I bought this book for some background on my first visit to New Orleans expecting to get some perspective on the city. I got that and then some. The writing is clear and passionate. The information is incredibly well researched with many references and excerpts. Some of the info was eye opening and surprising (Lincoln wanted to deport all the freed slaves?!). This book illuminates not only the history of a fascinating, beautiful, and unique city, but it also offers a solid footing for understanding a large portion of American history. I want to pass this book on to friends, but I am not ready to give it up yet.

Lots of good information about the cultural history of New Orleans, with interesting observations about the effects of different imperial powers (French, Spanish, U.S.) on the region, the complexity of race relations against the background of the slave trade, and the strong Caribbean influence from Cuba and Haiti. It's pretty well written and entertaining, but I had two problems with it: first, the author goes out on lots of limbs to speculate about possible cultural origins of New Orleans music--a lot of "it's possible that" and "it's not unreasonable to assume", when an actual musicologist would be reluctant to make such connections. Second, the book lacks some cohesion, often relaying piles of information without tying it all together, particularly at the end when it comes to a crashing stop and shifts gears to suddenly talk about Mardi Gras Indians in the aftermath of Katrina.

Minutely researched and documented, fascinating in bringing historical context to bear, well-written, and enlightening on so many topics. A must-read for those who have any love for New Orleans and her traditions in their hearts. I found myself highlighting passage after passage to revisit later. If you want to understand the "how" and the "why" and the "what" and the "who" of New Orleans, I can think of nothing more effective than reading this book. The timeline covered ranges from pre-Columbian to post-Katrina and encompasses the entire Western world as needed to tell the story of this special, spiritual place.

I have read dozens of books on New Orleans history and this is one of the best. Sublette's deep research into the "World that made..." really illuminates how NO became what it is today, the mix of cultures, music, food, architectures etc., Full of fascinating facts and stories, threaded with a informed analysis. His erudition and fine writing make this a pleasure to read Read it and pass on to others who are curious about the by the history of one of America's greatest cities and cultural treasures..

Let me say that I'm usually a strictly fiction reader, so maybe that has something to do with my feelings about this book. Mr. Sublette has obviously done his research here, and it is nicely written so that even I am staying with it and sort of enjoying it. The thing here is, to me, it is almost OVER researched. It's as if Mr. Sublette is so very excited about his subject that he just can not pack enough details and quotes into his book. It's almost like a very, very well researched and foot noted college paper by an extremely enthusiastic student. It's readable, for sure. It is absolutely educational (and then some!) but personally, I feel as if it could have benefited from some editing, some self restraint and maybe a more specific time line. We are kind of bouncing from the 1500's to the 1700's to Katrina, and I'm only on page 87 ! This book may have been more educational than I'd bargained for, but I'm enjoying it and learning a lot. I hope that I can hang in there and finish it!

It provided a lot of needed background information on early New Orleans that I needed. Good in combination with other histories of N.O.

For anyone interested in the musical influence behind american music way back from Africa, France or Spain, through Cuba and New Orleans... Beautifully written, wonderfully researched, with a real feeling for people and places and for music. I have only one complaint: Amazon has got to develop a way to allow us to listen to bits of the music the author is talking about. A fabulous book.

A beautiful and wise book about the history of New Orleans, with fascinating insights into its many connections with the Caribbean and the old world and the rest of the United States, with particular insight into the musical history of our most musical city.

Just like any child, Grace loves to hear stories. For Grace these stories came from her grandma. Once she had heard them she would start reenacting them giving herself the most important parts. (Children will recognize most of the stories and get a kick out of Grace's costumes.)One day the school teacher told the class that they were going to do the play Peter Pan. Who wanted to be Peter? Why Grace of course! Kids being kids told Grace that she couldn't play the part of Peter because not only was she a girl but she was black! Thankfully her mother and grandmother knew that Grace could be anything she wanted to and thus encouraged her. Read the entire book to see how it ends.A truly delightful and inspiring, well written and illustrated book. This book was on our son's second grade "Suggested Reading List" so I purchased this USED from Amazon. I was not required to do a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Great book! I gave this book to my granddaughter who is 4 1/2 years old. Her mother was looking for a nice story and introducing her daughter to more ethnic diversity. Her mother was thrilled!

Grace was a girl who dreamed big dreams. She loved stories and acted out the parts from stories she knew - Joan of Arc, a soldier hidden in a wooden horse at the gates of Troy, a pirate, an explorer, a doctor. When her class at school was going to perform "Peter Pan," Grace knew she wanted to play Peter! Lots of other children wanted to play Peter too, so the teacher held auditions to see who would earn the part. Two of her classmates said she could not play that role, because Peter Pan was not a girl, nor was he black. But her mother and her grandmother encouraged her to keep on dreaming. "You can be anyone you want," Grandma said, "if you put your mind to it." Grace worked hard learning her lines. When the audition was over, she was named Peter Pan, because she did the best acting of all the class. What child, what adult really, has not been told, "You can't do that!" and given a long list of reasons why she can't. We all can do much more than even we can dream, so don't let anyone tell you, "You can't."

Fantastic book. Though, I hadn't been aware that dealing with skin color or gender and overcoming stereotypes was the focus of this book and it was a surprise for my 5 year old to read that kids were telling Grace that she couldn't play the part she wanted in the play because she was Black or because she was a girl. She kept asking me "what does it mean that she can't do something because of her brown skin?" I just told her those kids were being ridiculous telling Grace she could not do something good that she wanted to do and that, thankfully, the kids at her school are smarter than the kids in the book. And I'm glad for that!

This is one of my favorite stories to read my daughter! Love the "believe in yourself" and "equality" messages for young girls and BEAUTIFUL illustrations. However buy NEW, I bought used and the condition was poor despite being advertised as excellent.

Great book to teach you child to love there skin there gender and to love themselves.

This is an amazing book for any child to read. I think sometimes only certain people buy books with black characters or girl characters, but this is about the possibilities in all of us and saying NO to people's preconceptions of who you are. Any child or adult will enjoy this wonderful story. It should be in every school and personal library. The characters are accessible and the illustrations are wonderful.

Great for any classroom.
