us would see and do in five lifetimes. And as he headed into his 60's, 70's, and beyond, he certainly didn't retire to the porch swing to watch life flow by. He still travels, exercises, and writes on a regular basis, even though he's into his 90's now. Add in the fact that he beat cancer once and lives with a form of bone cancer that's controlled through medication, and he definitely doesn't fit the normal image of "old age." I'd be happy to do what he does right now, and I'm only 50!Through the chapter titled "You and the Eureka Factor," he shares his thoughts and insights on how you can still live a full and active life long past the time most people decide to slow down (or die). Given that's the angle of the book I was expecting based on the flyleaf, I thought it was good material. But from "Stay in Touch" through the end of the book, the whole tone and flavor of the book changes. There was far less advice and much more reminiscing about past and current adventures. Yes, the stories were interesting, but it was almost as if he wrote two different books of around 100 pages each, and then decided to put them into a single volume because they were otherwise too short to publish as stand-alone books. Either that, or he and the publisher couldn't quite figure out what the book should be... a personal improvement book or a look back at his life in publishing. By trying to do both, I think they failed to do either as well as they could have.Given I know more about Rowen's life now, I'd be somewhat interested in picking up some of his other books. I have no doubt his first-hand accounts and analysis of the war in China or the Vietnam conflict would be well worth reading. ...not as good as I expected it to be, based on the many glowing editorial reviews about this book and its author,Roy Rowan.As a couple of other reviewers have mentioned here, it toggled between a self-help book and memoir and that was a bit distracting.I also would have preferred a more optimistic tone overall. I didn't enjoy reading all the (sometimes gory) details about his two experiences with cancer and the MANY pages of war stories.I think this book would appeal to people who have lived some of the same experiences as this author, living abroad extensively and/or as an international reporter. For me, it just wasn't all that interesting.I gave up before I finished and will be passing this one along to our local free box at the library.

Roy Rowan is a journalist who is now in his 90's and has accomplished a lot over his long life. He has written several books and has been in the thick of things as a journalist, covering live battles in Vietnam and interviewing a lot of dignitaries at key times in world history, including American presidents and other heads of state. He notes one book which I read many years ago, The Intuitive Manager, which I remember liking way back then.He is an excellent writer. He is not cerebral in any sense but he is very descriptive and really makes the reader feel that they are there. He wrote a book based on his journals when he was in China before the Communists took over, and lucky for us his writing was vivid and memorable. Along the journey of his lifetime he shares with the reader lessons learned, particularly on how to approach old age with vigor and enthusiasm. He is in this case a very good example of someone who has aged well, in the sense of continuing to take on challenges, growing and learning at an advanced age (despite two battles with cancer).The book is a personal memoir but also a history journal of sorts, as Rowan recounts his work in Vietnam, China, and other parts of the world. There is also a glimpse into the publishing world, as Rowan also details some of his experiences working for Life and Forbes under Henry Luce, a character worth reading about in this work as well.

About the Author

Michael Stern is a fine artist who creates large-scale illuminated photo-based artworks and installations. He curated the landmark exhibition "Julius Shulman: Palm Springs," which forms the basis of this book. He is the editor, designer, and curator of the Palm Springs Modern Committee’s website. Alan Hess is an architect and architecture critic for the San Jose Mercury News, and author of numerous articles and books, including, for Rizzoli, Frank Lloyd Wright: The Houses, Frank Lloyd Wright: Prairie Style, Oscar Niemeyer Houses, and the forthcoming Frank Lloyd Wright: Mid-Century Modern.

For any modern architecture enthusiast, or Palm Spring lover, or a fan of great photography, or all, this is the book to purchase. What a magnificent collection of photos, both in color and Black and White. The most wonderful Palm Springs houses and their lavish landscapes are all covered in this tome, leaving you with a hankering desire to buy your own mid-century mod home in the Desert and move there for good. Do yourself a big favor and Just Buy It !!!!!Also, if after reading this one, you want to see more of Julius Shulman's gorgeous work, get yourself his "Modernism Revisited" masterpiece, which you will love as much as his Palm Springs book reviewed here.

I want to live in Palm Springs so badly. This is the next best thing. Tons of great old houses and photos. Well made. I love this book.

This is just a gorgeous book. We saw the exhibit at the Palm Springs Art Museum on which it is based, and the book lives up to the exhibit. It's a beautifully photographed (of course -- Shulman does amazing things with light and contrast) retrospective of Desert Mid-Century Modern, and Alan Hess provides his usual informative commentary. A must-have for Desert Modern enthusiasts!

One of the best books I've ever seen if you are interested in great photos of Palm Springs California Modern.Micheal Stern knows how to show it off !

If you love and appreciate Mid-century Modern Architecture, you will want to purchase this book. Julius Shulman was a genius photographer and his biography is a great read. Enjoy!
